"I Wanna Have My Own Damn Dairy Farm!”: Women Farmers, Legibility, And Femininities In Rural Wisconsin, U.S., Julie C. Keller
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The number of women farming in the United States continues to climb, even as the number of farms has been relatively stable in recent years. Nevertheless, women often face an uphill battle in asserting themselves as farmers, particularly if they are living and working in communities in which masculinities and femininities have been shaped over time by the gendered symbolic categories of farmer and farm wife. In light of the discursive power of the title of farmer this article examines women’s pathways into farming to ask: 1) To what extent do women encounter difficulties in being legible as farmers, and …

The life of Mississippi hill country bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-72) is the subject of a documentary film being made by Scott Barretta and Joe York. The idea for the film came about when the two discovered that the University of Mississippi owned a short film about McDowell called Bluesmaker, which was made in his longtime home of Como by Christian Garrison, who was a resident filmmaker for the university.

This study considers the factors that help increase the chances of black women continuing their studies at the University of Mississippi. Using a snowball method to contact participants and a video camera to record participants, findings showed that the black women who perceived their time at the University of Mississippi positively had previous contact with the University of Mississippi and clear academic goals within the university. Overall, the findings, while mostly consistent with the previous literature, point to areas that this research can delve deeper.

Student Insubordination, Discipline And Safety Initiatives In Urban Schools, Seunghee Han
Student Insubordination, Discipline And Safety Initiatives In Urban Schools, Seunghee Han
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
This study examines school factors associated with student insubordination in urban schools. Using data from 1,493 public schools (School Survey on Crime and Safety 2007-2008), multivariate regression analyses show that schools with more disadvantaged students (e.g., ethnic minority students, underachievers, and special education students) tend to have more insubordination incidents after controlling for violence incidents and school safety initiatives. Among school factors, perceived school value and parental involvement are consistently and negatively associated with both the actual number of incidents and principals’ perception of insubordination. Teacher training programs and student-oriented crime prevention programs are associated differently with each type of …

Pop Culture Pedagogy: Television And Film As Simulated Ethnographic Data, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper
Pop Culture Pedagogy: Television And Film As Simulated Ethnographic Data, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper
Southern Anthropologist
Anthropological theory often appears as the capstone course for undergraduate anthropology majors – the final barrier to the degree or perhaps even ‘becoming an anthropologist’. Despite its importance, however, this class is often underappreciated and its full potential left unrealized due to a lack of student engagement. The abstract language of original texts can be intimidating and difficult to apply to the complex realities of daily life. In addition, simply learning about theory does not prepare students to function as critical thinkers, much less future practitioners. This paper profiles a successful compromise: the use of popular television and film as …

Audiovisual Media As A Pedagogical Tool: A Brief Annotated Bibliography, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper, Max Stein
Southern Anthropologist
Media-based, pedagogical innovations are understudied and largely undocumented within anthropology and the social sciences more generally. While most instructors share the experience of showing films or employing YouTube clips as quick, contemporary examples, we rarely reflect critically on these techniques—much less publish our impressions. This bibliography mirrors the still tentative state of the literature and is neither exhaustive nor authoritative but intended instead as a starting point, profiling (1) examples of media-based pedagogy from the 1970s to the present, (2) critical assessments of the efficacy and impact of classroom media, (3) practical references outlining potential source material and relevant copyright …
