The Impacts Of A Nonindigenous Marine Predator In A California Bay, Edwin D. Grosholz, Gregory M. Ruiz, Cheryl A. Dean, Kim A. Shirley, John L. Maron, Peter G. Connors
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Coastal marine ecosystems worldwide are being altered rapidly by the invasion of nonindigenous species. Unlike terrestrial and freshwater systems, the impacts of an invading species have never been quantified on multiple trophic levels for a marine food web. We measured the impact of the nonindigenous green crab, Carcinus maenas, on a coastal marine food web in central California and found that this predator exerted strong “top-down” control, significantly reducing the abundances of several of the 20 invertebrate species monitored over a 9-yr period. Densities of native clams, Nutricola tantilla and Nutricola confusa, and native shore crabs, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, showed 5-fold …

Lewis & Clark National Estimation And Awareness Study, Issues & Answers Network, Inc.
Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
The first of three Lewis and Clark related studies funded by Montana's Tourism Advisory Council in fiscal year 2000, this report provides visitor projections for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in 2003-2006 as well as profiles of those visitors. The study included over 2,000 telephone surveys in the contiguous United States less Montana and is a nationally representative cross-section of the U.S. population. In addition, the report examines interest in and awareness of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and the Bicentennial.

Cottonwood Creek Preliminary Assessment, John D. Lhotak, Jeffrey W. Dunn, Victoria Edwards, Michael Sanctuary, G. Hughes, Matthew V. Vitale
Clark Fork Symposium Archives
Cottonwood Creek is located in Powell County, Montana and flows through the town of Deer Lodge. The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), will be working with ranch owners along Cottonwood Creek on restoration and conservation projects in the spring of 2001. In September and October of 2000, six graduate students from the University of Montana completed a baseline assessment of the lower Cottonwood Creek watershed, including the tributary Reese Anderson Creek. The assessment is the start of a more comprehensive assessment to be completed in the summer of 2001. The purpose of this baseline assessment is to characterize the current …

Plant Materials Centers Provide Vegetative Solutions, Larry Holzworth, Dwight Tober, Dan Ogle
Clark Fork Symposium Archives
Current land management practices are highly complex involving holistic approaches to achieve land health and environmental quality. Plants can be used to address today’s environmental problems. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides conservation planning, program administration, and technology transfer to private landowners. Plant Material Centers (PMCs), together with a multitude of partners, develop plant materials and provide technology regarding their use. To date, there are 484 cultivars and natural germplasms of improved plants that have been released by PMCs. A large number of these releases have been successfully incorporated into the commercial seed and plant production industry. Over 114 …

Biomarkers Of Heavy Metal Effects In Two Species Of Caddisfly Larvae From Clark Fork River, Montana: Stress Proteins (Hsp70) And Lysosomal Membrane Integrity, I. Werner, K. Broeg, Daniel Cain, W. Wallace, Michelle Hornberger, D. E. Hinton, Samuel Luoma
Clark Fork Symposium Archives
Potential sublethal effects of heavy metals in stream macroinvertebrates were examined with two cellular and biochemical biomarkers in larvae of two caddisflies indigenous to the Clark Fork River, Montana, - Hydropsyche spp. and Arctopsyche grandis. Stress proteins, in particular members of the HSP70 family, are involved in cellular protein homeostasis and repair, and are induced by a variety of stressors, which either damage cellular proteins directly or cause cells to synthesize aberrant proteins. Lysosomes are intracellular organelles that play key roles in the detoxification of both organic and inorganic xenobiotic compounds. Larvae of Hydropsyche spp. were collected from …
Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman
Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman
Clark Fork Symposium Archives
A proposed method for the evaluation of macroinvertebrate bioassessment protocols is described in this study. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (Montana DEQ) uses a modification of US EPA’s Rapid Bioassessment Protocols for stream assessment and monitoring. These protocols use a battery of macroinvertebrate community descriptors, or metrics, as indicators of biotic health; the metrics are based upon tenets of ecological theory and field observations and remained largely untested for sensitivity to the effects of human activities.
To evaluate the metric battery in current use, 93 stream sites were sampled in the Montana Valley and Foothill Prairies ecoregion (which includes …
