Universal Aspects Of Barrier Crossing Under Bias, Sudeep Adhikari, Kevin S. D. Beach
Universal Aspects Of Barrier Crossing Under Bias, Sudeep Adhikari, Kevin S. D. Beach
Faculty and Student Publications
The thermal activation process by which a system passes from one local energy minimum to another is a recurring motif in physics, chemistry, and biology. For instance, biopolymer chains are typically modeled in terms of energy landscapes, with folded and unfolded conformations represented by two distinct wells separated by a barrier. The rate of transfer between wells depends primarily on the height of the barrier, but it also depends on the details of the shape of the landscape along the trajectory. We consider the case of bias due to an external force, analogous to the pulling force applied in optical …
A Generalization Of The Grunwald-Wang Theorem, Bhawesh Mishra
A Generalization Of The Grunwald-Wang Theorem, Bhawesh Mishra
Algebra/Number Theory Seminar
The Grunwald-Wang theorem for nth powers states that a rational number a is an nth power in ℚp for almost every prime p if and only if either a is a perfect nth power in rationals or 8 | n and a = 2^(n/2) b^n for some rational b. In this talk, we will present a generalization of a Grunwald-Wang theorem, from a single integer a to a subset A of rational numbers. More specifically, let q be the smallest prime dividing the natural number n ≥ 2. A finite subset A of rationals with cardinality ≥ q contains an …

Is Math Real? How Simple Questions Lead Us To Mathematics' Deepest Truths, Eugenia Cheng
Is Math Real? How Simple Questions Lead Us To Mathematics' Deepest Truths, Eugenia Cheng
Dalrymple Lecture Series
Where does math come from: from rules in a textbook? From logic and deduction? Not quite. In this talk Eugenia Cheng will argue that math comes from human curiosity - most importantly, from asking questions. Many people are discouraged from asking these questions in school, thinking they’re too simple to be taken seriously, or being told that their questions are stupid. But often, these simple-sounding questions lead to wondrous mathematical revelations. Dr Cheng will take us on a journey of discovery starting with questions like "Why does 2x3 = 3x2?" and "What's the point of maths?", leading us into research-level …

The Independent Bondage Number Of Planar Graphs With Degree Conditions And Girth Conditions, Kanchana Gamladdalage
The Independent Bondage Number Of Planar Graphs With Degree Conditions And Girth Conditions, Kanchana Gamladdalage
Combinatorics Seminar
For a finite graph G, a vertex set D of G is said to be a dominating set of G, if every vertex v ∈ V(G) − D has a neighbor in D. Further, if D is an independent set of vertices (D is an independent set if there is no edge between any two vertices of D) as well, we say D is an independent dominating set. Define γi(G) to be the minimum cardinality among all independent dominating sets of G. The bondage number of G denoted by b(G), is defined as min{|B| : B ⊂ E(G) such that …
Biomembrane-Based Memcapacitive Reservoir Computing System For Energy-Efficient Temporal Data Processing, Md Razuan Hossain, Ahmed S. Mohamed, Nicholas X. Armendarez, Joseph S. Najem, Md Sakib Hasan
Biomembrane-Based Memcapacitive Reservoir Computing System For Energy-Efficient Temporal Data Processing, Md Razuan Hossain, Ahmed S. Mohamed, Nicholas X. Armendarez, Joseph S. Najem, Md Sakib Hasan
Faculty and Student Publications
Reservoir computing is a highly efficient machine learning framework for processing temporal data by extracting input features and mapping them into higher dimensional spaces. Physical reservoirs have been realized using spintronic oscillators, atomic switch networks, volatile memristors, etc. However, these devices are intrinsically energy-dissipative due to their resistive nature, increasing their power consumption. Therefore, memcapacitive devices can provide a more energy-efficient approach. Herein, volatile biomembrane-based memcapacitors are leveraged as reservoirs to solve classification tasks and process time series in simulation and experimentally. This system achieves a 99.6% accuracy for spoken-digit classification and a normalized mean square error of 7.81×10−4$7.81 \times …

Ghosting From The Workplace: The Impact Of Feedback (Or Lack Thereof) On Applicants’ Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Natasha R. Wood, Christina Leckfor, Sydney Wicks, Andrew Hales
Ghosting From The Workplace: The Impact Of Feedback (Or Lack Thereof) On Applicants’ Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Natasha R. Wood, Christina Leckfor, Sydney Wicks, Andrew Hales
Faculty and Student Publications
Background: Applying for a job can be a stressful experience. When a potential employer chooses to not move forward with a candidate, they can either directly tell them or cease communication altogether—known as ghosting. Ghosting has harmful consequences, such as lower basic psychological needs satisfaction than direct rejection, and there has been an apparent increase in this phenomenon by potential employers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of being ghosted after submitting a hypothetical job application.
Methods: An international sample of unemployed people (N = 554) completed an online job application task and were randomly assigned …
