Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are a type of membrane-lipids commonly found in eukaryotes, as well as in bacteria from the order Sphingomonadales. In these bacteria, GSLs replace lipopolysaccharides as key structural and functional components of the outer membrane. These molecules play a crucial role in maintaining membrane integrity and helping bacteria adapt to environmental stresses. Additionally, they hold significant potential in biomedical research due to their ability to modulate the immune response through interactions with the CD1d receptor. In the first essay, we analyze how dark pool trading changes surrounding one of the largest corporate informational events, mergers and acquisitions. Alfarhoud, Bowe, and Zhang (2021) and Ye and Zhu (2020) suggest that the ability to hide trading is most valuable when the cost of information leakage is high. Since recent studies (e.g. Brolley, 2020; Ye and Zhu, 2020) find detrimental effects of dark pool trading on market quality, we expect that trading surrounding mergers and acquisitions will be opportunistic. Myxobacteria are prolific producers of specialized metabolites and key contributors to microbial interactions within soil and other environments, yet fundamental questions remain about the conservation of their biosynthetic capacities and the dynamics that shape their coexistence with neighboring microorganisms. This dissertation addresses these gaps through three integrated research directions. In Chapter 2 we utilized a pan-genome framework across eleven genera and 195 sequenced genomes,including ten newly reported isolates, and found five BGCs were identified as the conserved BGCs across the Myxococcota. The third-person accusative clitics in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) are virtually extinct in spoken language and informal writing, although formal texts and contexts still retain them. Speakers often mark third-person direct objects using the stigmatized full pronouns (syncretic with the nominative forms), null objects, or full noun phrases (NPs), also referred to as lexical NPs. The realization of these forms is not arbitrary; it is influenced by the semantic properties of the referents, particularly animacy (mainly humanness) and specificity. Animate referents [+animate] tend to be realized with overt pronouns, whereas inanimate [–animate] ones tend to be used with null objects. This …

This study examines how Arabic-speaking Jordanian male graduate students at an American university in Mississippi employ request directness strategies and modifications as polite devices in oral English, and how American native speakers perceive these requests. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory and the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project taxonomy (Blum-Kulka et al., 1989a, 1989b), this study employed a mixed-methods design to examine request production and perception. This study examined the effects of an intervention, which included a prewriting planning with a graphic organizer and individualized feedback on writing. To improve the writing skills of ninth-grade students (N=30), a quasi-experimental study was conducted with two groups of students. While both groups were instructed to complete a writing task based on reading texts and responding to a writing prompt, the intervention group was also instructed to complete a graphic organizer as a planning tool and was provided with both oral and written feedback. This study explores the use of audio sensory input, specifically, relaxation music, as a strategy to reduce off-task behavior in elementary students with autism within the general education classroom. The aim was to minimize distractions and teacher redirections, thereby promoting a more inclusive and productive learning environment for all students. Guided by the principles of improvement science, the research employed a single-case design with three elementary students diagnosed with autism. This thesis investigates how ideas of interregional migration were used in service of urban renewal agendas in Uptown Chicago from 1950 to 1972. It argues that The South and Appalachia as regional ideas were impactful in postwar midwestern urban development politics, even as regional identity was less powerful as an adhering force for actual migrants in comparison with factors of race and class. Chapter 1 examines the development and use of the urban enclave model of interregional migration by the Uptown Chicago Commission in the late 1950s. Background: Emerging evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) may improve kidney outcomes in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, direct head-to-head comparisons of their renal effectiveness with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i)—the recommended first-line therapy for older adults with T2DM and chronic kidney disease (CKD)—remain limited.

The comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is well documented and associated with elevated risk of aggression and suicidality among certain populations. However, no research to date has examined these associations among adolescents. Using data from the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A), the present study examined whether the presence of AUD was associated with greater outward aggression, suicidal ideation, and attempts, and whether these associations differed across race/ethnicity, in a weighted sample of 737,996 adolescents with PTSD (10.3% Hispanic, 16.4% Black, 73.3% White). This qualitative study examined how state-mandated standardized testing influences the job satisfaction of current and former third-grade reading teachers in Mississippi. Guided by Self-Determination Theory, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, and the Job Demands-Resources Model, the research explored how accountability pressures shape teachers’ motivation, emotional well-being, and instructional autonomy. Data were collected through an open-ended online survey of current and former Mississippi third-grade reading teachers. Analysis of responses revealed four central themes: emotional strain and burnout, loss of autonomy and creativity, impact on instructional practices, and student impact. Finding the placement of sensors is known as sensor localization, and is a necessary task to ensure that a network is capable of array processing operations, such as direction of arrival measurements. This thesis proposes a method to perform sensor localization for a wireless sensor network using acoustics. Each sensor is equipped with a microphone, speaker, and processor. Using these, the proposed system is able to find the distance between each sensor and later the geometry of the network. The purpose of this dissertation was to: 1) determine out-of-pocket cost trend and the impact of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provisions on the out-of-pocket costs among Medicare-enrolled chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients; 2) evaluate treatment patterns and comparative effectiveness of therapeutics classes for CLL treatment in adults; and 3) assess racial disparities and time to treatment initiation in survival outcomes among Medicare-enrolled beneficiaries with CLL.

Mycorrhizal fungi form mutualistic symbioses with most land plants, occurring primarily as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi or ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi. Pulsatilla patens, an herbaceous perennial widely distributed across Eurasia and North America, belongs to a plant family historically known only to form AM associations. However, recent discoveries of ECM P. patens individuals in northeastern Poland raise questions about the mycorrhizal status and evolutionary trajectory of this species. Because ECM formation in this lineage is likely evolutionarily recent, P. patens offers a valuable system for investigating the ecological and historical factors that facilitate the emergence of ECM symbiosis.

In this dissertation, we present work on the entanglement properties of the Fredkin spin chain, a spin one-half chain with local three-body interactions. We focus on the development and use of Monte Carlo techniques to measure the entanglement entropy for bipartitions of the Fredkin spin chain.

In the first chapter, we formally develop an extension to existing Monte Carlo techniques to allow for the calculation of higher-order Rényi entanglement entropies using the replica trick. The method clarifies how multiple systems can be simulated in parallel to calculate the Rényi entanglement entropy at any order.
