The Power Of Reciprocity: How The Confederated Salish & Kootenai Water Compact Illuminates A Path Toward Natural Resources Reconciliation, Michelle Bryan
Faculty Law Review Articles
This article chronicles the negotiation and passage of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes Water Compact, ratified in 2020, which has created one of the most innovative water management regimes envisioned among sovereigns. The Compact’s journey toward ratification is extraordinary, as the parties over the span of three decades worked to overcome historically entrenched racism and political opposition to craft a model that would provide enough water for all peoples and the fishery. Compounding the challenge, the Flathead Reservation itself contains vast swaths of checkerboard land held by non-Indians and a major federal irrigation project that has permanently altered the …

High Potential Antimicrobial Hit-Rate Of A Natural Product Fragment Reassembly Library, Evelyn Schwartz
High Potential Antimicrobial Hit-Rate Of A Natural Product Fragment Reassembly Library, Evelyn Schwartz
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Introduction of new antibiotics into the market is important and urgent. Over the past decade there have been few novel antibiotics and cases of antimicrobial resistance infections is expected to increase. Most antibiotics have been developed with structure-based drug design of known target mechanisms, or from natural products. The limit of using natural products is that many are already diverse and complex in structure and have limited synthetic flexibility. Fragments of natural products are more synthetically pliable and can be linked together similar to amino acids in peptide synthesis. An in-slica library of natural product fragment reassembly (NPFR) would provide …

The Forgotten Epidemic: Identification Of Mtbc In The Neolithic Trypillia Of Verteba Cave, Ukraine, Tre Blohm
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Microorganisms have plagued humankind for millennia and frequently participate in an evolutionary arms race against their hosts. Diseases from various microorganisms have crippled entire countries or led to massive population declines in recent history. However, much is unknown about epidemiology in ancient times. My project will be the first comprehensive paleoepidemiological approach to understand disease across populations in Europe during the Neolithic era (7000-1700BC). The Neolithic was one of the most profound transformations in human history, both culturally and biologically. Massive migrations, formations of the earliest settlements in Europe, and introduction of agriculture and pastoralism led to new environments for …

Assessing The Vulnerability Of At-Risk Amphibians To Regional Climate Change, Ross K. Hinderer
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Title: Assessing the Vulnerability of At-Risk Amphibians to Regional Climate Change
Purpose: Climate change threatens the persistence of many species worldwide. However, the effects of climate change on a particular species or in a particular location vary based on many factors. Some amphibians may benefit from climate changes while others will not, so understanding the factors associated with higher risks of detrimental effects will allow decision-makers to focus on protecting particularly vulnerable species and populations. Unfortunately, many amphibian species are not well-studied so ecologists are missing key details about their habitat use or life cycle making typical methods …
Predicting Huckleberry Habitat Using Species Distribution Models, Rebekah Brassfield
Predicting Huckleberry Habitat Using Species Distribution Models, Rebekah Brassfield
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Geographic distribution of plants and animals is determined by a variety of overlapping habitat factors like soil type, elevation, or canopy cover. Understanding the complicated interactions between these factors and the impacts they have on species’ distributions is increasingly important in the face of changing environments and climates. Species distribution models (SDM) measure the importance of habitat variables in determining the spatial distribution of certain species. Because SDMs include a variety of habitat variables, they can be used to answer questions about habitat suitability, predict future distributions, and inform conservation efforts.
Huckleberries (Vaccinium spp.) are a common understory …

Preview — Denezpi V. United States (2022). Double Jeopardy In Indian Country, Paul A. Hutton Iii
Public Land & Resources Law Review
On February 22, the Supreme Court of the United States will decide the single issue of whether a Court of Indian Offenses constitutes a federal entity and, therefore, separate prosecutions in federal district court and a Court of Indian Offenses for the same act violates the Double Jeopardy Clause as prosecutions for the same offense.

Responding To Diversity With More Than Simple Lip-Service, Donna L. Miller
Responding To Diversity With More Than Simple Lip-Service, Donna L. Miller
The Montana English Journal
Using contentious topics like those addressed in Joe Limer’s poem “White Hollywood” as catalysts for sparking conversations on complex social issues has potential to raise social consciousness and to support collaborative conversation. Miller’s GREEN APPLE acronym guides teachers and learners in honoring diversity and nurturing social justice. In critical race theory fashion, GREEN APPLE questions enable students of all races and ethnicities to have informed, productive conversations about the forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, the society in which they live.

Thinking With Images And Words: Multimodal Possibilities For Reader Response Journals, Stephanie F. Reid, Lela Horst Baumann, Bobbi Rodriguez, Megan Sorg-Pignataro
The Montana English Journal
In this article, the authors discuss crafting multimodal responses to weekly readings in the university setting. The authors offer a brief description of reader response journals before using social semiotic perspectives on multimodality to justify expanding the reader response journal to include modes beyond written language. Three of the teacher candidates enrolled in the course share one of their multimodal responses and provide insight into their process of creating the response. They share the materials and tools used. The authors conclude this article by considering how educators might assess multimodal responses.
Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez
Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez
The Montana English Journal
A qualitative multimodal content analysis of popular manga examined how female and male character interactions represented gender roles. An analytical tool was developed using multimodal, semiotic, social semiotic, gender, and feminist theories to understand representations of males and females in this popular media. This study showed that traditional gender norms are still present in manga, but there are some that break stereotypes. Also, in using both textual and visual elements to interpret multimodal texts, understanding of character interactions were enhanced because the intermodal interactions created new meaning. Implications suggest positive outlooks for manga being used as an educational tool by …
