Diverse Conditions Support Near-Zero Growth In Yeast: Implications For The Study Of Cell Lifespan, Jordan Gulli, Emily Cook, Eugene Kroll, Adam Rosebrock, Amy Caudy, Frank Rosenzweig Sep 2019

Diverse Conditions Support Near-Zero Growth In Yeast: Implications For The Study Of Cell Lifespan, Jordan Gulli, Emily Cook, Eugene Kroll, Adam Rosebrock, Amy Caudy, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Baker’s yeast has a finite lifespan and ages in two ways: a mother cell can only divide so many times (its replicative lifespan), and a non-dividing cell can only live so long (its chronological lifespan). Wild and laboratory yeast strains exhibit natural variation for each type of lifespan, and the genetic basis for this variation has been generalized to other eukaryotes, including met-azoans. To date, yeast chronological lifespan has chiefly been studied in relation to the rate and mode of functional decline among non-dividing cells in nutrient-depleted batch culture. However, this culture method does not accurately capture two major classes …

Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Dha Diet Modification, Yoon Hee Cho Sep 2019

Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Dha Diet Modification, Yoon Hee Cho

University Grant Program Reports

Comprehensive studies of ENM toxicity and bioactivity remain challenging, despite their growing use for industrial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, mechanistic predictive models and data necessary to understand the factors contributing to their pathology are largely lacking. Epigenetic alterations are known to hold substantial potential as biomarkers for environmental exposures; this, in turn, may provide insight into mechanisms of environmentally related diseases and allow for a better understanding of disease etiology. The primary goal of this study is to determine epigenetic alterations associated with a DHA-supplemented diet and MWCNT exposure, and the relationship to decreased inflammation and development of lung disease.

From The Coils Of The Anaconda, Restriction Of Constitutional Amendment By Popular Initiative In Montana Association Of Counties V. State, Ryan Douglas

Montana Law Review

This note examines the ways in which Montana Association of Counties concerns Montana law, elections, and history. While it is now nearly futile to suggest any regulation of campaign speech based on the speaker's corporate identity, it is possible to limit the influence of outsiders on the political process and fundamental text of the state. Part II discusses the historical development of the statutory initiative and referendum regime that existed under the 1889 Constitution and tracks its transition to the constitutional amendment by popular initiative process that emerged as part of Montana's 1972 Constitution. Part III describes the factual background, …

'Race, Racism, And American Law ': A Seminar From The Indigenous, Black, And Immigrant Legal Perspectives, Monte Mills, Eduardo R.C. Capulong, Andrew King-Ries

Faculty Law Review Articles

The events of fall 2016 exploded the myth of a post-racial America that some believed had been ushered in by Barack Obama’s presidency.1With the U.S. presidential campaign in full swing, soon-to-be President Donald Trump disparaged Muslims as terrorists, Mexicans as rapists and murderers, and African Americans as poor.2 Trump’s racist demagoguery came amidst the momentum of the Black Lives Matter,Standing Rock, and Dreamer movements—mass mobilizations that sought to end the police killings of Black people, protect Native American treaty rights, and grant immigrant minors legal status.3 Once again, the racial divide that has defined this nation since its inception 2019] …

From Foundational Law To Limiting Principles In Federal Indian Law, Alexander T. Skibine May 2019

From Foundational Law To Limiting Principles In Federal Indian Law, Alexander T. Skibine

Montana Law Review

Federal Indian law has been "exceptional" in the sense of being distinctively compared to other areas of American Public Law. This Article analyzes areas of federal Indian Law where the application of exceptionalism and foundational principles is especially likely to motive the Supreme Court of the United States to search for limiting principles. The Article focuses on tribal sovereign immunity cases, tribal-state conflicts involving off-reservation treaty rights, and state taxing power within Indian reservations.

United States V. Gillette: A Tiny Prairie Casenote Opening A Window On The Enveloping Fog Obscuring The Indian Civil Rights Act Of 1968, Frank Pommersheim May 2019

United States V. Gillette: A Tiny Prairie Casenote Opening A Window On The Enveloping Fog Obscuring The Indian Civil Rights Act Of 1968, Frank Pommersheim

Montana Law Review

United States v. Gillette is one of the first reported cases on the new post-United States v. Bryant road. As of yet, there is no reliable (legal) GPS to point the way. This "tiny prairie" casenote is not meant to focus on the answers, but rather clarify the questions and to widen the discussion as the journey continues.

Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson May 2019

Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The theme of my portfolio is conservation education, using birds as an example of how to connect people of all ages to their natural environment. Birds were chosen as an example because of a personal curiosity for the animal, and because they are an accessible and tangible element of nature for all people, urban and rural. The first component is a Curriculum Development Guide created for the Wings Over Water program of the Montana Natural History Center. It synthesizes scientific research on Ospreys, relates central themes of the literature to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides inventive activity ideas …

Increasing Environmental Education Accessibility Through New Media, Farrah Masoumi May 2019

Increasing Environmental Education Accessibility Through New Media, Farrah Masoumi

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This portfolio shows projects that aim to create a larger outreach for environmental education through digital education content and expand already existing programs to enhance the learning and teaching experience. All of these components highlight the integration between environmental education and new media. By being based online, where many people spend their time, it can serve as a tool to get people outside. Audiences can learn more about the environment they are a part of and give them the power and knowledge to make changes to become more responsible global citizens in their day to day lives.
