Capturing Tradition: The Business, Branding, And Personal Identity Of Senior Portraits In The Modern South, Xenia R. Minton
Honors Theses
The rise of college students starting photography businesses, particularly in graduation portraits, has transformed the creative and entrepreneurial landscape in the South. This thesis explores the senior portrait culture at the University of Mississippi, analyzing its rapid growth through the perspectives of photographers and academic experts in Southern Studies. Grounded in eight years of experience as a photographer, this study examines the evolution of the industry, business strategies, and cultural significance. Through interviews with seasoned senior portrait photographers and Southern Studies professors, this research investigates how regional traditions, social media, and consumer expectations have shaped the profession. By analyzing these …

Trust At The Polls: Examining Perceptions Of Election Fairness And Voting Intentions, Amy L. Nyary
Trust At The Polls: Examining Perceptions Of Election Fairness And Voting Intentions, Amy L. Nyary
Honors Theses
Leading up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election, concerns about electoral fairness and integrity in democratic institutions became central to public discourse. This study examines how perceptions of election fairness and integrity mediate the relationship between political ideology and voting intentions. While prior research has demonstrated the influence of political ideology and trust in electoral processes on voter behavior (Birch, 2010; Stanziani et al., 2024; Schaffner & Streb, 2002), the mediating role of these perceptions remains underexplored. To address this gap, we collected online survey data from 524 participants, measuring political ideology, voting intentions, and perceptions of electoral fairness and …

Members of the Hom Lab are studying the potential benefits of water kefir consumption on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms and mental health through Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis modulation. Water kefir is a probiotic-rich beverage produced by the fermentation of sugar water using symbiotic aggregates of microbes known as water kefir grains (WKGs). WKGs consist of various yeast, lactic acid bacteria, and acetic bacteria bound together through extracellular polysaccharides. Probiotics are defined as foods or supplements that contain live, beneficial microbes that foster well-being …

Students For Sustainable Fashion & The Impact Of Fast Fashion, Anne M. York
Students For Sustainable Fashion & The Impact Of Fast Fashion, Anne M. York
Honors Theses
This thesis report took a project-based approach, making a change on campus through Students for Sustainable Fashion (SFSF), a club I founded here at the University of Mississippi. My thesis intends to document the establishment process and record the growth of SFSF throughout its last three semesters. SFSF emerged due to a significant challenge identified through casual class conversations, observational thinking, and campus engagement. However, university students are provided with abundant information about fast fashion's detrimental effects, and many feel unable to act due to social pressures, financial constraints, and the influence of fast-paced consumer culture. While students often desire …

Sweet Lies: Influence Of Food Marketing On Childrens’ Health And The Need For Reform, Mollie M. Warrington
Sweet Lies: Influence Of Food Marketing On Childrens’ Health And The Need For Reform, Mollie M. Warrington
Honors Theses
Markedly, there is heavy marketing of unhealthy food to children. This has become a significant public health concern because of escalating rates of child obesity, which have long-term consequences for physical health and severe mental health repercussions, such as body image concerns and low self-esteem. This thesis explores how food marketing strategies, historically rooted in television ads and evolving through digital platforms, are linked to children's dietary choices and broader public health implications. It analyzes various manipulative tactics, such as digital advertising, influencer endorsement, and gamification, showing how companies take advantage of the cognitive vulnerabilities of children to propagate unhealthy …

Contingent Enrollment Initiative At A Highly Selective Public University, Sean Dufault
Contingent Enrollment Initiative At A Highly Selective Public University, Sean Dufault
Journal of Academic Underperformance
When first-year students arrive on campus, they may face many challenges, such as insufficient academic preparation, conflicting obligations, social adjustment, and traversing the college landscape. This challenge is magnified for academically at-risk students leading higher education institutions to invest funds and retention efforts into student success programs. The current study was designed to investigate conditionally admitted at-risk first-year students at a highly selective public university (HSPU) concerning their perceptions of participating in the Jump Start program regarding their adjustment to the university, the program's requirements, and their sense of belonging to the university. The current study employed an inductive analysis …

Course Design: Motivation In The Age Of Ai, Emily Pitts Donahoe
Course Design: Motivation In The Age Of Ai, Emily Pitts Donahoe
Events
It can be difficult to motivate students to learn under normal circumstances—and even more difficult when outsourcing assignments to AI is easy, free, and virtually undetectable. In this course design workshop, we’ll investigate how the framework of self-determination theory can help us create more motivational learning environments. We’ll focus in particular on how to promote autonomy, competence, and relatedness in the classroom and how we might use these principles to craft course policies and assignments that discourage inappropriate use of AI. This event is open to the University of Mississippi community only.
Course Design: What Do You Want Your Students To Remember In 20 Years?, Josh Eyler
Course Design: What Do You Want Your Students To Remember In 20 Years?, Josh Eyler
Events
When we design courses, we are so deep in the weeds of learning outcomes and assignments that it can be difficult to look beyond our goals for the semester. In reality, though, most of our students will not major in our fields or pursue careers in our disciplines. What, then, do we want them to take away from our courses to benefit their lives after college? What do we want them to remember in 20 years? This workshop takes these questions as our framing for thinking about the structure and objectives for our courses. This event is open to the …
