Effect Of Weather On Flight Speed Of California Condors, Sky Mae Gennette Apr 2021

Effect Of Weather On Flight Speed Of California Condors, Sky Mae Gennette

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Birds respond to variable environmental conditions by modulating aspects of their movement. Soaring birds use updrafts associated with surface terrain (i.e., orographic updrafts) and differential heating of the surface (thermal updrafts) to subsidize their flight, and they respond to other meteorological factors such as wind speed and air pressure. I evaluated how environmental factors influence one aspect of flight performance, flight speed, of a large obligate-soaring species, the California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). Based on previous research, I expected that condors would fly faster in conditions conducive to formation of updrafts. I calculated flight speeds using GPS data collected …

The Bewitching Eye: Women As Basilisks In The Writing Of María De Zayas, Betta C. Lyon-Delsordo Apr 2021

The Bewitching Eye: Women As Basilisks In The Writing Of María De Zayas, Betta C. Lyon-Delsordo

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

A commonly referenced motif in Golden Age Spanish literature is the power of a woman’s gaze. For some, this female seductive power is something to be feared, and it is likened to the gaze of a basilisk, a monstrous serpent that can kill by locking eyes with its prey. One author who makes heavy use of this comparison is María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1590 - c. 1661), author of the Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and the Desengaños amorosos, two collections of short stories that bring to light the experiences of Spanish noblewomen in the 17th century. In the …

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean Apr 2021

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

All nouns, determiners, and many adjectives in the Spanish language are grammatically designated as either masculine or feminine, and the default is always the masculine form. For example, “the tall boy” in Spanish is “el chico alto”, “the tall girl” is “la chica alta”, and if there is a group of tall children the plural form is the masculine “los chicos altos” even if there are females in the group. This binary gender division and masculine default can cause harm, however, when used in reference to women and non-binary people. This paper explores the recent movement to include a third …

Rewilding Children: Creating Digital Tools For K-5 Wildlife Education, Ashley Sinclair, Jeffrey Hyer, Mitchell Reynolds, Megan Jackson, Makayla Haynes, Nicole Ballard, Katelyn Graybeal

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

As people are moving and expanding into more rural and unoccupied areas, the number of human-wildlife interactions have increased. Public attitudes toward wildlife are essential for the safety of both, as well as maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Lack of awareness and education surrounding wildlife results in relationships with wildlife becoming disconnected, dangerous, and harmful to both native wildlife species and people. We believe through proper education, these conflicts can be mitigated and prevented. With our literature review, we learned that starting education about wildlife at an early age is important. While some resources for teachers exist, they do not allow …

Limelight: An Investigation Into Performance, Noelle Huser Apr 2021

Limelight: An Investigation Into Performance, Noelle Huser

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The world's a stage and we are all its performers. We perform in the way we exist, in relationship to ourselves and others, both a byproduct and ingredient of conditioning and identity. Our gender identity, race, social status, all inform the way we behave in different settings. Our performance, whether we are conscious of it or not, is what makes us most animal and most human all at the same time.

“Limelight”is the choreographic work I will be presenting on, in which I will unpack the dance performance and the movement methodology used to create it. This lens that I …

A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega Apr 2021

A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The purpose of this project is to create a digital story book which engages in the cultural preservation and language revitalization of the Northern Cheyenne, the tribe in Eastern Montana where I am an enrolled member. In this presentation, I will describe the steps I took for this project. First, I gathered material from personal experience and analyzed it working with community members, elders, and linguist mentors. For this project, I selected the Northern Cheyenne cultural teaching: “Put a stick above the crib to ward off bad spirits and keep away bad dreams.” I built a story in English, surrounding …

Reference Models For Riparian Restoration After Dam Removal: The Case Of Rattlesnake Creek, Claire C. Shady Apr 2021

Reference Models For Riparian Restoration After Dam Removal: The Case Of Rattlesnake Creek, Claire C. Shady

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The use of reference models in ecological restoration is imperative to determining the degree of success in restoring a degraded ecosystem. A reference model represents what condition the project ecosystem would be in had degradation not occurred. Oftentimes restoration projects use a single reference site, or limited variables to guide their questions and project goals. When restoration projects are designed around limited reference sites or variables, they may fail to adequately capture ecosystem complexity. The use of a broad set of variables and reference sites allows a reference model to incorporate a wider range of spatial and temporal variability inherent …

Distant Early Warning In Alarm Responses In Chickadees And Nuthatches – Do Birds Use Their Avian Neighbors As Sentinels?, Graydon William Prosser Hidalgo Apr 2021

Distant Early Warning In Alarm Responses In Chickadees And Nuthatches – Do Birds Use Their Avian Neighbors As Sentinels?, Graydon William Prosser Hidalgo

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Chickadees and nuthatches are known for their ability to avoid predation through complex alarm calls and communication between species within a flock. Very little is known about their ability to listen to and understand alarm calls of other birds with whom they do not usually associate. My research explores the interspecific listening abilities of chickadees and nuthatches, and specifically if they use Townsend’s solitaires and downy woodpeckers as sentinel species. I conducted experimental call playback experiments at bird feeders in western Montana. I played three different acoustic stimuli on a speaker to mixed-species flocks composed mainly of various species of …

Using C. Elegans As A Model Organism To Study Genes Linked To Alzheimer’S, Ketch Jacobson Apr 2021

Using C. Elegans As A Model Organism To Study Genes Linked To Alzheimer’S, Ketch Jacobson

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of people the world over. This is a growing problem, especially in developed countries where people are living longer. Over time, more and more young people will be tasked with taking care of their elderly family members, who can no longer take care of themselves. The causes leading up to the disease are still poorly understood, but by looking at certain genes that are associated with Alzheimer’s, we can gain a better understanding of the disease and the pathways that lead to it. Luckily, humans share lots of their genes with other …

Intersectional Feminism And Diverse Perspectives In Contemporary Romance, Abigail L. Nordstrom Apr 2021

Intersectional Feminism And Diverse Perspectives In Contemporary Romance, Abigail L. Nordstrom

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The lack of intersectional feminism and diverse perspectives has long been a critique of the literary canon. While the Academy has shifted toward a more progressive course of literary study in recent decades, there are still some genres that are treated as undeserving of scholarly analysis in spite of their unique and diverse perspectives. The contemporary romance genre embodies the very intersectional feminism that the traditional literary canon lacks, yet it is still treated as unworthy of consideration. Contemporary romance novels such as The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert and The Bromance …

“On The Staff Of The Grand Canyon”: Assessing Manager And Stakeholder Perspectives On Sustainable Wilderness Visitor Use Management, William L. Rice, Oakes Spivey, Peter Newman, B. Derrick Taff

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Overall visitation to Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) grew 36%, and backcountry overnight visits increased 8% from 2010 to 2019. This research examines how park managers and other key stakeholders, such as park-partner staff, are managing increasing visitation levels. In total, 36 semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with park managers and other key stakeholders during the summer of 2019. This study aims to inform sustainable visitor use management at GRCA and other wildland protected areas by examining the social, physical, and managerial considerations described by respondents. Results demonstrate both immediate and long-term operational issues and constraints for park management stemming …
