Public Land & Resources Law Review

Hecla Mining Company and its subsidiaries want to develop two industrial silver and copper mines––the Montanore and Rock Creek projects––beneath northwest Montana’s Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Environmental organizations, in just one of a series of legal challenges to protect high-quality designated resource waters and unique bull trout and grizzly bear habitat, brought an action seeking a declaration that Montana Department of Environmental Quality’s issuance of a permit for the Montanore Project was unlawful. The Montana Supreme Court, in a four-member majority, affirmed the district court’s vacatur and remanded the case to the state agency for further proceedings. The decision is celebrated …

Social Media And Its Impact On Travelers To Montana, Carter Bermingham, Glenna Hartman, Jeremy L. Sage May 2021

Social Media And Its Impact On Travelers To Montana, Carter Bermingham, Glenna Hartman, Jeremy L. Sage

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

News, real or not, travels faster than ever with the rise of social media platforms. Nearly everyone, everywhere, is capable of generating and disseminating information to large volumes of potential consumers. This information is often out of the direct control of the destination, business, or other entity for whom the news relates; it is unowned media. When a destination receives a flurry of attention from these various sources, either good or bad, several important questions arise in attempting to understand their impacts: (1) how long do these impressions last in potential visitor’s minds? And, (2) do these events/images influence travel …

A Midwest Migration With Endangered Whooping Cranes, Katherine Anne Hill May 2021

A Midwest Migration With Endangered Whooping Cranes, Katherine Anne Hill

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

In 1941, the world’s last migratory flock of whooping cranes was just 15 birds strong. Today, that flock has grown to over 500 birds and is increasing exponentially every year. But even as the flock continues to recover, their migratory corridor continues to shrink, due to the destruction of habitat by industrial agriculture, energy development, and other industries.

But throughout the most sparsely populated stretches of the Central Flyway, whooping cranes have some unlikely allies, too.

In Nebraska and Kansas, where wetlands and native prairie grasses have historically been drained, burned, and converted to cropland, some farmers are reversing that …

The Longitudinal Effects Of Sleep Quality On Executive Function, Oscar Kronenberger, Cali Caughie Apr 2021

The Longitudinal Effects Of Sleep Quality On Executive Function, Oscar Kronenberger, Cali Caughie

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Poor sleep quality is common today. However, our understanding of how sleep quality affects cognition over time is limited. The current study thus investigates the relationship between sleep quality and executive function longitudinally. Data from Waves 2 and 3 of the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) research project, an ongoing longitudinal study on health and well-being in mid-life adults, was used. During Wave 2, 881 participants were administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and performed the Stop and Go Task (SGT), which measures executive function. Nine years later, during Wave 3, these 881 participants were again administered …

Comparing Preliminary Telehealth Outcomes To In-Person Delivery Of A Rehabilitation Program For Stroke Survivors With Aphasia, Kortney M. Sims, Claire Buehler Apr 2021

Comparing Preliminary Telehealth Outcomes To In-Person Delivery Of A Rehabilitation Program For Stroke Survivors With Aphasia, Kortney M. Sims, Claire Buehler

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Background. Aphasia is a language impairment, typically resulting from left hemisphere strokes. Aphasia impairs the neural networks that allow individuals to read, write/type, speak, and understand spoken information, negatively impacting daily communication and quality of life. Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programs (ICAPs) are stroke rehabilitation programs that help people living with aphasia improve their language function, communicative participation, and quality of life. In response to COVID-19, ICAPs could no longer take place in-person, necessitating a rapid move to telehealth models. No evidence has been provided in the literature to demonstrate the efficacy or effectiveness of telehealth ICAPs.

Purpose. The purpose of …

Centering Trauma-Informed Care In Montana’S Juvenile Justice System: Why It’S Challenging, And Why It’S Important, Amelia Hawes Apr 2021

Centering Trauma-Informed Care In Montana’S Juvenile Justice System: Why It’S Challenging, And Why It’S Important, Amelia Hawes

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Youth incarceration is an urgent issue in the United States. Involvement with the juvenile justice system increases the risk of incarceration as an adult and results in profound and often lifelong social and economic consequences for young people. Even after release from prison, formerly incarcerated people face formal and informal barriers to educational attainment, job opportunities, and participation in civic life.

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, it is estimated that over 90% of justice-involved youth have experienced at least some trauma. There is a tremendous body of evidence demonstrating a relationship between trauma and juvenile offending. While …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Female Caregivers of Male Glioblastoma Patients Experience PTSD

Authors: Burke, Emily E.; Minns, Laurie A.

Abstract

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is most frequent among women, but perhaps even more so in female caregivers of male Glioblastoma patients. Glioblastoma itself is a seriously neuro-debilitating disease; an invasive brain cancer that offers poor prognosis and a lifetime’s worth of trauma for not only the patient, but caregiver as well. Due to the patient’s inability to function, the caregiver takes on the pressure of standing in for the mental processes of their loved ones, while juggling their own health. Most prominent among …
