Weathering The Storm: Examining Mississippi’S Disaster Recovery For Diverse Economic Groups, Ethan C. Robertson
Weathering The Storm: Examining Mississippi’S Disaster Recovery For Diverse Economic Groups, Ethan C. Robertson
Honors Theses
This study investigates the systemic disparities in disaster recovery resource allocation in Mississippi, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by underprivileged communities. Guided by the central research question—how can we make disaster recovery more equitable?—this research critically examines whether current disaster recovery policy in Mississippi is equitable and how effectively it addresses the needs of diverse economic groups. The current disaster recovery model often fails to address the unique needs of socio-economically vulnerable populations, hindering their ability to recover effectively. Through case studies of Hurricane Katrina (2005), the Mississippi River Flooding (2011), and undeclared tornadoes in December 2022, …

Health Fairs: An Effective Approach To Health Promotion Through Community Engagement And Community-Campus Partnerships, Brookleigh Brumfield
Honors Theses
Community engagement seeks to achieve long-term outcomes through collaborating with community and campus partners to address the issues affecting the community by centering their voices, concerns, and solutions. This capstone project seeks to offer health and language access for residents in Lafayette, Pontotoc, and Union Counties, and to evaluate the health fair model from the perspective of participating community and campus partners. With this information from organizations, it will be possible to create the most efficient, beneficial health fairs in these counties. The community partner perspectives show the importance of community engagement, but also the significance for the campus as …
The Implementation Of Higher Education In The Prison System In Mississippi: The Challenges And Benefits, Elizabeth F. Ratliff
The Implementation Of Higher Education In The Prison System In Mississippi: The Challenges And Benefits, Elizabeth F. Ratliff
Honors Theses
Growing support for higher education in prison has sparked much conversation regarding the challenges and benefits of the programs and their implementation. In Mississippi, this has become an increasingly prevalent issue as the incarcerated population continues to grow and programs continue to be limited in accessibility. Mississippi’s incarcerated population deserves the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through higher education to better themselves individually and better their communities upon release. However, Mississippi faces unique challenges in its prison system, preventing the benefits of these programs from showing. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the challenges and …

Data-Driven Modeling Of Levee Failure: A State-Of-The-Art Approach For Integrating Artificial Intelligence Techniques With Hydraulic Erosion And Geotechnical Characterization, Haitham O. Saleh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Flooding is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the United States, often resulting in catastrophic damage to communities and infrastructure. The primary flood-protection structures, earthen dams and levees, are critical for mitigating these impacts. In Mississippi alone, there are over 2,800 dams and 3,750 miles of levees along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Of this, nearly 2,200 miles are along the mainstem Mississippi River, with the remaining levees situated along backwaters, tributaries, and floodways. Understanding the erosion behavior of these structures during overtopping events is essential for accurate failure prediction and risk assessment. This study focuses on …
Public Attitudes Toward The Nigerian Police: An Examination Of Trust Indicators At Micro Levels, Bassey Kooffreh
Public Attitudes Toward The Nigerian Police: An Examination Of Trust Indicators At Micro Levels, Bassey Kooffreh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation comprises three studies that collectively contribute to understanding public trust in the Nigerian police. The first study applies three major policing theories namely performance theory, procedural justice theory, and social capital theory to explain the factors that influence trust in the police. The second study offers a comparative analysis of the predictors of public trust in both the police and the courts. The third study examines how individual quality of life, neighborhood structural characteristics, and civic engagement affect public trust in the police. Using nationally representative data from Afrobarometer Round 9, the first study reveals that citizens who …

Beyond Guns Vs. Butter: Gendered Dynamics In Security Policy Preferences, Elaine Elizabeth Tagert
Beyond Guns Vs. Butter: Gendered Dynamics In Security Policy Preferences, Elaine Elizabeth Tagert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation challenges the foundational assumptions of the “guns versus butter” debate by recentering gender, insecurity, and state legitimacy in the analysis of public opinion. Drawing on over 300,000 individual responses across 80 countries, and original survey data from post-conflict Colombia, it demonstrates that the commonly held belief that women are more likely to prioritize welfare over security is both context-dependent and empirically unstable. Rather than reflecting innate preferences, gendered policy attitudes emerge from lived experiences of violence, inequality, and institutional trust.
The first empirical chapter reveals a striking reversal of conventional expectations in the Global South: in regions where …

Changes At The Heart: Adapting Eucharist In The Time Of Pandemic, Marjorie M. Snipes
Changes At The Heart: Adapting Eucharist In The Time Of Pandemic, Marjorie M. Snipes
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
During the initial COVID-19 pandemic period of 2020-2021, social institutions worldwide faced stress in adapting to immediate needs, among them places of worship which faced challenges from the disruption of social gatherings, religious services, tithing, and the celebration of key rituals. While many churches suspended or postponed rituals such as weddings, funerals, and baptisms, the practice of Eucharist presented a unique challenge. This ethnographic research focuses on mainline Christian churches in a semi-urban town in the state of Georgia (U.S.). It examines the ways that the experience of shutdown and social isolation affected the practice of Eucharist in Catholic, Baptist, …
Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver
Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver
Honors Theses
Across the United States, residents of towns and cities find themselves increasingly concerned with their water supply. In 2022, attention shifted to Jackson, Mississippi, as over 150,000 residents of the majority Black capital city were left without clean water. In this thesis, I discuss this case study as well as cases in Baltimore, Maryland, Flint, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey, finding that across these cities, there exist patterns of environmental racism and divestment in public resources. Crisis is soon to follow when these patterns compound with the climate change consequences of more intense weather and pollution. To discuss this pattern …
High Stakes: Analyzing The Legal And Law Enforcement Challenges Of Mississippi's Medical Marijuana Industry, Brighton Bensley
High Stakes: Analyzing The Legal And Law Enforcement Challenges Of Mississippi's Medical Marijuana Industry, Brighton Bensley
Honors Theses
Despite opposition from law enforcement and government officials, Mississippi citizens overwhelmingly voted in favor of establishing a medical marijuana program in 2020. The passing of Senate Bill 2095 (or the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act) marks a significant shift in the state’s drug policy and is a rare example of my home state at the forefront of an emerging industry. My thesis examines the effects of the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act by providing an overview of the challenges it creates for the state’s law enforcement agencies and legal community. By analyzing local news stories, public statements from officials, and studies from …
Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard
Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard
Honors Theses
Functional alcohol tolerance is an adaptation made by the nervous system to high doses of alcohol, and is seen by a significant reduction in sensitivity to this drug. This tolerance is a significant contributing factor in the progression to Alcohol Use Disorders. A major goal of alcohol research is to understand how alcohol induces this tolerance. Dunc13 is a presynaptic active zone protein essential in synaptic vesicle docking and priming. Alcohol binds to the C1 domain of Dunc13 at physiological concentrations, which inhibits Dunc13 from binding Diacylglycerol. This inhibition is predicted to reduce Dunc13 activity and presynaptic activity. Yet, genetically …
The Water Crises In Flint, Michigan And Jackson, Mississippi: A Comparative Analysis Of The Public Water System Failures, Grace Doody
Honors Theses
This undergraduate thesis aims to determine the societal, economic, and policy contributions of public water sector failures by comparatively analyzing the water crisis of Flint, Michigan and Jackson Mississippi. By examining the backgrounds of Flint and Jackson it is clear poverty, governmental neglect, and a lack of accountability influence the likelihood of a public water crisis. This thesis specifically compares Flint and Jackson’s demographics, the media’s response to each crisis, and the use of third-party administrators in the two water crises. The practical applications of these findings are for government agencies across all levels to actively work together to ensure …
Recidivism In Mississippi: Causes, Impacts, And Solutions, Grace E. Brian
Recidivism In Mississippi: Causes, Impacts, And Solutions, Grace E. Brian
Honors Theses
Because the United States is home to the largest prison population in the world, finding solutions to reduce the rate at which prisoners return to prison is paramount to helping reduce crime. Assessments of how Mississippi, the state with the highest incarceration rate, engages with access to prison education, barriers to employment, and youth incarceration compared to the national, Southern, and non-southern averages will be explored to direct recidivism reduction solutions. Results showed that Mississippi had a slightly higher recidivism rate than the national average, had fewer barriers to employment, and a lower youth incarceration rate than the national average …
Case Study Analysis: Exploring Johnson & Johnson's 1982 Tylenol Contamination Crisis And Ongoing Talcum Powder Crisis Through The Six Principles Of Crisis And Emergency Risk Communication, Caroline Tibbs
Honors Theses
In 2002, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a new field of communication, called Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC). With the creation of this new field, the CDC developed a streamlined CERC guidebook in order to provide a standard for the crisis communication strategies and responses of specifically healthcare organizations, but any organization can benefit from utilizing the CERC framework. The CDC also identified six key principles of CERC, which are as follows: response time (“be first”), accuracy (“be right”), credibility (“be credible”), having empathy (“express empathy”), promotion of actions (“promote actions”), and respectfulness (“show respect”). …
Infrasound From Tornadoes: Theory And Experiment, Bin Liang
Infrasound From Tornadoes: Theory And Experiment, Bin Liang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous field experiments support the claim that a tornado can radiate discernible infrasound between 0.5−10 Hz. The physical mechanisms of tornado sound generation are still not fully understood although several potential mechanisms have been proposed. In this dissertation, a new mechanism based on vortex sound theory is examined analytically and numerically. Basically, rotation of the non-axisymmetric vorticity field in tornadoes can produce dominant low-frequency infrasound less than 2.0 Hz. This finding is based on a detailed analysis of calculating infrasound emitted from two numerical models of tornadoes using large eddy simulation (LES), called the baseline model and the eddy injection …
Moderation In Online Incel Forums: A Comparison Of Warning Behaviors, Katherine Elizabeth Norris
Moderation In Online Incel Forums: A Comparison Of Warning Behaviors, Katherine Elizabeth Norris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Incels constitute an online community characterized by shared negative perspectives concerning masculinity, women, and societal norms. Platforms such as Twitter and Reddit have implemented content moderation measures aimed at curtailing the dissemination of incels' ideologies, which often promote violence and suicidal ideation. To observe the influence of content moderation on incel discourse, this study examined posts from two distinct incel forums: one subject to moderation and another without such restrictions. Employing thematic analysis, common themes within the posts were identified, and the occurrence of negative language was quantitatively assessed. Findings revealed that the moderated forum exhibited a higher prevalence of …
Privacy Within Autonomous Vehicle Cameras, Joshua Montgomery
Privacy Within Autonomous Vehicle Cameras, Joshua Montgomery
Honors Theses
In recent years, cameras have become ubiquitous in daily life, constantly surveilling, and taking in information. This leads to a potential security risk of the invasion in one’s privacy without their knowledge or any ability to prevent the privacy threat. While cameras alone are an issue, they are often only in locations where a user has some expectation of a loss of privacy, such as public locations with security systems. However, systems that rely on cameras to operate correctly, including autonomous vehicles, are becoming a more prominently used technology while often appearing in places where an average person has some …

Human Trafficking Research: Developing Collaborative Partnerships With Local Agencies, Jaymelee Kim
Human Trafficking Research: Developing Collaborative Partnerships With Local Agencies, Jaymelee Kim
Southern Anthropologist
This article considers an effort to develop meaningful research collaborations with non-governmental organizations and local agencies working on human trafficking. Scholarship discussing challenges and insights for “finding the field” and developing partnerships in the rural US is sparse. This research report briefly discusses considerations that should be taken into account when developing applied research projects with non-academic collaborators. Using Ohio-based human trafficking research as a case study, this piece discusses how cultural factors, misconceptions, confidentiality, and goals can be navigated to ultimately benefit the partner agencies and the populations they serve.

Tribal Statecraft And Freedom Of Expression In Jordan, Taylor Northcutt
Tribal Statecraft And Freedom Of Expression In Jordan, Taylor Northcutt
Honors Theses
In this research paper, I investigate the connection between the policies regarding freedom of speech and expression promulgated by the government of Jordan in the decade following the Arab Spring and Jordan’s tribal Bedouin heritage, with a focus on how traditional Bedouin values and attitudes regarding the nature and purpose of public spaces influence modern state policies regarding freedom of expression. In the investigation of this subject, I surveyed a diverse catalog of research covering politics and issues of freedom of expression in Jordan in the 2010s as well as the political and social values of tribal Arab culture in …
