Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Angela Davis’s Are Prisons Obsolete? textually parallel one another in vital ways that mirror the lack of linear separation between the socalled historical past and modern conditions of racialized oppression, confinement, and brutal treatment. Through tandemly analyzing these texts, the modes of misogynoiristic control potently exacted on the enslaved/imprisoned Black woman’s body are clearly rendered across time. Ultra-processed foods now account for approximately half of the daily energy intake in high-income countries. Comparative genomics data suggest that vertebrates are descendants of ancestral polyploids and that historical polyploidization events fueled evolutionary innovations. For example, polyploidization can modify gene expression patterns and/or increase gene mutation rates to alter the phenotype. While considerable emphasis has been placed on the evolutionary impact of ancient polyploidization events, less is known regarding phenotypic modifications in extant polyploids. Coastal environments of the Gulf of Mexico host diverse and dynamic microbial communities essential for biogeochemical cycling, yet the fine-scale environmental drivers of microbial function and community structure in these systems remain underexplored. This study investigated the relationships between sand moisture content, microbial extracellular enzyme activity, and bacterial community composition along beach transects on Biloxi East Beach, Mississippi. Sand was sampled at five points along four transects spanning a gradient from submerged intertidal zones to dry upper beach sands. Mississippi ranks among the worst states in the United States for cardiovascular health, with high rates of heart disease, obesity, and hypertension. This thesis examines how race and gender influence heart health literacy and behavioral practices among University of Mississippi students. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study combines quantitative survey data from a stratified random sample of 1,000 students with qualitative interviews from a public health professional specializing in cardiovascular health and a student heavily involved with on-campus heart health programs. Mammalian Unc13 (Munc13) and Drosophila Unc13 (Dunc13) are presynaptic active zone proteins essential for synaptic vesicle docking and priming in a neuron. Alcohol binds to the C1 domain of Munc13, which inhibits DAG binding. The reduction in DAG binding by Munc13 decreases the probability of vesicle fusion with the membrane, decreasing neurotransmitter release. Heterozygotes for a Dunc13 loss-of-function allele are behaviorally resistant to alcohol, physiologically resistant to alcohol, molecularly resistant to alcohol, and self-administer significantly more alcohol than control flies. Therefore, genetically reducing Dunc13 mimics a state of alcohol tolerance in the fly. The two main Dunc13 isoforms, Dunc13A and …

In a pre-registered online study, we investigated the relationship between ostracism and overclaiming. Ostracism is the act of deliberately or unintentionally excluding and ignoring others. Overclaiming refers to the behavior of exaggerating one’s knowledge or familiarity with specific topics, often as a way of attempting to present oneself as more knowledgeable or competent than one actually is. Drawing from the temporal need-threat model, we hypothesized that ostracized individuals, as a compensatory response, would likely overclaim more compared to included individuals. This study investigates the cytotoxic effects of polyethylene glycol-polylactic acid (PEG-PLA) nanoparticles (NPs) both bare and coated with choline-based ionic liquids (ILs) on MCF10A human breast epithelial cells. The goal was to evaluate how IL-modified NPs influence cell viability at varying concentrations and to assess their potential as drug delivery systems. Three choline-based ILs, Choline-L-Asparagine 1:1, Choline-DL-Isoleucinate 1:1, and Choline-L-Leucinate 1:1, were used as surface coatings for PEG-PLA NPs. Additionally, the ILs were tested independently to establish a baseline for their cytotoxicity.
