Non-Specific Stress Indicators And Growth Efficiency In The Archaic And Mississippian At The Perry Site (1 Lu25) In Northwestern Alabama, Robin Wiebe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Porotic hyperostosis, linear enamel hypoplasias and adult stature are all nonspecific indicators of stress. When studied together, they provide an understanding of the long-term survival of periods of stress occurring in varying stages of the life of an individual. Because the Perry Site contains both Archaic and Mississippian components, it provides a unique opportunity to examine not only how these indicators interact, but also how interactions may change across time and subsistence base. Most studies show increases in frequency of porotic hyperostosis and linear enamel hypoplasias and a decrease in adult stature with a shift to agriculture. The Perry material …

Socioeconomic Perspectives On Infant Mortality In Alabama, James O. Bukenya
Socioeconomic Perspectives On Infant Mortality In Alabama, James O. Bukenya
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Socioeconomic and demographic variables are examined in a maximum likelihood spatial lag framework to determine conditions influencing infant survival in Alabama using county-level data. The analysis is motivated by the basic premise that economic development and unidimensional health interventions such as immunization programs are not enough to ensure constant mortality decline in low-income regions. The results suggest that differences in socioeconomic factors can explain a large portion of the variation in child mortality rates among counties and across races in Alabama. The results also concur with prior conclusions that maternal and infant health remains an important reflection of the social …

Food Service Institute Teaches Healthy, 'Fun' Cuisine For Kids, Jennifer Southall
University of Mississippi News
OXFORD, Miss. - Statistics on obesity suggest that eating plenty of foods rich in vitamins and minerals while limiting those full of fat and empty calories is a hard sell for adults. It's perhaps an even harder sell for children: supermarkets don't put all that processed sugary goodness at a 9-year-old's eye level just for the heck of it.

Comparative Population Dynamics Of Freshwater Dinoflagellates Of The Genera Peridinium And Peridiniopsis, Andy Canion
Comparative Population Dynamics Of Freshwater Dinoflagellates Of The Genera Peridinium And Peridiniopsis, Andy Canion
Honors Theses
Freshwater dinoflagellates, like their marine relatives, have the potential to reach large population sizes known as blooms. Though they are not toxic like some marine forms, freshwater blooms may have a large impact in their respective ecosystem. This study investigated the temporal and spatial changes in population density of four Peridinium species (P. deflandrei, P. volzii, P. wisconsinense, and P. limbatum) and one Peridiniopsis species (Peridiniopsis polonicium) in Boondoggle Lake, a shallow lake (4.5 m) in northern Mississippi (Lafayette Co.). On each sampling date, measurements of the abiotic environment were made, including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity. Also, water …
Ignorance And Want In The Works Of Charles Dickens, Emily Katherine Ferris
Ignorance And Want In The Works Of Charles Dickens, Emily Katherine Ferris
Honors Theses
The process of writing this thesis to complete my requirements for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College began with a Directed Reading of five novels by Charles Dickens-Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, Bleak House, Hard Times, and A Christmas Carol. My intent was to investigate poverty present in the Victorian Era of England through these works of Charles Dickens. Upon further investigation, I focused my intent on questioning the social injustice attacked in each novel and the subsequent power that Dickens uses to fight this injustice. To begin with, Oliver Twist instituted a harsh indictment on the workhouse system. Yet, the …

The Use Of Dna Microarrays To Compare The Gene Expression Profiles Of Paclitaxel And Acetic Acid 2,2'-Thiobis, Bis [[(2-Hydroxyphynyl) Methylene]Hydrazid] In A549 Cells: Part 1, Jennifer Diane Ellzey
Honors Theses
There are several classes of anticancer drugs, including the antimicrotubule drugs, which halt mitosis by interfering with the activity of microtubules, the cylindrical protein polymers that play a role in segregating chromosomes during mitosis. While most antimicrotubule drugs act by destabilizing the microtubule polymer and reducing microtubule assembly, paclitaxel, a drug first isolated from the bark of Taxus brevefolia, halts mitosis by stabilizing microtubules, thus interfering with the dynamics of polymerization and depolymerization that are crucial to their function. In light of the mounting resistance to paclitaxel, it is more important than ever to discover new drugs with a similar …

Child Nutrition Archives Established At Nfsmi, Jennifer Southall
University of Mississippi News
OXFORD, Miss. - To anyone who ever pushed a tray through a school lunch line, the process didn't look all that complicated: make the food, serve it up. But in reality, each decision on what, how much and when to serve was most likely the result of a great deal of research, planning and even legislation.
