Horizons at the University of Mississippi is a key initiative in the McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement’s mission to fight poverty through education. Horizons is a six-week, full-day summer learning program that provides academics, enrichment, and recreation to students from the LOU community. Horizons offers a high quality learning experience outside of the traditional school year that supports academic achievement and healthy youth development. Children who begin Horizons after kindergarten are invited back every summer for at least nine years. This long-term commitment means that children in Horizons will accumulate learning gains, not learning losses.

The Prison to College Pipeline Program was founded in 2014 by Dr. Patrick E. Alexander and Dr. Otis W. Pickett. Through prior research and teaching experiences (in prison and at universities), they understood the profound role that student-centered prison education has played not only in reducing recidivism, but also in positively transforming isolated prison environments and the post-imprisonment outlooks and outcomes of imprisoned students.
