Ethnomodelling As A Glocalization Process Of Mathematical Practices Through Cultural Dynamism, Daniel Clark Orey, Milton Rosa Aug 2021

Ethnomodelling As A Glocalization Process Of Mathematical Practices Through Cultural Dynamism, Daniel Clark Orey, Milton Rosa

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Ethnomodelling can be considered as the association between ethnomathematics and mathematical modelling that enables members of distinct cultural groups to perceive a different reality in relation to the nature of mathematical knowledge. It also provides insights into many diverse forms of mathematics developed locally. Thus, ethnomodelling is defined as the study of mathematical phenomena that adds cultural components to the modelling process. The development of this connection is conducted through three cultural approaches: local, global, and glocal, which are used in the conduction of ethnomodelling investigations that aim to work against colonialism in order to value and respect sociocultural diversity …

An Analysis Of The Influences Of A Hybrid Learning Environment In The Solution Of Vector Tasks According To The Anthropological Theory Of The Didactic (Atd), Jany Santos Souza Goulart, Luiz Márcio Santos Farias, Hamid Chaachoua Aug 2021

An Analysis Of The Influences Of A Hybrid Learning Environment In The Solution Of Vector Tasks According To The Anthropological Theory Of The Didactic (Atd), Jany Santos Souza Goulart, Luiz Márcio Santos Farias, Hamid Chaachoua

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper discusses a part of a doctoral study based on the theoretical pillars of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). Supported by this theory, our research interest followed a path that led us to the teaching of the mathematical object vector and its institutional configuration in a Mathematics Teaching course at Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), in the state of Bahia, Brazil, centered on two dichotomous aspects. The first one refers to the possibility of application and institutional relevance of this mathematical object. The second aspect is related to the obstacles encountered in the didactical scope, …

Metasynthesis Of Research In Mathematics Education: Foci And Theoretical-Methodological Foundations, Saddo Ag Almouloud

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this article, I carry out a qualitative metasynthesis of six doctoral theses that were directed by me, identifying the theoretical and methodological frameworks that support these researches, and how the articulations were made between different theories chosen. I also revisit the results achieved by the studies to highlight their relevance to the Mathematics Education area. This study, although not exhaustive, provides a vision of possible dialogs of Mathematics Education (or education) theories related to teaching and learning of mathematics and the Didactics of Mathematics. The diversity of theories and the specificities of each of them confirm the idea that …

Inequality And The Dead: Historic Cemetery In Missoula And The Chinese People Left Behind, Emily Owens Apr 2021

Inequality And The Dead: Historic Cemetery In Missoula And The Chinese People Left Behind, Emily Owens

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Missoula grew rapidly over the past century and a half, with urban expansion quickly infringing on past “edges” of the city where burial grounds were rapidly replaced by residential development. The Cherry Street Cemetery in the Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood is one such place. While some of the graves at the Cherry Street Cemetery were reinterred to another cemetery in Missoula in advance of 20th-century urban growth, my research draws attention to the fact that not everyone was reinterred. As a result, burials left behind have been built over for over 100 years. As an Anthropology student focusing on …

Something Old, Something New; Where Classic Literature Meets Creative Writing, Arwen Baxter Apr 2021

Something Old, Something New; Where Classic Literature Meets Creative Writing, Arwen Baxter

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

I started this project as a study tool for my upper division literature courses. For every story I read, I would write a poem, sometimes based on my general reaction or a specific line, or just a word that resonated. I would use these free form poetry sessions to help clarify what each text meant to me and the facets I was most interested in exploring through longer essays. Over time, the poems became a goal in themselves. I find that Poetry has a great power of synthesis, that as a practice it can distill meaning into its purest forms. …

An Exploration Of Ethnobotanically Significant Plants To The Native American Tribes Of Montana, Margaret I. Magee

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

An Exploration of Ethnobotanically Significant Plants to the Native American Tribes of Montana

Ethnobotany is the study of the human uses of plants; for the Native Tribes of Montana these uses refer to everything from food, to ceremony, to medicine and everything in between. As a collaboration with the Payne Family Native American Center Ethnobotanical gardens, I conducted research on the various plants and their uses that are of particular significance to the 12 Tribes and 7 reservations across the state of MT. I collected information from first-hand experience working as an intern at the ethnobotanical garden, through discussions lead …

Damming Celilo Falls: Mourning A Miracle, Farryl Elisa Hunt

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

ABSTRACT FOR MASTER’S THESIS

By Lisa Hunt

Devastation and Displacement: The Destruction of Native Communities as a Result of Specifically the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River in North Dakota and the Dalles Dams on the Columbia River in Oregon

The building of the Dalles Dam along the Columbia river, separating Oregon and Washington, inflicted severe losses over sovereignty rights for the surrounding Native communities. Long-lasting negative effects have occurred towards their means of support and led to the declining quality of life. The drowning of Celilo Falls by the building of the Dalles dam is a heartbreaking tale of …

An Inclusive Future: Creating Interest, Diversity And Inclusion In Archaeology Through Children’S Literature, Erin D. Rosenkrance Feb 2021

An Inclusive Future: Creating Interest, Diversity And Inclusion In Archaeology Through Children’S Literature, Erin D. Rosenkrance

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

An Inclusive Future:

Creating Interest, Diversity and Inclusion in Archaeology through Children’s Literature

In the wake of major social justice movements such as the Dakota Access Pipeline, LGBTQ rights and the Black Lives Matter movement, the topics of inequality and diversity have become major talking points across the globe. In response, universities and colleges have made a call for representation by black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) faculty, staff and students. In the field of anthropology and archaeology the need is obvious. Sara Gonzalez, Curator of Archaeology at the Burke Museum explains, “…in educating the next generation we have …

Bitterroot, Bitter History: Heritage Along The Nez Perce National Historic Trail, Emory Chandler Padgett Feb 2021

Bitterroot, Bitter History: Heritage Along The Nez Perce National Historic Trail, Emory Chandler Padgett

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Stretching along more than 1,000 miles of dense forest, mountain passes, meandering rivers, and open prairie, the Nez Perce National Historic Trail (NPNHT) catalogs the events and impact of the Nez Perce War of 1877—a war that was transformational for the Nez Perce (Niimiipuu) people and white settlers across the inland northwest. The war’s history, which remains relevant today, is interpreted primarily through informative roadside signage. This signage, developed over decades, has accumulated in a confusing muddle of different narratives, values, and perspectives that is harmful to public learning and conceptions of heritage throughout the region. Heritage, which is the …

Who, Me? Yes, You!- Consultation And Collaboration In The Museum As A Form Of Crisis Remediation, Micaela E. Connolly Feb 2021

Who, Me? Yes, You!- Consultation And Collaboration In The Museum As A Form Of Crisis Remediation, Micaela E. Connolly

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Museums face what has been named the “curation crisis” in a variety of manners. The crisis itself ranges from lack of personnel, funding, depleted storage space, etcetera. The question then presents itself, how do we, as museum professionals, remediate the effects of the curation crisis and prevent it from growing and occurring in new institutions. One such manner must include an increased level of consultation between museum personnel and outside sources. Here, I analyze the uses of consultation in the museum setting, ranging types of museums, and the benefits that may or may not occur in remediation efforts using this …

Public Places, Intimate Spaces: An Archaeology Of Prostitution In Missoula, Montana, Kate Gonzales Feb 2021

Public Places, Intimate Spaces: An Archaeology Of Prostitution In Missoula, Montana, Kate Gonzales

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

My research examines artifacts recovered from Cranky Sam Public House (CSPH), a brewery located in downtown Missoula where, in the summer of 2019, construction uncovered a significant amount of archaeological evidence related to Missoula's historic red-light district and Chinese community. This red-light district began operating in the late nineteenth century and continued to grow significantly until its closure in 1916. While many perceptions of early sex workers in American West towns focus on the vice activity associated with their employment, I hope to shift toward a narrative that provides alternative perspectives of these diverse women's lives. My thesis questions how …

Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog Feb 2021

Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Classroom Language Socialization:

Language acquisition, educator beliefs and intercultural communicative competence

Language and culture are intricately intertwined. In the past, language structure was thought to be the “purist” form of culture, but then the work of Dell Hymes (1972) on communicative competence and the relationship between language and culture brought a shift to the way language systems were understood. Rather than being studied separately from their communicative act, Hymes argued for the need to understand language through context. With the help of Canale and Swain (1980) these ideas about language brought a shift in educational literature and consequently the design …

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr Feb 2021

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

According to one study, lemons are depicted in fifty-one percent of a sampling of Netherlandish paintings between 1500 and 1650, a time known as the Dutch Golden Age, as opposed to sixteen percent of Italian works made during the same period. Horticulturally, citrus plants flourish much easier in the warm Mediterranean climate, requiring special orangery hothouses to survive the cold Netherlandish winter, leading to the question as to why lemons were such a popular subject matter for Dutch painters. I have used a multivalent historical, socio-cultural, economic, and literary approach to attempt an interpretation of the lemon as object, subject, …

Disposition Of Wwii Vessels Near Okinawa In 1945, Kathryn M. Kemp Feb 2021

Disposition Of Wwii Vessels Near Okinawa In 1945, Kathryn M. Kemp

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Disposition of WWII Vessels Near Okinawa in 1945

Twenty-seven ships sunk in battle off the coast of Okinawa in 1945 during WWII, of which the locations are unknown to the US Navy and the Japanese government. The purpose of this research was to use archival and historical sources to identify these ships in records and discern the approximate possible whereabouts of these vessels for the use of a US Navy reconnaissance project. This project’s ultimate goal is to repatriate these vessels to the US and study their artifacts and locations, a new venture for the Navy. With this information, the …

Turnover During A Corporate Merger: How Workplace Network Change Influences Staying, M. Woehler, Theresa M. Floyd, N. Shah, J. E. Marineau, W. Sung, Travis J. Grosser, J. Fagan, G. Labianca Jan 2021

Turnover During A Corporate Merger: How Workplace Network Change Influences Staying, M. Woehler, Theresa M. Floyd, N. Shah, J. E. Marineau, W. Sung, Travis J. Grosser, J. Fagan, G. Labianca

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

The upheaval created by a merger can precipitate voluntary employee turnover, causing merging organizations to lose valuable knowledge-based resources and competencies precisely when they are needed most to achieve the merger’s integration goals. While prior research has shown that employees’ connections to coworkers reduce their likelihood of leaving, we know little about how personal social networks should change to increase the likelihood of staying through the disruptive post-merger integration period. In a pre–post study of social network change, we investigate over 15 million email communications between employees within two large merging consumer goods firms over 2 years. We use insights …

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten Jan 2021

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Drawing on the Semiotic-cultural approach and the Anthropological theory of the didactic, this paper discusses how exploration of historically framed conceptualizations of mathematical objects can establish bridges between different mathematical areas such as calculus and Euclidean geometry. A classroom intervention study in two secondary mathematics class-rooms involving dynamic geometry software tools to support the construction of a parabola and its tangent and aiming at the development of representational flexibility between algebraic/ functional and geometrical approaches, illustrates how students may benefit from participation in such explorations.

School Leadership Under Apartheid South Africa As Portrayed In The Apartheid Archive Projectand Interpreted Through Freirean Education, Kevin Bruce Deitle Jan 2021

School Leadership Under Apartheid South Africa As Portrayed In The Apartheid Archive Projectand Interpreted Through Freirean Education, Kevin Bruce Deitle

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to examine how teachers, school leaders, and students rationalize their roles in the educational process when their institution is bounded by an educational system that openly strives against them. For a context, this study examined apartheid-era South Africa, from 1948 to 1994, which established social and administrative policies that deliberately curtailed the education of Indigenous and other South Africans, as a means of oppressing non-European ethnic groups.

In lieu of face-to-face interviews, stories and interviews submitted to The Apartheid Archive Project, curated by the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, portrayed …
