Implementation Of A Dose Response To Wood Smoke Pm: A Potential Method To Further Explain Cvd In Wildland Firefighters., Dylan Richmond, John Quindry, Christopher T. Migliaccio, Brent Ruby

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The presentation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and comorbidities in aging and retired wildland firefighters (WLFF) continues to be one of the top health priorities to address by The United States Forest Service. In the past 20 years, experts at multiple meetings and conferences have confronted this growing concern as a formal call to action to investigation the individual components related to working in the wildland fire setting. The inhalation of wood smoke particulate matter (PM) shows evidence of altering homeostasis in WLLF’s in the areas of oxidative stress, inflammation, and arterial stiffness, all of which contribute to the development of …

Epigenetic Alterations In Response To Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Dha Diet Modification, Elizabeth Michelle Cole Jan 2020

Epigenetic Alterations In Response To Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Dha Diet Modification, Elizabeth Michelle Cole

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are a class of engineered nanomaterials that pose airborne exposure risks to human health. Immense variations in physical properties such as size and shape complicate understanding the underlying mechanisms and consequences of MWCNT exposures. There are concerns that exposures can lead to chronic pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis diseases, as is the case with other more known ultra-fine respirable materials with similar physical properties, such as crystalline silica and asbestos. Pro-inflammatory diseases can be regulated by epigenetic changes, which can be influenced by environment, including diet. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that may promote …

Rocky Mountain High: An Investigation Of Downhill Snow Sports And Marijuana Use, Silas Phillips Jan 2018

Rocky Mountain High: An Investigation Of Downhill Snow Sports And Marijuana Use, Silas Phillips

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

What comes to mind when you imagine a ‘stoner?’ Most stereotype the term– some couch-bound, chip-munching slouch with a foggy gaze (and perhaps a goofy grin). Marijuana and its chemical effects hold an increasing presence in American minds. With full legalization of recreational use in 8 states and various degrees of medical legality in 18 others, the substance is caught up in a cultural shift. Our society is tackling the ethicality of marijuana, and the stigmas built around the drug are changing. What was once cited for ‘reefer madness’ is becoming (to some) a medical treatment, or just another way …

Triple-Helicate Self-Assembly, Dynamics, And Anion Binding Of Halogen-Bonding M-Arylene-Ethynylene Oligomers, Casey John Massena Jan 2018

Triple-Helicate Self-Assembly, Dynamics, And Anion Binding Of Halogen-Bonding M-Arylene-Ethynylene Oligomers, Casey John Massena

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The form and function of biopolymers depend on the precise folding and organization of vast arrays of chemical groups. Hence, the simple yet elegant helix is one of the most pervasive structural elements in nature. Moreover, given the ubiquity and importance of anions, anion-interfacing helical structures hold promise as useful, stimuli-responsive supramolecules. Like metals, anions can powerfully coordinate organic ligands and promote helical self-assembly. However, anion coordination is far less understood than that of metals. Halide ions are an especially challenging target due to their small size, low charge, and variable coordination number/geometry. This work presents a new strategy that …

Self Reported Knowledge Of Concussion Symptoms And Management By Middle And High School Club Lacrosse Coaches, Logan Ellis Jan 2017

Self Reported Knowledge Of Concussion Symptoms And Management By Middle And High School Club Lacrosse Coaches, Logan Ellis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

TITLE: Self-reported knowledge of concussion symptoms and management by middle and high school club lacrosse coaches

AUTHORS: Logan Ellis

BACKGROUND: With an increase in sport participation across all levels, concussion prevalence has increased as well as reliance on coaches to recognize a concussed player. Little research has been done investigating how effective our current educational materials are with Lacrosse coaches of grades 6-12.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross- Sectional

LEVEL of EVIDENCE: Level 4

METHODS: Self-administered, online survey that included closed ended questions regarding recognition of signs and symptoms, consequences of inappropriate care, perception of own knowledge, …

The Impact Of Hydration Status During Heat Acclimation On Physiological Strain And Exercise Performance, Michael W. Schleh Jan 2016

The Impact Of Hydration Status During Heat Acclimation On Physiological Strain And Exercise Performance, Michael W. Schleh

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Heat acclimation promotes adaptations to attenuate physiological and perceptual strain associated with heat stress, and may be enhanced by promoting dehydration during acclimation. Purpose: To determine i) the effect of fluid delivery during acclimation by inducing dehydration (DEH=0.5 mL / kg / 15 min) vs. euhydration (EUH=2.0 mL / kg / 15min) following three heat acclimation bouts on heat stress factors, and ii) to determine if fluid delivery (EUH vs. DEH) affects aerobic performance in the heat. Methods: Thirteen aerobically fit males completed 90-minute heat stress test (HST) in hot conditions (40°C, 30% RH) walking at 50% VO2 max …

The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In The Modulation Of Pp2a, Nicole M. Byrnes Jan 2014

The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In The Modulation Of Pp2a, Nicole M. Byrnes

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Transient, but severe global ischemia results in AMPA receptor (AMPAR) mediated delayed neuronal death (DND). AMPARs, a major glutamatergic receptor in the CNS, are heteromeric complexes composed of GluA1 - GluA4 subunits. Most AMPARs in the hippocampus are calcium-impermeable due to the presence of the edited form of the GluA2 subunit. Ischemia results in a down-regulation of GluA2 mRNA and protein expression, resulting in the expression of GluA2- lacking, calcium/zinc-permeable AMPARs. It has been indicated that these GluA2-lacking AMPARs play a key role in promoting DND following ischemic injury. Recent studies report that an oxidative stress signaling pathway is responsible …

The Meaning Of Pain In Cormac Mccarthy's Border Trilogy, Glenn Alton Jackson (Iii) Jan 2010

The Meaning Of Pain In Cormac Mccarthy's Border Trilogy, Glenn Alton Jackson (Iii)

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

While the majority of McCarthy’s work graphically depicts brutal violence, it often avoids portrayals of subjective pain. Although his first four novels incorporate descriptions of subjective pain at crucial points in the narrative, in the Border Trilogy, McCarthy overtly elucidates the myriad ways we make meaning from pain. An analysis of the depictions of subjective pain in the Border Trilogy, this paper suggests, can aid in a more complete understanding of McCarthy’s entire oeuvre. This study approaches the problem of pain in McCarthy’s work from a perspective that joins medical science and the humanities to show how this nearly universal …
