Presented at the Fourth Annual Meeting of the American Gear Manufacturers Association, Detroit, Mich., April, 1920. Adopted as recommended practice, April 29, 1921. The classification of accounts presented herewith is in sufficient detail to cover the gear manufacturing operations of practically all of the A. G. M. A. membership. If uniformity is to be obtained, it will be necessary that the main divisions be followed in all cases. The degree of refinement desired will govern the detail accounts; these may be sub-divided, consolidated or eliminated to meet the requirements of each individual company. Method Of Distributing Factory Payroll, Matthew Porosky

This article illustrates a method of distributing payroll in a plant which manufactures special electrical apparatus to a large extent, and also deals with a method of fully absorbing the payroll in the cost of the product. While a number of methods exist which may accomplish these results satisfactorily, the method used depends largely upon the character of the business and not simply upon the needs of accounting. The method selected must provide all the necessary checks required for the effective control of the payroll expenditures and the absorption of the payroll in costs.

Your Committee on Continuous Inventory of Fixed Capital was organized under the Accounting Section as outlined at the first monthly meeting of the Managing Committee “to canvass the industry, setting forth the advantages of maintaining a Continuous Inventory of Fixed Capital giving costs in detail, and to promulgate a standard routine, etc., for keeping such a record.� It is well perhaps to discuss at the start what is meant by a “Continuous Inventory of Fixed Capital� that we may all have in mind the same mental picture.
