Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young Sep 2005

Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Extreme environmental change during growth often results in an increase in developmental abnormalities in the morphology of an organism. The evolutionary significance of such stress-induced variation depends on the recurrence of a stressor and on the degree to which developmental errors can be accommodated by an organism's ontogeny without significant loss of function. We subjected populations of four species of soricid shrews to an extreme environment during growth and measured changes in the patterns of integration and accommodation of stress-induced developmental errors in a complex of mandibular traits. Adults that grew under an extreme environment had lower integration of morphological …

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann Sep 2005

Instrumented Techniques And Reflective Thinking In Analytic Geometry, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In a previous study that explored epistemological perspectives on solving problems with Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) we concluded that awareness of the special ways that the software utilizes symbols in algebraic manipulations and in implicit plotting should be encouraged (Zehavi, 2004). Such awareness is required for, and encouraged by treating geometry analytically with a symbolic-graphical system. In this paper we compare a traditional solution of a problem in analytic geometry with CAS-based solutions to the same problem. The discussion will focus on the role of reflective thinking, namely selection of techniques, monitoring of the solution process, insight, and conceptualization, play …

Human Activity Mediates A Trophic Cascade Caused By Wolves, Mark Hebblewhite, Clifford A. White, Clifford G. Nietvelt, John A. Mckenzie, Tomas E. Hurd, John M. Fryxell, Suzanne E. Bayley, Paul C. Paquet Aug 2005

Human Activity Mediates A Trophic Cascade Caused By Wolves, Mark Hebblewhite, Clifford A. White, Clifford G. Nietvelt, John A. Mckenzie, Tomas E. Hurd, John M. Fryxell, Suzanne E. Bayley, Paul C. Paquet

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Experimental evidence of trophic cascades initiated by large vertebrate predators is rare in terrestrial ecosystems. A serendipitous natural experiment provided an opportunity to test the trophic cascade hypothesis for wolves (Canis lupus) in Banff National Park, Canada. The first wolf pack recolonized the Bow Valley of Banff National Park in 1986. High human activity partially excluded wolves from one area of the Bow Valley (low-wolf area), whereas wolves made full use of an adjacent area (high-wolf area). We investigated the effects of differential wolf predation between these two areas on elk (Cervus elaphus) population density, adult …

Reproductive Success Of Chestnut-Collared Longspurs In Native And Exotic Grassland, J. D. Lloyd, Thomas E. Martin May 2005

Reproductive Success Of Chestnut-Collared Longspurs In Native And Exotic Grassland, J. D. Lloyd, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Habitat loss and fragmentation have been identified as important factors in the decline of grassland bird populations. However, population declines are apparent even in prairie ecosystems that remain relatively intact suggesting that additional factors are involved. The degradation of breeding habitat may be one such factor, but few studies have examined habitat-specific demography of grassland birds, and thus little is known of how changes in breeding habitat may be related to population declines. We addressed this question by comparing reproductive success of Chestnut-collared Longspurs (Calcarius ornatus) in patches of native prairie and in monocultures of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), a …

Considering Natural Vegetation Development Processes In Restoration Planning For Western Montana Ecosystems, Thomas Parker, Sarah Flynn Apr 2005

Considering Natural Vegetation Development Processes In Restoration Planning For Western Montana Ecosystems, Thomas Parker, Sarah Flynn

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Revegetation is often part of restoration projects that involve rivers, streams, roads, unstable slopes, mine reclamation, and re-naturalization of agricultural lands. Because vegetation can develop without human intervention, understanding how plant communities develop naturally in different settings can help determine which revegetation methods, if any, are best for a particular restoration project. Some processes are inseparable from plant community development, including alluvial bar development in some river channels, hydroperiod in wetlands, ice and beaver action along rivers, source/transport/deposition zonation in translational landslides, organic matter accumulation in soils, and salt or nutrient accumulation near roads and industrial areas. Considering different vegetation …

The Blackfoot Community Project: Partnerships For Valley-Wide Land Conservation, Caroline Byrd, Steven Kloetzel Apr 2005

The Blackfoot Community Project: Partnerships For Valley-Wide Land Conservation, Caroline Byrd, Steven Kloetzel

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Nature Conservancy in partnership with the Blackfoot Challenge is purchasing up to 88,000 acres of Plum Creek Timber Company lands in the Blackfoot River Valley. According to a plan developed through extensive community involvement, the lands will then be transferred to public land management agencies including the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, MT Fish Wildlife and Parks and Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (State lands). Other lands will be sold to private landowners with conservation easements. "The Blackfoot Community Project" is very ambitious in its scope and is one of the largest land deals ever …

Nitrate In The Waters Of The Clark Fork Basin--Special Focus On Butte's Summit Valley, John Lafave Apr 2005

Nitrate In The Waters Of The Clark Fork Basin--Special Focus On Butte's Summit Valley, John Lafave

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Summit Valley is a 60-square mile alluvium-filled intermontane basin located in southwest Montana. The valley is bounded on the south and east by the Continental Divide, is home to the city of Butte, and is drained by Blacktail and Silver-Bow Creeks. Alluvium, derived from the granitic rocks that frame the valley, and fractured bedrock along the valley margin yield sufficient water for domestic purposes.

Reconnaissance ground-water sampling in the Summit Valley revealed elevated nitrate concentrations (greater than 2.0 mg/L) in the alluvial and bedrock aquifers. A review of the valley’s recent and historic ground-water analyses shows that 64 percent …

Global Biomass Variation And Its Geodynamic Effects, 1982-1998, M. Rodell, B. F. Chao, A. Y. Au, John S. Kimball, K. C. Mcdonald Apr 2005

Global Biomass Variation And Its Geodynamic Effects, 1982-1998, M. Rodell, B. F. Chao, A. Y. Au, John S. Kimball, K. C. Mcdonald

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Redistribution of mass near Earth’s surface alters its rotation, gravity field, and geocenter location. Advanced techniques for measuring these geodetic variations now exist, but the ability to attribute the observed modes to individual Earth system processes has been hampered by a shortage of reliable global data on such processes, especially hydrospheric processes. To address one aspect of this deficiency, 17 yr of monthly, global maps of vegetation biomass were produced by applying field-based relationships to satellite-derived vegetation type and leaf area index. The seasonal variability of biomass was estimated to be as large as 5 kg m−2. Of …
