Hidden In A Handbag, Emmaline Landes
Hidden In A Handbag, Emmaline Landes
Honors Theses
The Hidden in a Handbag exhibition is comprised of a series of three medium size paintings using a heightened color palette. The painting style used for the artwork draws on elements of Photorealism as pioneered by Aubrey Flack. My work focuses on the personal act of revealing the contents of a woman’s spilled purse. By requesting that friends and family share the spilled contents of their purses without alteration, as well as the contents of my own purse, I capture a raw and private glimpse into these women’s daily lives. These paintings are rendered in larger-than-life detail, so that these …

Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously …

Ancient Rome And Modern Russia: A Comparative Analysis Of Propaganda And Statecraft During Times Of Conflict, Sydney Lynch
Ancient Rome And Modern Russia: A Comparative Analysis Of Propaganda And Statecraft During Times Of Conflict, Sydney Lynch

The careful study of trends in propaganda can provide dramatic insights into the political climate of a particular nation. Specifically, shifts in either the narrative or dissemination of propaganda during times of great conflict or domestic turmoil illuminate to outside audiences where the government feels there are possible weaknesses that could fracture and eventually destroy the security and legitimacy of their regime. Therefore, this paper investigates the Kremlin’s recent methods of propaganda and disinformation compared to those of Imperial Rome, allowing for a closer examination of these techniques. Overall, the comparative analysis of Imperial Roman and current Russian propaganda and …
