Using a data sample of 980 fb−1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider, we study the processes of Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0, Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0, and Ξc0→Σ+K∗− for the first time. The relative branching ratios to the normalization mode of Ξc0→Ξ−π+ are measured to beB(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.18±0.02(stat.)±0.01(syst.),B(Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.69±0.03(stat.)±0.03(syst.),B(Ξc0→Σ+K∗−)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.34±0.06(stat.)±0.02(syst.), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We obtainB(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0)=(3.3±0.3(stat.)±0.2(syst.)±1.0(ref.))×10−3,B(Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0)=(12.4±0.5(stat.)±0.5(syst.)±3.6(ref.))×10−3,B(Ξc0→Σ+K∗0)=(6.1±1.0(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±1.8(ref.))×10−3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+), respectively. The asymmetry parameters α(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0) and α(Ξc0→Σ+K∗−) are 0.15 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.04(syst.) and −0.52 ± 0.30(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.), respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical followed by systematic. Rap1a Regulates Cardiac Fibroblast Contraction Of 3d Diabetic Collagen Matrices By Increased Activation Of The Age/Rage Cascade, Stephanie D. Burr, James A. Stewart

Faculty and Student Publications

Cardiovascular disease is a common diabetic complication that can arise when cardiac fibroblasts transition into myofibroblasts. Myofibroblast transition can be induced by advanced glycated end products (AGEs) present in the extracellular matrix (ECM) activating RAGE (receptor for advanced glycated end products) to elicit intracellular signaling. The levels of AGEs are higher under diabetic conditions due to the hyperglycemic conditions present in diabetics. AGE/RAGE signaling has been shown to alter protein expression and ROS production in cardiac fibroblasts, resulting in changes in cellular function, such as migration and contraction. Recently, a small GTPase, Rap1a, has been identified to overlap the AGE/RAGE …

COVID-19 was declared an international public health emergency in January, and a pandemic in March of 2020. There are over 125 million confirmed COVID-19 cases that have caused over 27 million deaths worldwide as of March 2021. COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. SARS-CoV-2 presents a surface “spike” protein that binds to the ACE2 receptor to infect host cells. In addition to the respiratory tract, SARS-Cov-2 can also infect cells of the oral mucosa, which also express the ACE2 receptor. The spike and ACE2 proteins are highly glycosylated with sialic acid modifications that direct viral-host interactions and infection. Maackia …

We report the first measurement of the exclusive cross sections e+e− → BB¯ , e+e− → BB¯ ∗, and e+e− → B∗B¯ ∗ in the energy range from 10.63 GeV to 11.02 GeV. The B mesons are fully reconstructed in a large number of hadronic final states and the three channels are identified using a beam-constrained-mass variable. The shapes of the exclusive cross sections show oscillatory behavior with several maxima and minima. The results are obtained using data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

We report results from a study of the spin and parity of Ξc(2970)+ using a 980 fb-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The decay angle distributions in the chain Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+→Ξc+π-π+ are analyzed to determine the spin of this charmed-strange baryon. The angular distributions strongly favor the Ξc(2970)+ spin J=1/2 over 3/2 or 5/2, under an assumption that the lowest partial wave dominates in the decay. We also measure the ratio of Ξc(2970)+ decay branching fractions R=B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+]/B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc′0π+]=1.67±0.29(stat)-0.09+0.15(syst)±0.25(IS), where the last uncertainty is due to possible isospin-symmetry-breaking effects. This R value favors the spin-parity …

Linear Discriminant Analysis Based On Gas Chromatographic Measurements For Geographical Prediction Of Usa Medical Domestic Cannabis, Ramia Z. Al Bakain, Yahya S. Al-Degs, James V. Cizdziel, Mahmoud A. Elsohly

Faculty and Student Publications

Fifty four domestically produced cannabis samples obtained from different USA states were quantitatively assayed by GC-FID to detect 22 active components: 15 terpenoids and 7 cannabinoids. The profiles of the selected compounds were used as inputs for samples grouping to their geographical origins and for building a geographical prediction model using Linear Discriminant Analysis. The proposed sample extraction and chromatographic separation was satisfactory to select 22 active ingredients with a wide analytical range between 5.0 and 1,000 μg/mL. Analysis of GC-profiles by Principle Component Analysis retained three significant variables for grouping job (Δ9-THC, CBN, and CBC) and the modest discrimination …

This study examined rates of genetic testing in two cohorts of publicly insured individuals who have newly prescribed medication with FDA pharmacogenomic labeling guidance. Genetic testing was rare (4.4% and 10.5% in Medicaid and Medicare cohorts, respectively) despite the fact that all participants selected were taking medications that contained pharmacogenomic labeling information. When testing was conducted it was typically done before the initial use of a target medication. Factors that emerged as predictors of the likelihood of undergoing genetic testing included White ethnicity (vs. Black), female gender, and age. Cost analyses indicated higher expenditures in groups receiving genetic testing vs. …

Dendroarchaeology is under-represented in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of the United States (US), and at present, only three published studies have precision dated a collection of 18th–19th-century structures. In this study, we examined the tree-ring data from pine, poplar, and oak timbers used in the Walker House in Tupelo, Mississippi. The Walker House was constructed ca. the mid-1800s with timbers that appeared to be recycled from previous structures. In total, we examined 30 samples (16 pines, 8 oaks, and 6 poplars) from the attic and crawlspace. We cross-dated latewood ring growth from the attic pine samples to the period …

Using the entire data sample of 980 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, we present an amplitude analysis measuring the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-allowed, W-exchange resonant decay Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-) with a polarized φ and the nonresonant decay via a direct process Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-. We present these measurements, relative to the normalization mode Ξ-π+, and find branching ratios B(Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-))(BΞc0→Ξ-π+)=0.036±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.) and B(Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-)B(Ξc0→Ξ-π+)=0.039±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.), which suggest that only minor cusping peaks occur in the combinatorial background of ω∗-→Ξ0K- due to these Ξc0 decays.

We report measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for Ds+→K+η, Ds+→K+π0, and Ds+→π+η decays, and the branching fraction for Ds+→π+π0. Our results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 921 fb-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. Our measurements of CP asymmetries in these decays are the most precise to date; no evidence for CP violation is found.

The Effect Of Sampling Density And Study Area Size On Landscape Genetics Inferences For The Mississippi Slimy Salamander (Plethodon Mississippi), Stephanie M. Burgess, Ryan C. Garrick Jun 2021

The Effect Of Sampling Density And Study Area Size On Landscape Genetics Inferences For The Mississippi Slimy Salamander (Plethodon Mississippi), Stephanie M. Burgess, Ryan C. Garrick

Faculty and Student Publications

In landscape genetics, it is largely unknown how choices regarding sampling density and study area size impact inferences upon which habitat features impede vs. facilitate gene flow. While it is recommended that sampling locations be spaced no further apart than the average individual's dispersal distance, for low-mobility species, this could lead to a challenging number of sampling locations, or an unrepresentative study area. We assessed the effects of sampling density and study area size on landscape genetic inferences for a dispersal-limited amphibian, Plethodon mississippi, via analysis of nested datasets. Microsatellite-based genetic distances among individuals were divided into three datasets representing …

A Theoretical Study Of Synchronous Proton Transfer In (Hf)N, (H2O) N, And (Hcl) N Where N = 3, 4, 5, Johnny Yang

Honors Theses

For (HF)n, (H2O)n, and (HCl)n (n = 3 − 5), we have rigorously characterized the structures for the minima and transition states for synchronous proton transfer (SPT) with the CCSD(T) method and aug-cc-pVTZ basis set. The electronic barrier heights (∆E†) associated with these transition states have also been computed with the explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12 method and the aug-cc-pVQZ-F12 basis set (abbreviated aQZ-F12). (HCl)n (n = 3 − 5) SPT transition states have not been previously identified to the best of our knowledge, and they have been found …
