Bregman Distance, Approximate Compactness And Chebyshev Sets In Banach Spaces, Wen Song Sep 2009

Bregman Distance, Approximate Compactness And Chebyshev Sets In Banach Spaces, Wen Song

Analysis Seminar

In this paper, we first introduce the notion of locally uniformly totally convex functions defined on a Banach space and discuss its relations to totally convex, essentially strictly convex, and uniformly convex functions. We then present sufficient conditions for the (norm-weak) upper semicontinuity and (norm-weak) continuity of the Bregman projection operator and the relative projection operator in terms of the notion of -approximate (weak) compactness whenever is either a locally uniformly totally convex function or coercive, and is a nonempty closed subset of int(dom ). Finally, we present sufficient and equivalent conditions for the convexity of …

On Compact Edge-Colorings : A Polynomial Time Reduction From K-Linear To K-Cyclic, Sivan Altinakar Jul 2009

On Compact Edge-Colorings : A Polynomial Time Reduction From K-Linear To K-Cyclic, Sivan Altinakar

Combinatorics Seminar

An edge-coloring of a graph is an assignment of an integer (called color) to every edge so that adjacent edges get different colors. An edge-coloring that uses k different colors is k-linear compact if the colors incident to every vertex are consecutive in {0, · · · , k−1}. The problem k−LCCP is to determine whether a given graph admits a k-linear compact edge coloring. An edge-coloring is k-cyclic compact if there are two positive integers av, bv in {0, · · · , k−1} for every vertex v such that the colors incident to v are exactly {av, (av …

Quantile Regression: An Education Policy Research Tool, Edward B. Reeves, Jesse Lowe Apr 2009

Quantile Regression: An Education Policy Research Tool, Edward B. Reeves, Jesse Lowe

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Ordinary least squares regression is often used in education policy research. Unfortunately, OLS regression coefficients may mislead. In OLS models, the coefficients express the conditional mean relations among the variables. Still, what if this estimate of central tendency in the conditional distribution fails to convey important information about the distribution? Quantile regression is a statistical technique that allows variation in the conditional distribution to be examined. Therefore, it can be used to check the validity and applicable range of OLS coefficients. Following the method of Koenker and Hallock (2001), we compare OLS and quantile regression results, examining variables related to …

Zeros Of The Riemann Zeta Function: Computations And Implications, Andrew Odlyzko Apr 2009

Zeros Of The Riemann Zeta Function: Computations And Implications, Andrew Odlyzko

Algebra/Number Theory Seminar

The Riemann Hypothesis is now left as the most famous unsolved problem in mathematics. Extensive computations of zeros have been used not only to provide evidence for its truth, but also for the truth of deeper conjectures that predict fine scale statistics on the distribution of zeros of various zeta functions. These conjectures connect number theory with physics, and are regarded by many as the most promising avenue towards a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis. However, as is often true in mathematics, numerical data is subject to a variety of interpretations, and it is possible to argue that the numerical …

Duality Of Integral Operators In Lₚ-Spaces, Anton Schep Mar 2009

Duality Of Integral Operators In Lₚ-Spaces, Anton Schep

Analysis Seminar

A classical result in functional analysis states that the dual of the compact operators on a Hilbert space are the so-called trace-class operators, and the dual of the trace-class operators (i.e., the second dual of the compact operators) is the space of all bounded operators on the Hilbert space. In this talk, we will discuss two descriptions of the space of regular integral operators on Lₚ-spaces. One of these descriptions will provide an order-theoretic analogue of the aforementioned result for integral operators on Lₚ-spaces.

On Minimally K-Connected Matroids, James Reid Feb 2009

On Minimally K-Connected Matroids, James Reid

Combinatorics Seminar

A matroid M is minimally k-connected if M is k- connected and, for every e E(M), Me is not k-connected. It is conjectured that every minimally k-connected matroid with E(M) 2(k 1) has a cocircuit of size k. We resolve the conjecture almost a rmatively for the case k = 4 by nding the unique counterexample. We also construct a counterexample to the conjecture with 2k + 1 elements for each k 5. This is joint work with Haidong Wu and Joe Zhou.

Closure Operations On Ideals In Commutative Rings, Neil Epstein Feb 2009

Closure Operations On Ideals In Commutative Rings, Neil Epstein

Algebra/Number Theory Seminar

A closure operation is an idempotent endomorphism on the set of ideals of a given [commutative Noetherian] ring, which produces an ideal that contains the given ideal, and preserves containment of ideals. If defined element-wise, a closure operation can be seen as a necessary condition for membership in an ideal. I will discuss various closure operations (e.g. integral closure, tight closure, and continuous closure), as well as some of their properties, how they arise, and criteria for containment. I will discuss the related notions of (1) (minimal) reduction with respect to a closure and (2) special parts of closures, including …

A Comparison Of Zero Divisor Graphs, Sandra Spiroff Feb 2009

A Comparison Of Zero Divisor Graphs, Sandra Spiroff

Combinatorics Seminar

A zero divisor graph of a ring R is a visual representation of the zero divisors and their relationships in R. (If a and b are non-zero elements in R such that ab = 0, then a and b are vertices of the graph and connected by an edge.) These graphs have been studied by Beck, Anderson & Livingston, Mulay, and Wickham, to name just a few. We will give several examples of the original zero divisor graph introduced by Beck. Then we will compare and contrast this graph with the graph of equivalence classes of zero divisors. Our particular …

Deletion-Contraction Polynomials, Deborah Chun Jan 2009

Deletion-Contraction Polynomials, Deborah Chun

Combinatorics Seminar

Let M be a matroid with rank function r, and let e E(M). The deletion-contraction polymatroid with rank function f = rMe +rM e will be denoted Pe(M). The polymatroid Pe(M) is uniquely determined by M and e. Similarly, a deletion-contraction polymatroid determines M, unless e is a loop or coloop. This talk will characterize all polymatroids of this deletioncontraction form by giving the set of excluded minors. Vertigan conjectured that the class of GF(q)- representable deletion-contraction polymatroids is well-quasi- ordered. From this attractive conjecture, both Rotas Conjecture and the WQO Conjecture for GF(q)-representable matroids would follow.

A Chain Theorem For Internally 4-Connected Matroids, Carolyn Chun Jan 2009

A Chain Theorem For Internally 4-Connected Matroids, Carolyn Chun

Combinatorics Seminar

Let M be a matroid. When M is 3-connected, Tuttes Wheels- andWhirls Theorem proves that M has a 3-connected proper minor N with exactly one element fewer than M unless M is a wheel or a whirl. I will present a corresponding result for internally 4-connected binary matroids. This presentation is based on joint work by myself, Dillon Mayhew, and James Oxley.

Accountants' Responsibility For The Information They Report: An Historical Case Study Of Financial Information, Ellen J. Lippman Jan 2009

Accountants' Responsibility For The Information They Report: An Historical Case Study Of Financial Information, Ellen J. Lippman

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper describes an instructional case that uses historical documentation to enable the reader to consider his/her own responsibility for the preparation and reporting of information. In this case, the reader is provided a summarized income statement. Then, as detailed information about the financial statement is introduced, the reader is asked to consider the ethics of preparing and using the statement. The financial statement represents a projected income statement for a Holocaust camp prisoner during World War II. The statement includes anticipated revenue from the selling of body parts upon the prisoner's death, estimated as nine months from the time …
