We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays B0→τ±∓, where ℓ=(e,μ), using the full data sample of 772×106 BB¯ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. The τ± lepton is reconstructed indirectly using the momentum of the reconstructed B and that of the ∓ from the signal decay. We find no evidence for B0→τ±∓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level of B(B0→τ±μ∓)<1.5×10-5 and B(B0→τ±e∓)<1.6×10-5.

Modeling Initial Breakdown Pulses Of Intracloud Lightning Flashes, Nilmini Karunarathne, Thomas C. Marshall, Sumedhe Karunarathne, Maribeth Stolzenburg

In this study 29 initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) from four intracloud (IC) lightning flashes are modeled using data from five or more electric field change (E-change) sites. For each flash the first 5–9 located IBPs are investigated. For each IBP the modeling first extracts the IBP current waveform from the E-change data by matrix inversion and then determines the best channel length and current velocity to match the IBP data. Derived IBP quantities of total charge, charge moment, peak current, peak radiated power, and total energy are calculated. Resulting IBP vertical lengths varied from 27 m to 1300 m; most …

Charged lepton flavor violation is forbidden in the Standard Model but possible in several new physics scenarios. In many of these models, the radiative decays τ± → ℓ±γ (ℓ = e, μ) are predicted to have a sizeable probability, making them particularly interesting channels to search at various experiments. An updated search via τ± → ℓ±γ using full data of the Belle experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 988 fb−1, is reported for charged lepton flavor violation. No significant excess over background predictions from the Standard Model is observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions, B(τ± → …

Model-independent description of nonleptonic decays of charmed mesons is a challenging task due to large nonperturbative effects of strong interactions on the transition amplitudes. We discuss the equivalence of two different flavor-SU(3)-based descriptions of Cabibbo-favored non-leptonic decays of charmed mesons to two-pseudoscalars final states including the η and η′ mesons.

Wastewater treatment systems collect and treat sewage that includes microplastics (MPs). However, we are not aware of any studies on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs), which serve small communities worldwide. Here, we characterized MPs (~45 µm–5 mm) in an aerated WSP serving ~500 houses and an adjacent lake. Putative MPs were most abundant in duckweed (Lemna minor) and sludge (75 ± 22 and 12.8 ± 3.1 particles/g, respectively: ±1 standard deviation (SD), n = 6, dry weight). In the water, average concentrations (particles/L ± 1 SD, n = 6) were highest in the pond …

Using data samples of 89.5 and 711 fb-1 recorded at energies of s=10.52 and 10.58 GeV, respectively, with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider, we report measurements of branching fractions of semileptonic decays Ξc0→Ξ-ℓ+νℓ (ℓ=e or μ) and the CP-asymmetry parameter of Ξc0→Ξ-π+ decay. The branching fractions are measured to be B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)=(1.31±0.04±0.07±0.38)% and B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ)=(1.27±0.06±0.10±0.37)%, and the decay parameter αΞπ is measured to be 0.63±0.03±0.01 with much improved precision compared with the current world average. The corresponding ratio B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)/B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ) is 1.03±0.05±0.07, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. The first measured asymmetry parameter ACP=(αΞ-π++αΞ¯+π-)/(αΞ-π+-αΞ¯+π-)=0.024±0.052±0.014 is found …

Metasurface Cloaks To Decouple Closely Spaced Printed Dipole Antenna Arrays Fed By A Microstrip-To-Balanced Transmission-Line Transition, Doojin Lee, Alexander B. Yakovlev
Faculty and Student Publications
In this work, we present a numerical study of 1D and 2D closely spaced antenna arrays of microstrip dipole antennas covered by a metasurface in order to properly cloak and decouple the antenna arrays operating at neighboring frequencies. We show that the two strongly coupled arrays fed by a microstrip-to-balanced transmission-line transition are effectively decoupled in 1D and 2D array scenarios by covering the dipole antenna elements with an elliptically shaped metasurface. The metasurface comprises sub-wavelength periodic metallic strips printed on an elliptically shaped dielectric cover around the dipole antennas and integrated with the substrate. We present a practical design …

Using 980 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, we report the measurements of the masses, and the first measurements of the instrinsic widths, of the ςc(2455)+ and ςc(2520)+ charmed baryons. We find M(ςc(2455)+)-M(Λc+)=166.17±0.05-0.07+0.16 MeV/c2, Γ(ςc(2455)+)=2.3±0.3±0.3 MeV/c2, M(ςc(2520)+)-M(Λc+)=230.9±0.5-0.1+0.5 MeV/c2, and Γ(ςc(2520)+)=17.2-2.1-0.7+2.3+3.1 MeV/c2, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These measurements can be used to test models of the underlying quark structure of the ςc states.

We measure the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0 → π+π−η, D0 → K+K−η, and D0 → ϕη, using 980 fb−1 of data from the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e− collider. We obtainB(D0→π+π−η)=[1.22±0.02(stat)±0.02(syst)±0.03(Bref)]×10−3,B(D0→K+K−η)=[1.80−0.06+0.07(stat)±0.04(syst)±0.05(Bref)]×10−4,B(D0→ϕη)=[1.84±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)±0.05(Bref)]×10−4, where the third uncertainty (Bref) is from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of the reference mode D0 → K−π+η. The color-suppressed decay D0 → ϕη is observed for the first time, with very high significance. The results for the CP asymmetries areACP(D0π+π−η)=[0.9±1.2(stat)±0.5(syst)]%,ACP(D0→K+K−η)=[−1.4±3.3(stat)±1.1(syst)]%,ACP(D0→ϕη)=[−1.9±4.4(stat)±0.6(syst)]%. The results for D0 → π+π−η are a significant improvement over previous results. The branching fraction and ACP …

What Worked, What Did Not: University Instruction During A Pandemic, Neil A. Manson, Randy M. Wadkins

In this report, we discuss the experience of both lecturing and teaching laboratory classes during a pandemic at the University of Mississippi (UM). UM is a relatively rural university with approximately 20 000 students. The instructional approaches that we attempted would be significantly more difficult to implement at universities with larger class sizes, geographically more restricted with regard to climate, or more urban with confined space, yet we observed many failures, even at a rural, spacious campus. Here, we note the various models of instruction that—in our case—could be separated into three approaches: in-person (i.e., traditional face-to-face instruction), online only, …
