Widespread Over-Expression Of The X Chromosome In Sterile F-1 Hybrid Mice, Jeffrey M. Good, Thomas Giger, Matthew D. Dean, Michael W. Nachman Sep 2010

Widespread Over-Expression Of The X Chromosome In Sterile F-1 Hybrid Mice, Jeffrey M. Good, Thomas Giger, Matthew D. Dean, Michael W. Nachman

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The X chromosome often plays a central role in hybrid male sterility between species, but it is unclear if this reflects underlying regulatory incompatibilities. Here we combine phenotypic data with genome-wide expression data to directly associate aberrant expression patterns with hybrid male sterility between two species of mice. We used a reciprocal cross in which F-1 males are sterile in one direction and fertile in the other direction, allowing us to associate expression differences with sterility rather than with other hybrid phenotypes. We found evidence of extensive over-expression of the X chromosome during spermatogenesis in sterile but not in fertile …

Women Belonging In The Social Worlds Of Graduate Mathematics, Abbe H. Herzig Jul 2010

Women Belonging In The Social Worlds Of Graduate Mathematics, Abbe H. Herzig

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The participation of women in post-graduate mathematics still lags substantially behind that of men. Drawing upon sociocultural theories of learning, I argue that success in graduate school necessitates learning mathematical content, participating in mathematical practices, and developing a sense of belonging in mathematics. Using an institutional ethnography approach, I interviewed 12 women graduate students from three mathematics departments in the U.S. to document their experiences within the social relations of graduate mathematics. They described both intrinsic and extrinsic obstacles to belonging, including a tension between their desire to belong and their needs to distance themselves from what they perceived to …

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay Feb 2010

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the socio-cultural dimensions of obstacles facing solar photovoltaic projects in two villages in rural Nepal. The study was conducted in Humla District, Nepal, one of the most remote and impoverished regions of the country. There are no roads in the district, homes lack running water and villagers’ health suffers from high levels of indoor air pollution from open cooking/heating fires and the smoky torches traditionally burned for light. The introduction of solar energy is important to these villagers, as it removes one major source of indoor air pollution from homes and provides brighter light than the traditional …

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2009-2010, Kelly Webster Jan 2010

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2009-2010, Kelly Webster

The Writing Center: Reports

The 2009-2010 academic year marked continued growth and change in The Writing Center’s services. Persistent faculty and student desire for effective writing tutoring and instruction compelled Writing Center staff to find innovative ways to keep apace the growing demand for Writing Center services. Conducting 4,053 one-to-one consultations with undergraduate and graduate student writers, The Writing Center remained flexible enough to meet students’ needs for well-informed readers and for writing instruction throughout their academic tenures. Writing Center staff facilitated more consultations and presented more in-class workshops at the invitation of faculty than in any previous academic year, a fact that speaks …

Examining Narratives Of Place: Representations Of Xinjiang In Tourism And Geography Education, Michael Church Jan 2010

Examining Narratives Of Place: Representations Of Xinjiang In Tourism And Geography Education, Michael Church

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis examines how Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, located in northwest China, is represented in tourism and geographic education literature. The research demonstrates the limited and distorted place narratives of Xinjiang that are promoted by the government-backed tourist enterprise in China for consumption by English language speakers; as well as, the inadequate and uncritical representations of the region currently available to students in the United States. Qualitative content analysis methodology is employed to investigate the narrative representations of Xinjiang contained within tourist brochures, geography textbooks, and regionally appropriate curricular guides. The thesis includes a body of geographic lesson plans pertaining …

Female Competition And The Role Of Testosterone In A Polygynous System, Lars Stefan Ekernas Jan 2010

Female Competition And The Role Of Testosterone In A Polygynous System, Lars Stefan Ekernas

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Testosterone plays an important role in male competitive ability, and it may play a similar function in females. Female-female competition for resources is often associated with high testosterone, both within females and in comparison to males. Positive associations between testosterone and competition are most likely to be seen in systems with high female-female competition. Resource defense polygyny may be one such system since females congregate on high-quality nutrient sources, leading to substantial opportunities for interference competition. I studied female Grant’s gazelle (Nanger granti), a classic resource defense polygynous species, to investigate female competition and its relationship to testosterone. I found …

Fort Owen: The History And Archaeology Of A Contact Period Site In Western Montana, Donald Merritt Jan 2010

Fort Owen: The History And Archaeology Of A Contact Period Site In Western Montana, Donald Merritt

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Fort Owen was part of recent historical western expansion into Montana, influencing both the cultural and environmental landscape of the state and the fort’s own existence. The Fort Owen collection provided the opportunity to research the history and archaeology of Fort Owen as a contact period site and as the first historic-period agricultural center in Montana. Fort Owen provided goods and services to a variety of individuals and was the nexus of settlement for the region for several years during the latter portion of the 19th century. Six goals of this thesis were to: 1) inventory the Fort Owen artifacts …

From Subsistence To Dependence: The Legacy Of Reclamation And Allotment On Quechan Indian Lands, 1700-1940, Ian Michael Smith Jan 2010

From Subsistence To Dependence: The Legacy Of Reclamation And Allotment On Quechan Indian Lands, 1700-1940, Ian Michael Smith

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Quechan Indians of southeastern California’s Fort Yuma Indian Reservation have occupied the fertile floodplain near the confluence of the Colorado and Gila rivers for more than 300 years. Since their southward migration to this area sometime in the seventeenth century, tribal members supported themselves through the adoption of a multifaceted subsistence strategy that incorporated cultivated agriculture, the semi-cultivation of wild plants, and the gathering of wild-grown foods. To support their agricultural endeavors, the Quechans relied on the annual flooding of the Colorado River to provide both irrigation water and naturally fertilizing silt to the river-bottom lands on which they …

Fuels Management Policy And Practice In The U.S. Forest Service, Erik K. Hakanson Jan 2010

Fuels Management Policy And Practice In The U.S. Forest Service, Erik K. Hakanson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This dissertation investigates the history and development of wildland fire and fuels management policy in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the implementation of this policy in fuels management project planning at the national forest and ranger district levels. The policy guiding fuels management is broad and ambiguous but may be summarized as: 1) reducing the risks posed by wildland fire and 2) restoring or maintaining ecosystem health and sustainability. Wildland fire management policy is interagency in scope, including input from state governments and is dispersed among a multitude of policy and strategy documents, such as the 1995/2001 Federal Wildland …

Gender, Body, And Wilderness: Searching For Refuge, Connection, And Ecological Belonging, Angela Marie Meyer Jan 2010

Gender, Body, And Wilderness: Searching For Refuge, Connection, And Ecological Belonging, Angela Marie Meyer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this study was to explore, describe, and explain how people (gbtlq identified persons in particular) experience gender and body in wilderness settings. The motivations for this research include: the current context of gender and gender oppression in American society; the potential of wilderness experiences to offer different ways of being and escape from social constrictions; and gaps in the literature on gender and wilderness. A qualitative/interpretive approach was employed for this research which encompasses aspects of phenomenology, feminist methodology, and grounded theory. The results and analysis for this study yielded an analytical story about ecological belonging which …

Post-Course Environmental Behavior Change Of Wild Rockies Field Institute Participants, Theodore Rosenberger Morrison Jan 2010

Post-Course Environmental Behavior Change Of Wild Rockies Field Institute Participants, Theodore Rosenberger Morrison

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In light of the environmental crisis facing the world, the need for citizens to behave in an environmentally responsible manner is critical to finding lasting solutions. After conducting and analyzing 20 in-depth interviews with alumni of the Wild Rockies Field Institute (WRFI), this study found that despite elevated pre-course levels of environmentally responsible behavior most participants reported an increased level of post course environmental behavior change. Post-course impacts ranged from a change of, or further investment in academic and career goals, lifestyle choices, empowerment, ethical development and political activity. Participants reported these outcomes were influenced by a variety of course …

Quantifying Trends In Our National Parks: A Landscape Level Analysis Of Climate Change And Ecosystem Productivity, Jessica R. Haas Jan 2010

Quantifying Trends In Our National Parks: A Landscape Level Analysis Of Climate Change And Ecosystem Productivity, Jessica R. Haas

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The U.S. National Parks are an integral part of our National Heritage. They are now, more than ever, experiencing threats from outside forces that are difficult to evaluate, such as climate change. The magnitude and direction of change will vary spatially across the landscape, making it difficult for park managers to adopt just one approach to managing for climate change. Therefore, there must be a systematic way to analyze climate trends and the subsequent effects on ecosystems, which is unbiased and useful in varying climates and landscapes. Through robust quantification of the rates of change for key climate variables (temperature, …

"The Lawmen Faced The Outlaws, No Badge Upon A Breast:" Historical Memory And The Legacy Of Henry Plummer And The Montana Vigilantes, Melissa Poindexter Thomasma Jan 2010

"The Lawmen Faced The Outlaws, No Badge Upon A Breast:" Historical Memory And The Legacy Of Henry Plummer And The Montana Vigilantes, Melissa Poindexter Thomasma

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the winter of 1863-1864, the Montana vigilantes hanged over twenty men in and around Bannack and Virginia City, including the region's elected sheriff, Henry Plummer. The mob claimed that these men were members of a highly-organized Road Agent Gang. While no evidence of this organization of highwaymen exists, the episode endures in the popular history of Montana; this thesis explores four elements of the legacy of this episode. First, it presents a biography of Henry Plummer and brief summary of the organization and actions of the Vigilance Committee. Second, it establishes an historiography of the episode; it couches the …
