See http://ivyspring.com/terms for full terms and conditions. The sigma 1 receptor (S1R) is widely expressed in the CNS and is mainly located on the endoplasmic reticulum. The S1R is involved in the regulation of many neurotransmission systems and, indirectly, in neurodegenerative diseases. The S1R may therefore represent an interesting neuronal biomarker in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's (PD) or Alzheimer's diseases (AD). Here we present the characterisation of the S1R-specific 18F-labelled tracer 18F-IAM6067 in two animal models and in human …

Acute Exercise On Memory Function: Open Vs. Closed Skilled Exercise, Justin Cantrelle, Grace Burnett, Paul D. Loprinzi Jan 2020

Acute Exercise On Memory Function: Open Vs. Closed Skilled Exercise, Justin Cantrelle, Grace Burnett, Paul D. Loprinzi

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 The Author(s). Background: Previous studies suggest that acute exercise may improve memory function. Few studies, however, have investigated the differential effect of the acute exercise movement patterns on memory. Such an effect is plausible, as research demonstrates that open-skilled exercise (e.g., racquetball) may have a greater effect on memory-related neurotrophins (e.g., brain-derived neurotrophic factors) when compared to closed-skilled exercise (e.g. treadmill exercise). A key distinction between open- and closed-skilled exercise is that open-skilled exercises are those that require an individual to react in a dynamic way to a changing, unpredictable environment. Our aim in this study was to …

© 2020, Department of General Linguistics, Stellenbosch University. All rights reserved. This article reports on research which examined whether the use of mobile phone text messaging is responsible for the reported presence of abbreviations in students’ written work at the University of Benin. I argue that the frequent use of short messaging service (SMS) abbreviations may not be attributed only to the reported increase in the use of abbreviations in the written work of students. Other factors, such as the purpose of the writing and the students’ state of mind, might also be determinants of whether students use abbreviations or …

Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy

Faculty and Student Publications

This study investigates whether L2 Mandarin learners can generalize experience with Mandarin tones to unfamiliar tones (i.e., Thai). Three language groups-L1 English/L2 Mandarin learners (n=18), L1 Mandarin speakers (n=30), L1 monolingual English speakers (n=23)-were tested on the perception of unfamiliar Thai tones on ABX tasks. L2 Mandarin learners and L1 Mandarin speakers perceived Thai tones more accurately than L1 English non-learners. Mandarin learners L1 speakers showed priming on Mandarin tones on a lexical decision task with repetition priming, suggesting L2 tones had been encoded within lexical representations of L2 Mandarin words. However, results must be interpreted cautiously, with an absence …

Social Distance, Stigma, And Help-Seeking: An Exploration Of Autism Beliefs In The Southern United States, Christian Shannon Courson Jan 2020

Social Distance, Stigma, And Help-Seeking: An Exploration Of Autism Beliefs In The Southern United States, Christian Shannon Courson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stigma has been associated with physical and mental health conditions and their treatment long before formal care systems. Negative perceptions within the lay community, such as stigma and social distancing, negatively impact individuals with autism and their families. The purpose of this study was to explore factors associated with autism stigma among laypeople in the Southern United States. Specifically, the study explored how demographics, knowledge, and familiarity are related to social distancing and stigma, and how these factors relate to beliefs about and intentions of help-seeking. Using a lay sample (N=108) of rural Southern towns, survey data was collected in …

Assessing Distance Perception In Virtual And Augmented Realities With Electroencephalography, Ethan Luckett Jan 2020

Assessing Distance Perception In Virtual And Augmented Realities With Electroencephalography, Ethan Luckett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comfinding in spatial perception research is that subjects tend to underestimate distances in virtual reality compared to the real world. The degree and methods of measurement of underestimation vary between studies, but the trend of underestimation is consistent. This study uses electroencephalography as a neuroimaging technique to examine patterns of brain activity when fixating objects in near space and far space in the real world, in virtual reality, and in augmented reality. For the augmented reality condition, a custom optical see-through augmented reality head-mounted display (HMD) was built and calibrated. A calibration method was developed to correct the geometric …

Hayek And Natural Law: Grounding Social Institutions In Human Action And Morals, Ethan Davis Jan 2020

Hayek And Natural Law: Grounding Social Institutions In Human Action And Morals, Ethan Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Friederich Hayek’s The Constitution of Liberty provides us with a theory of freedom, one that seeks to minimize coercion in the name of progress. The concept of progress is the grounding for Hayek’s entire theory. It ultimately provides the value of both liberty and those things which derive their value by preserving, promoting, and constituting liberty, such as rights and laws more generally. The problem is that progress is an ill-defined concept because Hayek’s descriptions of it are so vague that it cannot provide any satisfying explanation of why progress itself is desirable and, consequently, why we should promote liberty …

Do These Violent Delights Have Violent Ends? Social Norms, Alcohol, & Sexual Cyberbullying, Anandi C. Ehman Jan 2020

Do These Violent Delights Have Violent Ends? Social Norms, Alcohol, & Sexual Cyberbullying, Anandi C. Ehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexually aggressive behavior is well-documented among college students. However, little is known about the role technology may play in facilitating this behavior. Given that social norms have been established as a useful framework for understanding problematic and risky behavior in college students, the current authors sought to determine whether this theory might also provide insight into the use of technology to facilitate sexually aggressive behavior. Thus, this work sought to determine whether sexually aggressive behavior which occurs through the use of technology and social media, henceforth known as sexual cyberbullying, mediated the relationship between perceived social norms of sexually aggressive …

Understanding Social Anxiety Symptoms Through Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Strategies, Megan Perry Jan 2020

Understanding Social Anxiety Symptoms Through Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Strategies, Megan Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent and chronic psychological disorders among college students. Previous literature has shown that emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are relevant to the maintenance and aggravation of SAD. Within SAD, ER research has exclusively explored intrapersonal (within person) ER difficulties. However, interpersonal (between two or more people) ER difficulties have not been explored as a potential factor contributing to the intensity of social anxiety symptoms. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to examine the use of interpersonal ER strategies in SAD symptoms among college students. In the current study, students in …

Service-Learning, Comcore, And The Secondary English Classroom: A Mixed Methods Study, Kimual Snow Jan 2020

Service-Learning, Comcore, And The Secondary English Classroom: A Mixed Methods Study, Kimual Snow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT The prevalence of high-stakes, standardized testing, along with the emergence of the ComCore State Standards has decreased teachers’ capacity to establish and implement authentic learning opportunities for students in 21st century secondary English classroom. In a progressive literacy environment, teachers must commit to real-world learning that allows students to navigate complex informational texts without sacrificing high curriculum standards. A number of qualitative studies reveal how service-learning has been used in various classrooms to address deficiencies in student motivation and engagement, which in turn, sought to increase students’ academic outcomes. However, few provide the quantitative evidence that administrators want to …

Simulation Of Virtual Reality Display Characteristics: A Method For The Evaluation Of Motion Perception, Jonathan Emmanuel Hopper Jan 2020

Simulation Of Virtual Reality Display Characteristics: A Method For The Evaluation Of Motion Perception, Jonathan Emmanuel Hopper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual perception in virtual reality devices is a widely researched topic. Many newer experiments compare their results to those of older studies that may have used equipment which is now outdated, which can cause perceptual differences. These differences in hardware can be simulated to a degree in software, provided the capabilities of the current hardware meet or exceed those of the older hardware. I present the HMD Simulation Framework, a software package for the Unity3D engine that allows for quick modification of many commonly researched HMD characteristics through the Inspector GUI built into Unity. I also describe a human subjects …

This case study uses qualitative interviews with administrators, advisers, former editors, and others, along with researcher observations and more than 50 years of archival documents to construct a comprehensive portrait of the history, successes, and challenges of the student newspaper program at Oxford High School, and how administrative decision making has affected that success and vice versa. The OHS student newspaper, called the Charger since the late 1980s, has consistently ranked at or near the top of the best high school newspapers in Mississippi and has at times been named one of the top high school newspapers in the nation. …

Awareness Of Peace Journalism Among Bangladeshi And Ethiopian Journalists, Sima Rani Bhowmik Jan 2020

Awareness Of Peace Journalism Among Bangladeshi And Ethiopian Journalists, Sima Rani Bhowmik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

News is a vital element to keep people informed. Though the orientation of the stories is often debated over whether it is based on facts or lies. In a polarized society, it may not be the event that contributes to violence, but how the event is reported. Here is where the role of peace journalism comes in where reporters or news managers can shed light on structural and cultural causes of violence. It is in this context that this study attempted to investigate the level of awareness of peace journalism among Bangladeshi and Ethiopian journalists. To this end, the researcher …

Narrative Identity In Online Spaces: Selves In 280 Characters Or Less, Adam Louis Paul Jan 2020

Narrative Identity In Online Spaces: Selves In 280 Characters Or Less, Adam Louis Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The internet age has alloindividuals a degree of self-expression that is more expansive than any other period in history. Through the emergence of social networking sites (henceforth SNS), individuals can tell their stories to their entire social network with unparalleled ease. It is difficult to overstate how far-reaching the implications of this form of widespread communication are with respect to interpersonal communication. Despite this, little work has been done considering how we should think about self-presentation on SNS. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (1) I will defend the position that our narrative identities are constituted by a set …

A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson Jan 2020

A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis connects late nineteenth-century southern Democrat and former Confederate L.Q.C. Lamar to the status politics of the Northeastern “small imperialist elite.” Moreover, this work traces Senator, Secretary of the Interior, and Associate Justice Lamar’s legacies in American political thought, such as a regional memorialization and the example of his national influence through the policies of President Theodore Roosevelt specifically. Though he inspired generations of politicians with varying views, Lamar himself maintained a strict constructionist political philosophy and worked for home rule throughout his career. Scholars argue for Lamar as a moderate symbol of national reconciliation due to his eulogy …

Learning Lineage And The Problem Of Authenticity In Ozark Folk Music, Kevin Lyle Tharp Jan 2020

Learning Lineage And The Problem Of Authenticity In Ozark Folk Music, Kevin Lyle Tharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT Thorough examination of the existing research and the content of ballad and folk song collections reveals a lack of information regarding the methods by which folk musicians learn the music they perform. The centuries-old practice of folk song and ballad performance is well-documented. Many Child ballads and other folk songs have been passed down through the generations. Oral tradition is the principal method of transmission in Ozark folk music. The variants this method produces are considered evidence of authenticity. Although alteration is a distinguishing characteristic of songs passed down in the oral tradition, many ballad variants have persisted in …

How Newspapers' Social Media Editors In Bangladesh Use Official Social Media Accounts, Ahmed Shatil Alam Jan 2020

How Newspapers' Social Media Editors In Bangladesh Use Official Social Media Accounts, Ahmed Shatil Alam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the last several years, the newspaper industry in Bangladesh has been using social media for disseminating news and connecting with readers. But the question remains how the social media journalists are using these social media accounts and what roles they perform every day in the newsrooms. This exploratory study sheds light on both issues through the lens of the Gatekeeping Theory. Following interviews with 13 social media journalists who worked for 11 national newspapers in Bangladesh, the study found that the overall traditional gatekeeping roles of these journalists had undergone substantial changes as they were heavily concerned about audience …

Beautiful And Terrible In The Face: Reconfiguring The Southern Beauty Myth Through The Short Fiction And Autobiographical Writings Of Eudora Welty, Katherine Elizabeth Howell Jan 2020

Beautiful And Terrible In The Face: Reconfiguring The Southern Beauty Myth Through The Short Fiction And Autobiographical Writings Of Eudora Welty, Katherine Elizabeth Howell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From her personal appearance as the “ugly duckling” of southern literature, to her narrative preoccupations as a writer of grotesques, Eudora Welty has been critically separated from the realm of southern beauty and femininity. Drawing textual evidence from Welty’s strategic invocation of beauty acts and products in her short fiction and autobiographical writings, this thesis insists upon Welty’s lifelong stake in beauty culture, as it is practiced by southern women across the socioeconomic spectrum. Across her body of short fiction—a substantial portion of which was first published in women’s fashion magazines—Welty details the ways in which beauty, as expressed through …

Integrated Psychological Services In Pediatric Primary Care: A Program Evaluation, Kristen Laprade Johnson Jan 2020

Integrated Psychological Services In Pediatric Primary Care: A Program Evaluation, Kristen Laprade Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many children and youth experience emotional and/or behavioral health difficulties and lack appropriate access to care. Access to care limitations are particularly relevant to rural populations such as Mississippi. Integrated care models could serve as an innovative solution to increasing access to care for children and youth. In particular, the Three World View model of integrated care asserts that attention should be given to the clinical world (i.e., provision of evidence based services), operational world (i.e., charting, scheduling, referrals, etc.), and the financial world (i.e., funding and reimbursement). The current study utilized program evaluation tools to develop and evaluate a …

Post-Soul Speculation: An Exploration Of Afro-Southern Speculative Fiction, Hilary Word Jan 2020

Post-Soul Speculation: An Exploration Of Afro-Southern Speculative Fiction, Hilary Word

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of female authored, post-soul, Afro-Southern speculative fiction. The specific texts being examined are My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due, Stigmata by Phyllis Alesia Perry, and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. Through exploration of these texts, I posit two large arguments. First, I posit that this thesis as a collective work illustrates how women-authored Afro-Southern speculative fiction based in the post-soul era embodies and champions womanist politics and praxis critical for liberation through speculative elements. Second, I assert that this thesis is demonstrative of how this particular type of fiction showcases the importance …
