Separate And Unequal: The Causes And Effects Of Economic Inequality In Our Communities, And What We Must Do About It, Jonathan Payne Apr 2020

Separate And Unequal: The Causes And Effects Of Economic Inequality In Our Communities, And What We Must Do About It, Jonathan Payne

Honors Theses

This project seeks to create a deep understanding of some of the key causes and effects of economic inequality. In it, I review a wide variety of research and reporting on inequality as well as interview people that have been impacted by inequality in my community, Oxford, Mississippi. This information, as a whole, is not meant to create a complete, comprehensive understanding of income and wealth inequality, which would be impossible. Instead, it is a meditation on the origins, cycles, outcomes and ethical implications of the phenomenon. In it, I contend that the vast majority of negative outcomes of inequality, …

Trust And Discourse: A Case Of Land-Use Conflict In Alachua County, Florida, Anne Saville, Alison Adams Apr 2020

Trust And Discourse: A Case Of Land-Use Conflict In Alachua County, Florida, Anne Saville, Alison Adams

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Research on natural resources controversies such as land-use conversions has highlighted how stakeholder groups can have significantly different interpretations of the issue. Differing or opposing social values, political interests, and economic concerns play a large part in shaping how groups of people perceive a conflict. In these instances, opposing sides often use discursive frames to communicate their interests and garner support. While previous research has illustrated how frames are deployed in these cases, less is known about the role of trust in the context of frame resonance, especially when the frame deployer is a large corporation. We use the case …

Coronavirus Is Spreading Through Rural South’S High-Risk Population – Reopening Economies Will Make It Worse, Anne M. Cafer, Meagen Rosenthal

CREW News Archive

Despite the population’s vulnerability, Southern states have been a stronghold of resistance to federal and international recommendations around COVID-19 protective measures. Most of the states’ delays and refusals to enact “shelter-at-home” policies were tied to economic arguments. As University of Mississippi sociologists who work with rural communities on a range of resilience issues, especially health, we are concerned about the economic and health consequences of returning to business before the region is prepared to protect its residents.

Health Risks For Covid-19 In Mississippi Counties, Jamiko Deleveaux, Vanessa Parks Apr 2020

Health Risks For Covid-19 In Mississippi Counties, Jamiko Deleveaux, Vanessa Parks

Population Briefs

Evidence suggests that individuals with preexisting health concerns may be more susceptible to becoming seriously ill from the novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Such co-morbidities include existing respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues, and immune function. A recent report found that Mississippi and many other southern states had among the highest rates of pre-existing conditions that could contribute to COVID19 complications. Within Mississippi, health outcomes vary spatially. To anticipate where there may be the greatest potential for Mississippians to become seriously ill from COVID-19, we developed a health risk index for each county.

Investigating The Role Of Rap1a In Medial Arterial Vascular Calcification, Amelia Grace Haydel Apr 2020

Investigating The Role Of Rap1a In Medial Arterial Vascular Calcification, Amelia Grace Haydel

Honors Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States with one of the major contributors being vascular calcification, characterized by the deposition of calcium-phosphate hydroxyapatite. Once thought to be a passive process due to aging, medial vascular calcification is becoming better understood as a tightly regulated, cellmediated process. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) within the medial arterial layer respond to inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes in pyrophosphate levels, which induce differentiation into osteoblast-like cells. Fibroblasts within the adventitial layer (AFBs) also alter their function in response to vascular calcification signaling, although this is largely understudied. The AGE/RAGE …

Weaving Charlotte's Web: An In-Depth Guide To Cannabidiol, Lauren Pitts Apr 2020

Weaving Charlotte's Web: An In-Depth Guide To Cannabidiol, Lauren Pitts

Honors Theses

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, first gathered national spotlight after Charlotte Figi and her mother Paige were able to find two physicians willing to prescribe CBD to treat Charlotte’s seizures. Charlotte suffered from Dravet Syndrome, but was able to find relief from CBD, which decreased the number and severity of her seizures. This sparked national interest and was the catalyst that lead to research and changes surrounding CBD uses and legality. Cannabidiol is a single cannabinoid that is found within the Cannabis sativa plant family—the same family that includes marijuana. This cannabinoid differs from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and does not provide …

Journal of Counseling Research and Practice

A random sample of 218 American Counseling Association members responded to a survey related to the integration of technology into the field of counseling pertaining to perceptions of possible barriers and benefits to providing online counseling. Results indicate that 11% of respondents currently provide some type of online counseling and that less than 20% of respondents would consider providing online counseling. Respondents identified both potential barriers and benefits of online counseling indicating that while counselors can recognize benefits to online counseling, they are still wary of potential challenges. Implications for the counseling field and future research directions are discussed.

The review of the literature illustrated a need for the development of measures to provide empirical support in regard to the stressors and coping skills of graduate students in counseling programs. Exploratory factor analyses were applied to the two respective scales to evaluate the constructs. Recommendations and limitations are offered to further the development of psychometric properties within the scales.

Mental Health Literacy Of Ocd And Ocpd In A Rural Area, Patricia Mcintosh, Lauren Paulson Apr 2020

Mental Health Literacy Of Ocd And Ocpd In A Rural Area, Patricia Mcintosh, Lauren Paulson

Journal of Counseling Research and Practice

This study examined the mental health literacy of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) among the rural public. 89 volunteer participants (ages 19-86) completed this study using vignette methodology and a questionnaire. Results supported the hypothesis that mental health literacy would be low, specifically for OCPD. In addition, the majority of participants viewed the disorders similarly. The findings suggest that the current understanding of OCD may not reflect the disorders true diagnostic criteria and that participants viewed both disorders similarly in regards to treatment and stigma. Implications and further recommendations are discussed.

Distinct categories of emotions are identified, including both maladaptive and adaptive forms. Basic ideologies and negative evaluations will also be reviewed to illustrate how these patterns develop and maintain disturbing conditions. The authors will examine the complimentary association between affective and cognitive material and how treating both in therapy can be beneficial. Emotion and cognitive-based interventions will be presented through the use of a case study.

In this article, wepresent a working process for organizing, mapping, and building viable co-constructions with clients. We offer theming strategies, schemes, and categories that practitioners can use during the career counselling process to help clients in gaining movement in their career trajectories.

The Critical Role Of Social Capital During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Lessons From Disaster Research, Vanessa Parks

Population Briefs

The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike any experience humanity has endured. While the pandemic is certainly biological in nature, through the transmission of the novel coronavirus, the experience of the pandemic is inherently social. Researchers may not yet conceptualize pandemics as disasters, but we are beginning to see evidence that they are playing out in some similar ways (widespread social disruption, job loss in particular industries, economic hardship, and illness and death). Disaster researchers emphasize the importance of what is known as social capital, or, the resources (social, economic, emotional) accrued through ones’ social ties.

Reflections From The Field: Discovering International Memphis, Rebecca Lauck Cleary

Blog Posts

Written by Simone Delerme When I want to feel better, I drive down Summer Avenue. There I can see the past, present and future diversity and humanity of Memphis. I discovered Summer Avenue -- a commercial district in Memphis, Tennessee -- while working on an oral history project in 2016. I was interviewing Latino restaurant owners, workers, and other residents to document their experiences living and working in the Mid-South. During this project I became familiar with a concentration of Latino-owned restaurants on Summer Avenue. I began patronizing these businesses, sampling different types of Venezuelan, Colombian, and Mexican cuisine.

Transformative Change In Rural Ethiopia: The Impact Of Small- And Medium-Scale Irrigation, Logan Cochrane, Anne Cafer

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Rural livelihoods in Ethiopia are vulnerable due to their reliance upon variable rainfall and the lack of access to irrigation. Irrigation coverage in the country is low, as the existing systems tend to cover state-run and commercial operations. There is significant potential for irrigation to play a transformative role in rural lives and livelihoods. Much of the evidence available in Ethiopia focuses upon technical studies of irrigation systems or impacts on households after gaining access to irrigation. This article highlights the causes and pathways of change. We focus on more financially-viable and environmentally-sound small- and medium-scale systems, versus the large-scale …
