Using Google’S Mobility Data To Understand Park Visitation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Note Of Caution, William Rice, Bing Pan Aug 2021

Using Google’S Mobility Data To Understand Park Visitation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Note Of Caution, William Rice, Bing Pan

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted park visitation around the globe. In an effort to un-derstand the factors influencing these changes, nu-merous attempts have been made to use big data to monitor changes in park use (e.g., Venter et al., 2020). Google's Community Mobility Reports repre-sent a dataset with significant potential in this re-gard. Released in April 2020, these reports were gen-erated on the hypothesis that "aggregated, anony-mized data could be helpful [to] make critical deci-sions to combat COVID-19" (Fitzpatrick & DeSalvo, 2020, para. 1). The heading on the reports' website asks browsers to "see how your community is mov-ing …

How To Engender Learning In The Learning Process? Mathematics, Events And The Invention Of A Mathematical Education, Sônia Maria Clareto, Giovani Cammarota Aug 2021

How To Engender Learning In The Learning Process? Mathematics, Events And The Invention Of A Mathematical Education, Sônia Maria Clareto, Giovani Cammarota

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article proposes an exercise of problematization and denaturalization of a math classroom that is born from research carried out with a cartographic approach, in which, when occupying the elementary school math classroom, questions are asked: what happens in a math classroom? Which mathematics happens in a classroom? The event is here in affinity with the philosophy of the event of Gilles Deleuze, in which event is that which cuts time off, drags it, breaks it. Events are possible worlds that erupt in the things that happen. To do so, the writing of this paper takes place in relation to …

The Montana Expression 2021: Resident Employment, Relocation, And Outdoor Recreation During Covid-19, Megan Schultz, Carter Bermingham

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

This report is a summary of Montana residents and their self-reported use of public lands and waterways during 2020 compared to previous years. Data were collected from January 1st to March 31st of 2021. As a result of the pandemic, the number of people participating in outdoor recreation in certain parts of the country increased significantly – Montana being one of those places. Public lands and waterways, like state and federally managed parks, reported record visitation numbers for some months of 2020. In addition, anecdotal reports from public land managers and tourism partners also suggests that the level of use …

Disrupting Settler Stories: Learning To Live With Respect, Intimacy, And Reciprocity On Colonized Land, Anna S. Favour Apr 2021

Disrupting Settler Stories: Learning To Live With Respect, Intimacy, And Reciprocity On Colonized Land, Anna S. Favour

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

These essays and illustrations are informed by the question of how to form meaningful connection to place and care for a place when that land is colonized; when the creation of this place is rooted in harm. The purpose is to explore questions that have arisen during four years of Environmental Studies education. I want to learn what it means to be an environmentalist – to have a deep respect for the land and its inhabitants in a manner that extends beyond conservation – a relationship centered around respect, intimacy, and reciprocity. I want to understand if it’s possible to …

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean Apr 2021

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

All nouns, determiners, and many adjectives in the Spanish language are grammatically designated as either masculine or feminine, and the default is always the masculine form. For example, “the tall boy” in Spanish is “el chico alto”, “the tall girl” is “la chica alta”, and if there is a group of tall children the plural form is the masculine “los chicos altos” even if there are females in the group. This binary gender division and masculine default can cause harm, however, when used in reference to women and non-binary people. This paper explores the recent movement to include a third …

Assessing The Role Of Time And Beavers In Driving Recovery Following Restoration, Shawnalee M. Voyles, Daylen Egger, Kory Shoja-Chaghorvand Apr 2021

Assessing The Role Of Time And Beavers In Driving Recovery Following Restoration, Shawnalee M. Voyles, Daylen Egger, Kory Shoja-Chaghorvand

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Ninemile Creek in Western Montana has been highly degraded by placer mining that took place from the 1800s to 1960s, resulting in a straightened stream disconnected from its floodplain by 10 m tall gravel piles. This degradation decreases water storage and makes the habitat less suitable for aquatic organisms. To improve habitat quality, Trout Unlimited has reconfigured four reaches along the creek starting in 2014 to create a new river channel and connected floodplain with two years between each restoration project. Due to the physical disturbance of reconfiguring the stream channel and building the floodplain, plant communities were reset in …

America At A Glance: Covid-19 Vaccination Among People With Disabilities, University Of Montana Rural Institute Apr 2021

America At A Glance: Covid-19 Vaccination Among People With Disabilities, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

There is a lack of foucs on how people with disabilities are experiencing COVID-19 vaccination efforts. Addressing this knowledge gap is critical to ensuring that people with disabilities are considered as vaccination efforts progress during the ongoing pandemic and future health crises. Overall, 19% of our sample of people with disabilities reported already being vaccinated, 56% wanted to get vaccinated, 10% were unsure, and 15% did not want to be vaccinated. Rural residents with disabilities reported higher rates of current vaccination, but higher rates of overall hesitancy, and more barriers to vaccination than urban residents with disabilities. Political party affiliation …

“On The Staff Of The Grand Canyon”: Assessing Manager And Stakeholder Perspectives On Sustainable Wilderness Visitor Use Management, William L. Rice, Oakes Spivey, Peter Newman, B. Derrick Taff Apr 2021

“On The Staff Of The Grand Canyon”: Assessing Manager And Stakeholder Perspectives On Sustainable Wilderness Visitor Use Management, William L. Rice, Oakes Spivey, Peter Newman, B. Derrick Taff

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Overall visitation to Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) grew 36%, and backcountry overnight visits increased 8% from 2010 to 2019. This research examines how park managers and other key stakeholders, such as park-partner staff, are managing increasing visitation levels. In total, 36 semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with park managers and other key stakeholders during the summer of 2019. This study aims to inform sustainable visitor use management at GRCA and other wildland protected areas by examining the social, physical, and managerial considerations described by respondents. Results demonstrate both immediate and long-term operational issues and constraints for park management stemming …

A Hand-Held, Photogrammetric, Approach To Riparian And Stream Assessment And Monitoring, Joseph Dehnert Feb 2021

A Hand-Held, Photogrammetric, Approach To Riparian And Stream Assessment And Monitoring, Joseph Dehnert

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Over 37,000 riparian restoration projects have been reported in the United States since 1980, but only 38% of those projects are currently being monitored; 70% of those being monitored reported that the restoration actions were not accomplishing their intended purposes. Because riparian zones serve as the connection between terrestrial and flowing freshwater ecosystems, it is important to identify and quantify their structural and functional roles in natural systems and monitor the restoration efforts being implemented. A rigorous understanding of the connection between riparian, geomorphic, and hydraulic processes provides a sound ecological foundation when identifying riparian management objectives and evaluating current, …

In The Shadow Of The Megadrought: Opportunities And Challenges For Addressing Loss And Damage From Climate Change In Central Chile, Elizabeth Tobey Feb 2021

In The Shadow Of The Megadrought: Opportunities And Challenges For Addressing Loss And Damage From Climate Change In Central Chile, Elizabeth Tobey

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The accelerated pace of anthropogenic climate change in recent decades has been accompanied by pressing questions, including many concerning responsibility and liability for the worst impacts of climate change on human populations. Greenhouse gas emissions from industrialized nations, which dwarf those from the developing world, have been causally linked to slow-onset trends such as sea level rise and increased incidences of acute climate-related disasters, both of which disproportionately affect poor and low-lying developing nations. This grim reality is central to the concept of Loss and Damage, a developing “third pillar” of international climate policy aimed at addressing the residual impacts …

"Its Own Little City": Service Work In Truck Stops, Michelle Williams Feb 2021

"Its Own Little City": Service Work In Truck Stops, Michelle Williams

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Montana truck stops act as a meeting place for long-haul truckers, vacationers, local commuters, and the workers simply trying to earn a living. Today, the employees at such truck stops operate at the intersection of customer service, the trucking industry, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Although each of these has been studied individually, the research I conducted during the summer and fall of 2020 offers a unique view of how customer service employees fared during political unrest, global health concerns, and financial struggle. Additionally, this study highlights the power dynamics that exist in the service industry by examining how such dynamics …

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr Feb 2021

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

According to one study, lemons are depicted in fifty-one percent of a sampling of Netherlandish paintings between 1500 and 1650, a time known as the Dutch Golden Age, as opposed to sixteen percent of Italian works made during the same period. Horticulturally, citrus plants flourish much easier in the warm Mediterranean climate, requiring special orangery hothouses to survive the cold Netherlandish winter, leading to the question as to why lemons were such a popular subject matter for Dutch painters. I have used a multivalent historical, socio-cultural, economic, and literary approach to attempt an interpretation of the lemon as object, subject, …

America At A Glance: 5310 & 5311 Transportation Funding In Rural Counties, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

The United States Federal Transit Administration (FTA) maintains two programs designed to support transportation for people with disabilities and rural communities. The FTA’s Elderly and Persons with Disabilities program (§5310) provides federal funding to states to assist in meeting the transportation needs of older adults (65+) and people with disabilities. The Formula Grants for Rural Areas program (§5311) provides funding for public transportation to rural areas with populations less than 50,000. Although 16% of Americans with disabilities and older adults live in rural counties, these counties only receive 5% of available funding for providing them with transportation (§5310), and 49% …

Energy Islands: Metaphors Of Power, Extractivism, And Justice In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onís Jan 2021

Energy Islands: Metaphors Of Power, Extractivism, And Justice In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onís

University of Montana Staff Publications

Energy Islands provides an urgent and nuanced portrait of collective action that resists racial capitalism, colonialism, and climate disruption. Weaving together historical and ethnographic research, Catalina M. de Onís challenges the master narratives of Puerto Rico as a tourist destination and site of “natural” disasters. She demonstrates how fossil-fuel economies are inextricably entwined with colonial practices and policies and how local community groups in Puerto Rico have struggled against energy coloniality and energy privilege to mobilize and transform power from the ground up. This work decenters continental contexts and deconstructs damaging hierarchies that devalue and exploit disenfranchised rural, coastal communities. …
