Deciphering The Origin, Evolution, And Physiological Function Of The Subtelomeric Arylalcohol Dehydrogenase Gene Family In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Dong Dong Yang, Gustavo M. De Billerbeck, Jin Jing Zhang, Frank Rosenzweig, Jean Marie Francois
Deciphering The Origin, Evolution, And Physiological Function Of The Subtelomeric Arylalcohol Dehydrogenase Gene Family In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Dong Dong Yang, Gustavo M. De Billerbeck, Jin Jing Zhang, Frank Rosenzweig, Jean Marie Francois
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Homology searches indicate that Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain BY4741 contains seven redundant genes that encode putative aryl-alcohol dehydrogenases (AAD). Yeast AAD genes are located in subtelomeric regions of different chromosomes, and their functional role(s) remain enigmatic. Here, we show that two of these genes, AAD4 and AAD14, encode functional enzymes that reduce aliphatic and aryl-aldehydes concomitant with the oxidation of cofactor NADPH, and that Aad4p and Aad14p exhibit different substrate preference patterns. Other yeast AAD genes are undergoing pseudogenization. The 5' sequence of AAD15 has been deleted from the genome. Repair of an AAD3 missense mutation at the catalytically essential Tyr73 …

Mathematics Education (Research) Liberated From Teaching And Learning: Towards (The Future Of) Doing Mathematics, Jean-Francois Maheux, Jerome Proulx
Mathematics Education (Research) Liberated From Teaching And Learning: Towards (The Future Of) Doing Mathematics, Jean-Francois Maheux, Jerome Proulx
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Now, what do you make of that? We want to discuss mathematics education, and research in mathematics education (we don’t really need to specify, hence the parenthesis). And we want to address teaching and learning (mathematics, but we skipped the parenthesis this time around because we used the word just before) in terms of not-being. You will notice, however, the provocative presence of “liberated”, a strong verb which alludes to the idea of freedom while acknowledging certain constraints: captivity, dependence, and even liability. Its selection was a bold choice. But having made such a suggestive statement (without actually saying things …

A Multifactorial Cytochrome P450 2d6 Genotype-Phenotype Prediction Model To Improve Precision Of Clinical Pharmacogenomic Tests, Rachel Dalton
A Multifactorial Cytochrome P450 2d6 Genotype-Phenotype Prediction Model To Improve Precision Of Clinical Pharmacogenomic Tests, Rachel Dalton
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
BACKGROUND: CYP2D6 is difficult to accurately genotype due to a large number of single nucleotide variants (SNVs), indels, and structural variation such as deletions, duplications, and CYP2D6/CYP2D7 hybrid genes. CYP2D6 targeted genotyping panels are of limited utility; clinically relevant variants that are not genotyped will be missed. Sequencing solves this problem but requires additional tools to address structural variation. The goal of our study was to determine the predictive power of Stargazer, a novel allele-calling program, which combines SNV/indel calls with structural variation identification.
METHODS: In a panel of 309 human livers, CYP2D6 diplotypes and activity scores were initially assigned …
The Psychological And Physiological Effect Of Performing The Primal Reflex Release Technique On Female, Division I Collegiate Athletes, Erika K. Vichcales
The Psychological And Physiological Effect Of Performing The Primal Reflex Release Technique On Female, Division I Collegiate Athletes, Erika K. Vichcales
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Anxiety is a cognitive, behavioral, and physiological reaction to stress, and athletes have an increased risk being in a high-stress environment. One of the effects of increased stress on the body is a condition known as central sensitization (CS) where the central nervous system amplifies sensory input across many organ systems causing a pain response in normally non-painful areas or hypersensitivity to stimuli. The Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT) is a manual-therapy approach for evaluating and relieving musculoskeletal pain in patients, and is meant to facilitate a “neural reboot” of a hyper-aroused nervous system. The purpose of this study is …
Finding Home After Fallout: The Future Of Fukushima's Forests, Katy N. Spence
Finding Home After Fallout: The Future Of Fukushima's Forests, Katy N. Spence
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This long-form journalistic piece is about radioactive forests in Yamakiya, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and how locals are dealing with it. Residents of Yamakiya were forced to evacuate their village in April 2011 following an explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
One Yamakiyan, Hidekatsu Ouchi, stepped into the role of community leader and is the focus of this story. He hopes Yamakiya can use the radiation, rather than condemning it. Ouchi’s devotion to his community is connected to the Japanese concept of furusato, which refers to an individual’s obligation and nostalgia for family, community and place. The story asserts …
Investigating The Thru-Hiking Experience: A Study On The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail, Taylor Rose Cole
Investigating The Thru-Hiking Experience: A Study On The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail, Taylor Rose Cole
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The phenomena of thru-hiking has been on a dramatic rise, spurring hikers to venture onto increasingly remote and challenging trails over extended periods of time. Despite the recent popularity of thru-hiking, the field remains relatively unstudied. In recreation, the expectations held beforehand have been linked to perceptions after an activity, but this has not been explored in thru-hiking. For example, there is little known on the challenges associated with thru-hiking and how these challenges are navigated. Additionally, the social experience associated with thru-hiking on and off the trail has not been studied. Further, research is lacking on immersive experiences such …
Confronting The Challenges Of Whale Avoidance By Large Vessels To Reduce Collision Risk: A Quantitative Approach, Jennifer E. Helm
Confronting The Challenges Of Whale Avoidance By Large Vessels To Reduce Collision Risk: A Quantitative Approach, Jennifer E. Helm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Disturbance of wildlife by human transportation infrastructure is ubiquitous. This type of human-wildlife conflict has the potential to negatively impact wildlife population growth rates, especially for at-risk species like large whales. While many whale populations are rebounding as a result of a moratorium on commercial whaling, increasing ship traffic constitutes a significant threat to whale conservation efforts in the form of ship-whale collisions (“ship strikes”). Ship strike avoidance is difficult because vessel operators can only see whales when they are breaking the surface of the water, or “available for detection,” and even then, they will only see them a fraction …
Breaking Chains Of Oppression: Popular Culture And The Plundering Of Blackness, Corina Sacajawea Ambrose
Breaking Chains Of Oppression: Popular Culture And The Plundering Of Blackness, Corina Sacajawea Ambrose
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis focuses on the ways in which white supremacy created mass incarceration, specifically mass incarceration of black individuals, and how this continues to perpetuate a racial caste system in the United States. First, I examine contemporary novelist Colson Whitehead‘s The Underground Railroad to provide a historical background of white supremacy and slavery. Then, I argue that pop culture is one area in which artists are focused on the abolition of the prison-industrial complex and ending mass incarceration. Finally, I focus on JAY-Z‘s music video “The Story of O.J.“ and Beyoncé‘s visual album Lemonade and her 2018 Coachella performance to …
Weed Control As A Collective Action Problem: Quantifying Group Effects On Individual Behavior, And Clarifying The Theoretical Frame, Alice Lubeck
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Weeds reduce the biodiversity and productivity of agricultural systems, and are a problem both around the world, and in Montana. Weeds are challenging to control because their effective dispersal mechanisms enable cross-boundary colonization, and so managers must engage diverse groups of private landowners. Researchers have recognized weed control is a collective action problem, but there is little research quantifying the role of collective factors on an individual’s decision to control. To fully understand the motivations behind independent weed control, I initiated a study to quantitatively assess different types of landowners and their weed control behaviors, the relationship between collective interest …
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …
Global Change And Whitebark Pine: Restoration, Refugia, And Alpine Treelines, Colin Taylor Maher
Global Change And Whitebark Pine: Restoration, Refugia, And Alpine Treelines, Colin Taylor Maher
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Whitebark pine is a major component of subalpine forests in western North America. The species occupies harsh high-mountain sites up to treeline, where it is often the dominant species. The species is ecologically important but is also a valuable species for studying the dynamics of alpine treelines. However, whitebark pine has experienced significant mortality in recent decades from mountain pine beetle outbreaks and white pine blister rust. This kind of rapid environmental change presents significant challenges to our understanding and management of the dynamics of ecological communities. On one hand, the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems could provide …
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The nuclear receptor PPARγ is a lipid-dependent transcription factor which regulates many pathways in lipid metabolism. Due to functions in adipogenesis, glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity it has been a target of type II diabetes mellitus therapeutics since the 1990s. Due to a poorly understood anti-inflammatory pathway it is also an emerging target in neurodegenerative disease. Despite extensive research the majority of the structural mechanism underlying the regulation of this proteins’ function is poorly understood. It is often thought that nuclear receptors function in a simple two-state model with defined on and off states. This model only considers one region …
Troubled Water: Building A Bridge To Clean Energy Through Small Hydropower Regulatory Reform, Samuel J. Panarella
Troubled Water: Building A Bridge To Clean Energy Through Small Hydropower Regulatory Reform, Samuel J. Panarella
Faculty Law Review Articles
This Article is presented in four Parts. Part II outlines the history of hydropower regulation in the U.S., including the environmental, geographic, and human effects of big dam hydropower development that ultimately engendered the onerous regulations currently governing all hydropower development. Building off of this history, Part III discusses America’s hydropower potential, the available methods for tapping it, and the possible environmental impacts of these methods. Part IV provides an overview of the current regulations governing small hydropower. Part V concludes by proposing areas where the regulatory framework for low-impact small hydropower should be reformed to properly and responsibly encourage …
Fantasy Versus Reality: A Twenty-First Century Film Series To Explore How The Absurdity Of Alternate Realities Affects The Individual In The Audience, Courtney Wunderwald
Fantasy Versus Reality: A Twenty-First Century Film Series To Explore How The Absurdity Of Alternate Realities Affects The Individual In The Audience, Courtney Wunderwald
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The purpose of this study was to understand how film viewers contextualize on-screen alternate realities with their personal perspectives, and if that is accurately represented by scholarly film critique. I then compared my findings with filmmaker interviews, which discuss their reasons for including specific imagery, symbols, and characters to evoke certain emotions or reactions from their audiences. My project aspired to offer a method that might redefine how viewers reflect on films and to open a discussion to gather data from audiences before assuming their reactions in film critique. I was always fascinated by the power of cinema, particularly how …
Camera Traps In Wildlife Research: Through My Lens, Bryson P. Allen
Camera Traps In Wildlife Research: Through My Lens, Bryson P. Allen
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Wildlife species can be difficult to study because they can have very large ranges and can be wary of observers. Researchers have been using camera traps in recent decades as a way to study wildlife behavior and population metrics. Here I explore the history of these tools in wildlife biology, their possible applications, and limitations.

Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Missouri are a socially and economically important game species generating annual revenue in excess of $1 billion. The last comprehensive deer study in Missouri was conducted in the 1980s – 1990s when deer populations were rapidly expanding. Since this time there has been a reduction in deer population size, declining growth rates, changes in harvest strategies, and the emergence and spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD). These changes have rendered prior survival estimates outdated, and the presence of CWD requires a deeper understanding of movement patterns and space use. We were interested in …
The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki
The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In the early 1960s, Ursula Le Guin wrote ‘The Masters’, a short novel that offers a sharp contrast to the ‘maths for all’ discourse of contemporary mathematics education reforms. Le Guin writes of a world – Edun – where ‘mathematical prohibition’ is law. Mathematical reason is banned for all people by the Priests of Edun, and failure to obey is punishable by death. Despite the threat of this totalitarian anti-math regime, some citizens create a collective heterotopia in which they practice mathematics in secret. Le Guin’s story is an opportunity to conduct a thought experiment: ‘what if maths became forbidden?’ …

“Statistics? Forget Those Old Ladies!!” Exploring The Nonsense Of Mathematics Education, Gustavo Bruno
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The objective of this chapter is to develop a reflection on mathematics education (ME) from a socio-political perspective, through the exploration of a parody of ME using episodes from a Mexican sitcom. Different vignettes from the sitcom, consisting of absurd, nonsensical dialogues and situations of a fictional mathematics classroom, will be described, analyzed and used as illustrations of socio-political issues previously explored in ME research (MER). These illustrations allow for a reflection on the public perception of ME as a social practice. Elements from Deleuze’s The Logic of Sense will be used to analyze the scenes. One of the conclusions …
Colonization Of And Adaptation To Tidal Marshes In The Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus Sandwichensis), Phred M. Benham
Colonization Of And Adaptation To Tidal Marshes In The Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus Sandwichensis), Phred M. Benham
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Intraspecific patterns of geographic variation reflect a dynamic history of colonization and divergence in response to spatially varying selective pressures. Analysis of this phenotypic variation has long stimulated biological thought, yet many outstanding questions remain regarding the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms driving patterns of geographic variation. In my dissertation, I collected data on demographic history, physiological traits contributing to salinity tolerance, and acclimation responses to different salinities to elucidate the mechanisms shaping colonization and adaptive divergence in tidal marsh populations of Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). Specifically, I addressed two main questions related to adaptive divergence in this species: (1) how …
Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker
Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Migratory and non-migratory ungulates often coexist in partially migratory populations, but the mechanisms that drive and maintain different migratory behaviors within the same herd are poorly understood. In western North America, increasing numbers of elk (Cervus canadensis) reside on low-elevation winter range year-round. These residents can cause issues associated with crop damage, potential for disease transmission to livestock, and reduced effectiveness of harvest management strategies. Because migrants transfer nutrients, alter carnivore distributions, and structure vegetative communities across seasonal ranges, reductions in migratory behavior raise ecological as well as management-related concerns. This work investigated the factors affecting migratory behavior …

A Cartographic Workflow Manual For Endangered Species Conservation, Martin P. Viereckl
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In response to global consumer demand for rare and exotic wildlife products, poaching of endangered species has become pervasive around the world (Eliason 1999). Despite the enactment of CITES, and other international efforts to protect vulnerable species from overexploitation, the global market for illegal wildlife products is estimated as high as $20-billion a year industry (Wyler 2008). Within important wildlife habitat sites, law enforcement struggle to curb rampant poaching that threatens the ultimate survival of many endangered species (Jachmann 2008; Rowcliffe 2004). Law-enforcement agencies responsible for protecting wildlife from poachers often lack geospatial tools that could greatly improve the effectiveness …
Blaming The Victim: Deconstructing María De Zayas's Feminism, Jennifer Zundel
Blaming The Victim: Deconstructing María De Zayas's Feminism, Jennifer Zundel
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1591 – 1661?) was the best-selling author of two extant collections of novellas, Novelas Amorosas y Ejemplares (Exemplary Tales of Love) (1637) and Desengaños Amorosos (The Disenchantments of Love) (1647). Both collections, consisting of stories of love, marriage, and gendered violence between aristocratic men and women, are explicitly and unapologetically pro-woman. Zayas condemns systemic misogyny and calls for institutional inclusion and protection of women, earning her place as an early modern feminist. Despite her depictions of violence against women and her denunciation of patriarchal institutions, Zayas does not advocate for a radical restructuring of society. …
