Comparing Differences For Non-Introgressing Genes In Chickadees, Eliana Lowe, Scott A. Taylor, Georgy Semenov, Rena Schweizer Apr 2023

Comparing Differences For Non-Introgressing Genes In Chickadees, Eliana Lowe, Scott A. Taylor, Georgy Semenov, Rena Schweizer

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Hybridization between species plays a very important role in the overall evolutionary history of many taxa. The study of hybrid zones can also provide insight into how species are responding to environmental factors such as climate change and changes in species interactions. The hybrid zone between the northern black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) and the southern Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) provides an insight into how hybridization is affecting two distinct species. As climate change worsens and Carolina chickadees are pushed more north to avoid sweltering temperatures, the hybrid zone is actively moving with them about 1 kilometer …

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity In West Mexico, Emma Zoiss Apr 2023

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity In West Mexico, Emma Zoiss

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Despite attempts at systematic research, we are still missing critical information about pre-Hispanic populations in the Aztatlán region, one of the least studied regions of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica. The Aztatlán region is located in West Mexico and extends from Sinola to Jalisco, including regions in Durango, Michoacán, and Zacatecas. This research will focus on those individuals recovered from an archeological site referred to as Tizapán el Alto, located in the highlands of the Lake Chapala Basin. The integration of genetics into our understanding of the past affords a better understanding of the archaeological record, and broader context of the populations of …

Arithmetic: Craft Or Art? A Recursive (Re)View Of Paul Lockhart’S A Mathematician’S Lament And Arithmetic, Jennifer S. Thom

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Paul Lockhart is a former computer programmer, elementary teacher, research mathematician, university professor, and somewhat more recently a K-12 mathematics teacher and author. Lockhart’s first written composition appeared two decades ago in 2002. All of 25 pages, his essay A Mathematician's Lament began like this:

A musician wakes from a terrible nightmare. In this dream he finds himself in a society where music education has been made mandatory ... Educators, school systems, and the state are put in charge of this vital project. Studies are commissioned, committees are formed, and decisions are made—all without the advice or participation of a …

Peoples Of India: Asian Descent Or Separate Ancestral Category?, Stephanie "Stacie" A. Craig Feb 2023

Peoples Of India: Asian Descent Or Separate Ancestral Category?, Stephanie "Stacie" A. Craig

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Within the realm of forensic anthropology when analyzing a set of remains for identification, analysis parameters with results provide four main categories: European, African, Asian, or mixed ancestry. Some software such as FORDISC may include other groups such as Guatemalan, but they still seem centered on the 3 main groupings of European, African, or Asian. These groupings are from a history of being focused on attributing “race” to individuals and coloring everything through a lens of “superiority”. Peoples of India's skeletal remains when analyzed depict features associated with Europeans, Africans, and Asians causing them to be labeled many times as …

An Acoustic Analysis Of French Vowel Phoneme Substitutions In Native English Speakers, Madeline G. Strah Feb 2023

An Acoustic Analysis Of French Vowel Phoneme Substitutions In Native English Speakers, Madeline G. Strah

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Learning a second language is very difficult and may require years of practice to reach fluency. However, theories like the Speech Learning Model (SLM), tell us that regardless of years of practice, perfect pronunciation of sounds that are absent in a speaker’s first language is difficult, especially if the sound is relatively similar to one in the speaker’s first language. For instance, the French vowel sound /y/, in the word sucre ‘sugar’, is absent in American English, and is very similar to the sound /u/, like in the word soupe ‘soup’. These form a minimal pair where the sounds …

Children Of Casas Grandes: A Molecular Examination Of Subadults At Convento And Paquimé, Lacy J. Hazelwood, Holli K. Mcdonald Feb 2023

Children Of Casas Grandes: A Molecular Examination Of Subadults At Convento And Paquimé, Lacy J. Hazelwood, Holli K. Mcdonald

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Bioarchaeological research has played a significant role in understanding the Casas Grandes region in northern Mexico. Excavations at the archaeological sites of Convento and Paquimé in Chihuahua, Mexico recovered at least 652 burials dating to AD 700-1450, providing a robust skeletal population for investigations, including research on population demographics, patterns of violence, and social stratification. While there is extensive literature on these individuals, research focusing solely on subadults is nonexistent. This study employs genetic sex-typing using real-time PCR followed by high-resolution melting analysis, as well as strontium isotopic analysis on subadult remains from both Convento and Paquimé to provide estimations …

Y-Chromosome Dna Extraction From Post-Cranial Skeletal Elements, Mykala D. Ward Feb 2023

Y-Chromosome Dna Extraction From Post-Cranial Skeletal Elements, Mykala D. Ward

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

With a reported number of over 8,000 individual sets of human remains unidentified in the United States, improved methods are necessary to collect and accurately extract DNA from human bone while being minimally destructive. Methods are not standardized for where on the skeletal remains to collect bone samples and often result in sampling far more material than is needed.

The molecular yields observed in trabecular and cortical bone samples taken from human remains could help determine what sample types are needed for successful DNA analysis. With a hypothesis stating that due to the structure of trabecular bone, samples that contain …

The Future Of Dna Repatriation: Interaction, Dialogue And Creating Trust, Anna-Marie David Feb 2023

The Future Of Dna Repatriation: Interaction, Dialogue And Creating Trust, Anna-Marie David

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This project sought to understand the struggles currently faced with the repatriation of human remains using the United States and NAGPRA as the basis for understanding the cultural conflicts associated with the process. The use of DNA in repatriation is a widely discussed and argued topic in bioarcheology today and the ethical ambiguity is a contentious matter for government institutions, tribal authorities, cultural managers, and communities throughout the world. To some cultures the use of DNA analysis, which by design are invasive procedure, is a further invasion that goes against their cultural foundations. Excluding the views of the collection of …

Aspectual Markers In African American English(Es), Kevin Vrla Feb 2023

Aspectual Markers In African American English(Es), Kevin Vrla

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

African American English (Or AAE, a variant of Standard American English(SAE)) has several features that allow for a diverse array of temporal information to be encoded not found in SAE. Here I touch on two such methods, both regarding past events: Been and Done. Both been and done are employed by speakers to provide additional context and I posit that they appear in various constructions providing specific pragmatic information. My analysis has been grounded in previous investigations and supported by data collected colloquially.

Been is the word commonly used to indicate distant past events. When used in a verb …

Critical Exhibition Methods In Museums, Jaimie Davis Ms Jan 2023

Critical Exhibition Methods In Museums, Jaimie Davis Ms

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Art and anthropology are intimately intertwined as art is an extension of culture which falls under the purview of anthropology. Utilizing interdisciplinary methodology that incorporates both anthropology's considerations for culture and art's consideration of aesthetic creates the best possible methodology for exhibition in museums. Art museums have enough aesthetic and could benefit from the considerations an anthropology's school of thought.

The Analysis Of Ancient Dna: From Mitochondria To Pathogens, Tre Joseph Marcus Blohm

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Ancient DNA (aDNA) is arguably one of the most difficult science fields to work in due to the constant battle against contamination and degradation; however, it is also one of the most rewarding. aDNA researchers have consistently garnered interest the world over with their findings and sparking the curiosity of many who wish to know more about who we are as Homo sapiens. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and pathogen DNA were used in this dissertation to understand more about where populations came from, how they moved, and what their environment was like through the identification of their maternally inherited mtDNA and …

Meta-Analysis Of Scent Detection Canines And Potential Factors Influencing Their Success Rates, Molly Marie Jaskinia

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Objective: This is a meta-analysis focused on the success rates of scent detection canines and potential factors that could influence their accuracy. A series of statistical analyses were conducted to determine if certain demographic factors, such as the dog’s gender, age, and breed, have an effect on a scent dog’s accuracy during a search. Or if more circumstantial factors, like the dog’s level of experience in scent work, the type of target scent, and their handler’s awareness of the target’s location, affect the outcome of the search.

Materials and Methods: A dataset was created from 37 different articles consisting of …

The Cultivation Of Therapeutic Landscapes: A Medical Anthropological Approach To Understanding The Health And Wellbeing Qualities Of The Garden Of 1,000 Buddhas, Andrew Thomas Ranck Jan 2023

The Cultivation Of Therapeutic Landscapes: A Medical Anthropological Approach To Understanding The Health And Wellbeing Qualities Of The Garden Of 1,000 Buddhas, Andrew Thomas Ranck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Medical anthropology researchers have just begun exploring therapeutic landscapes as the benefits of location are just now being understood in the field as potentially promoting a sense of healing and wellbeing. Some cultural heritage sites are translocated sites that are important to disseminate traditional cultural knowledge. While some of these cultural heritage landscapes become formal cultural resources, others also add a level of therapeutic quality to their existence. The Garden of 1,000 Buddhas was such a location. Discerning how these sites develop and are mitigated through affective responses, messaging symbols and personal beliefs was an important part of the process. …

An Examination Of The Food System, Foodscape, Dietary Patterns, And Accolated Health Outcomes Of Salish People Within The Confederated Salish And Kootenai Nation, Joshua William Brown

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Often an individualistic, consumerist strategy is promoted as the solution to decrease the growing prevalence of diet-related diseases. Unfortunately, this logic is ahistorical and apolitical while privileging pathological individualism, capitalistic consumerism, and prevalent diets within the United States. This reasoning fails to recognize diet construction across time by ideologies, policies, and practices. Such an outlook misses the reality that many people cannot escape the grip of the modern, pervasive, ultra-processed food system.

Several Native American populations find themselves plagued with high rates of diet-related diseases. Standard mantra shoulders these communities with their plight, often framing the discourse as personal responsibility …

The term “cultural place-based” is used to ground this research—a specific spiritual place linked to cultural and language-based education within the homelands of the Dakȟóta, Nakoda, and Lakota peoples who inhabit territories in Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Canada: The Native people regard these as their homelands. In the Dakȟóta language, itȟáŋčhaŋ translates to “a leader, boss, person in charge, position of authority, office, management, and political power,” (Lakota Language Consortium, Llc., 2013). The author utilizes the word itȟáŋčhaŋ as the cultural–educational leadership view in creating a cultural place-based model. This research identifies the impact indicators of implementing a …
