Hear Me Roar, Abigail R. Seethoff
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Hear Me Roar, a compilation of personal essays interspersed with short forms, grapples with the nuances of compliance versus autonomy in the context of the male gaze, beauty standards, and pop culture. The collection also explores what it means to treasure something—another person, an object—and how to express and deepen that affection.
Understanding Native American Hemp Production, Cynthia Marie Steckdaub Coleman
Understanding Native American Hemp Production, Cynthia Marie Steckdaub Coleman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In this thesis, I take an in-depth look at Native American hemp production through the lens of three hemp projects. My research sits within the history of colonization and dispossession. I look at two tribal hemp projects and one individual Native American hemp farm and describe how each project reaches for tribal sovereignty through hemp production. I look at how hemp fits into tribal worldviews, cultures, and the relationship tribal farmers have with hemp. Focusing on key elements of relationship, like respect, reciprocity, and responsibility, I examine how hemp production can be incorporated into Indigenous communities. Beyond relationships with the …

Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of my portfolio is conservation education, using birds as an example of how to connect people of all ages to their natural environment. Birds were chosen as an example because of a personal curiosity for the animal, and because they are an accessible and tangible element of nature for all people, urban and rural. The first component is a Curriculum Development Guide created for the Wings Over Water program of the Montana Natural History Center. It synthesizes scientific research on Ospreys, relates central themes of the literature to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides inventive activity ideas …

Increasing Environmental Education Accessibility Through New Media, Farrah Masoumi
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This portfolio shows projects that aim to create a larger outreach for environmental education through digital education content and expand already existing programs to enhance the learning and teaching experience. All of these components highlight the integration between environmental education and new media. By being based online, where many people spend their time, it can serve as a tool to get people outside. Audiences can learn more about the environment they are a part of and give them the power and knowledge to make changes to become more responsible global citizens in their day to day lives.

The Consolidation Of Corn: A Case Study To Inspire Design For The Wicked Problems Of Our Time, Sophie Mae Moon
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
This research project addresses the issue of consolidation in the American food system through a case study of corn production. This research describes the status quo of corn production in the United States, focusing particularly on the role of the federal government and producers in identifying the causes and influences leading to the consolidation of corn production. This project also describes the effects of the consolidation of corn production on producers, consumers, citizens, and the environment. Beyond identifying the influences contributing to the consolidation of corn, and the impacts of consolidation on people and the environment, this research project investigates …
