Detector Characterization Analysis Of The Initial Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Ligo) Using Principal Component Analysis (Pca), Daniel Duddleston
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate transient noise events in data from the initial Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and to test detector characterization software developed by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC). Detector characterization is the process of identifying and removing noise that corrupts the data stream of the LIGO detectors. This is vital to improving the sensitivity of the LIGO interferometer and increasing the probability of detecting gravitational waves of astrophysical origin. The data analyzed in this thesis were collected in 2010 during the S6 (Enhanced LIGO) science run. Two software tools, PCAT and Omega Scans, were …
The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee
The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee
Honors Theses
Humans are socially driven creatures that require constant interaction. One way humans have consistently expressed their social nature since prehistory is through sharing meals. Recent studies and literature were examined in order to investigate the roots behind why sharing meals has been the most consistent method of social output. Through careful reading and analysis, reasons behind why people share meals were traced in perspective levels. The biological and molecular aspect explains how humans evolved from prehistoric primates and their similarities associated with food consumption. Genetics and food preferences also play a role by allowing humans to taste food rather than …
An Environmentally-Friendly Design To Reduce Energy Loss By Heat Transfer Through Windows, Andrew Li
An Environmentally-Friendly Design To Reduce Energy Loss By Heat Transfer Through Windows, Andrew Li
Honors Theses
With windows as main areas of energy loss in residential environments, a market exists for a product to act a removable barrier which improves heat transfer for cases of extreme temperatures in seasonal weather. Such a product would allow consumers to save money in the long run without permanently losing the use of their windows when the weather is mild and such an apparatus is not needed. This project designs such a product using an assembly of polished aluminum foil for low radiation emissivity, ABS plastic for an insulating material with low conductivity, and an aluminum glass mirror pane which …
Identification Of A Phytotoxic Fungus And An Investigation Into The Isolation Of Its Phytotoxic Constituents, William E. Briscoe
Identification Of A Phytotoxic Fungus And An Investigation Into The Isolation Of Its Phytotoxic Constituents, William E. Briscoe
Honors Theses
A fungus was isolated from Hedera helix (English ivy) leaves experiencing necrosis and identified as Diaporthe eres by molecular techniques. The fungus was grown in potato dextrose broth medium and the culture medium was extracted with ethyl acetate. Bioassay guided fractionation of ethyl acetate extract of culture filtrate of this fungus led to the isolation of two phytotoxic compounds that are active against the seed germination of the monocotyledon Agrostis stolonifera at 1 mg mL-1. Structures of these active compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods and were determined 8-hydroxy-3.7-dimethylisochroman-1-one and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-ethanol. This is the first finding presented on the phytotoxic …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A New Bimetallic Catalyst, Gjl-46, And Its Use In The Catalytic Hydrosilylation Of Phenylacetylene, Gabriel J. Labonia
Honors Theses
A new bimetallic catalyst was synthesized from the metalation of 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene) bis(4-butyl-1 H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium) iodide with silver oxide and the transmetalation of that complex with Rh(COD)2OTf. The structure of the compound, GJL-46, with molecular formula C34H46I2N6Rh2, was confirmed with mass spectra analysis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The catalytic activity of the produced molecule, GJL-46, with molecular formula C34H46I2N6Rh2, in the hydrosilylation of phenylacetylene is reported.
Shear Waves In Highly Concentrated Viscoelastic Wormlike Micellar Fluid, Rachel B. Crim
Shear Waves In Highly Concentrated Viscoelastic Wormlike Micellar Fluid, Rachel B. Crim
Honors Theses
Wormlike micellar fluids form by the self-aggregation of surfactant molecules in aqueous solution. These non-Newtonian fluids have been well studied and are used in the oil industry, hydraulics, and medical research. However, little is known regarding the structure of the three-dimensional networks in which the worms become entangled and possibly branched, especially at high concentrations. What is known is that this composition results in two distinctive fluid characteristics: viscoelasticity and strain-birefringence. The latter is exploited in this work in order to study the shear wave speed and attenuation in 500/300mM CTAB/NaSal fluid. Three different experiments were conducted using either a …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of Small Basis Sets And The Counterpoise Procedure To Reproduce Complete Basis Set Limit Higher-Order Correlation Corrections For Weakly Bound Molecular Clusters, Cara M. Thorne
Honors Theses
The efficacy of small basis sets and the counterpoise procedure to accurately reproduce higher-order correlation corrections, which are routinely employed to estimate CCSD(T) interaction energies at the complete basis set (CBS) limit using an additive scheme, was examined through the study of four dispersion-dominated dimer systems. The dimers of acetylene (HCCH), cyanogen (NCCN), diphosphorous (P2) and 1,4-diphosphabutadiyne (PCCP) were studied in three different configurations: cross, parallel-displaced and t-shaped at the intermolecular distance corresponding to the minimum point on the CCSD(T) potential energy curve (PEC) for each system using MP2, CCSD and CCSD(T) methods in conjunction with eight basis sets from …
Rank-Based Two Sample Tests Under A General Alternative, Jamye Curry
Rank-Based Two Sample Tests Under A General Alternative, Jamye Curry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of testing whether two samples come from the same or different population is a classical one in statistics. In this dissertation, I first study rank based formulation of univariate two-sample distribution-free tests. One form of the test statistic is the average of between-group distances of ranks. The other form of the test statistic is the difference between the average of between-group distances of ranks and the average of within-group distances of ranks. Although they are different in formulation, they are closely related to the two-sample Cramer-von Mises criterion. The first one is a linear transformation of Cramer-von Mises …
Relaxation Adaptive Memory Programming For The Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem, Robert Christopher-Lee Riley
Relaxation Adaptive Memory Programming For The Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem, Robert Christopher-Lee Riley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) is one of the most intractable problems in operations research; it is NP-hard in the strong sense. Due to the hardness of the problem, exact solution methods can only tackle instances of relatively small size. For larger instances commonly found in real applications heuristic solution methods are necessary to find near-optimal solutions within acceptable computation time limits. In this study algorithms based on the relaxation adaptive memory programming (RAMP) method (Rego, 2005) are developed for the purpose of solving the RCPSP. The RAMP algorithms developed here combine mathematical relaxation, including Lagrangian relaxation and …

Raptorqp2p: Maximize The Performance Of P2p File Distribution With Raptorq Coding, Zeyang Su
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
BitTorrent is the most popular Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing system widely used for distributing large files over the Internet. It has attracted extensive attentions from both network operators and researchers for investigating its deployment and performance. For example, recent studies have shown that under steady state, its rarest first scheme with the tit-for-tat mechanism can work very effectively and make BitTorrent near optimal for the generic file downloading process. However, in practice, the highly dynamic network environment, especially the notorious user churns prevalently existing in most peer-to-peer systems, can severely degrade the downloading performance. In this thesis, we first study …
The Effects Of Diffusion, Capillary Heterogeneity, And Porous Media Morphology On Co2 Migration In Porous Media, Oluseye Babafemi Adeyemi
The Effects Of Diffusion, Capillary Heterogeneity, And Porous Media Morphology On Co2 Migration In Porous Media, Oluseye Babafemi Adeyemi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Modified Invasion Percolation (MIP) model was used to simulate the invasion of CO2 into a medium initially saturated with water and the style of capillary heterogeneity in combination with buoyancy and viscous forces were varied to yield 105 different simulation scenarios. Thereafter, the invasion of the CO2 gas is simulated using a finite difference model and the effective mass transfer coefficient is determined and linked to various styles of capillary heterogeneity. Results show that an increase in saturation does not result in an increase in mass transfer coefficient rather, the surface area, which in turn is controlled by the …

Spectroscopic Analyses Of Factors Affecting Formation And Stability Of I-Motif Dna, Samantha Michelle Reilly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The four-stranded i-motif (iM) conformation of DNA has importance to a variety of biochemical systems that include nanomaterials and oncogene regulation. Fundamental studies to understand iM formation and its structure in solution still remain to be done. In this dissertation, we will discuss the use of the fluorescent base analog tC° to determine the structural state of DNA in solution. We will also demonstrate the use of tC° to determine both the hydrodynamic properties and the folding mechanism of an iM. We also determined the loop length dependence on iM formation and stability. Our hydrodynamic studies show that the iM …

Impact Of Thread Scheduling On Modern Gpus, Orevaoghene Addoh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has become a more important component in high-performance computing systems as it accelerates data and compute intensive applications significantly with less cost and power. The GPU achieves high performance by executing massive number of threads in parallel in a SPMD (Single Program Multiple Data) fashion. Threads are grouped into workgroups by programmer and workgroups are then assigned to each compute core on the GPU by hardware. Once assigned, a workgroup is further subgrouped into wavefronts of the fixed number of threads by hardware when executed in a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) fashion. In this …
The Impact Of Ph On The Structure And Function Of Neural Cadherin, Jared Michael Jungles
The Impact Of Ph On The Structure And Function Of Neural Cadherin, Jared Michael Jungles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Neural (N-) cadherin is a transmembrane protein within adherens junctions that mediates cell-cell adhesion. It has 5 modular extracellular domains (EC1-EC5) that bind 3 calcium ions between each of the modules. Calcium binding is required for dimerization. N-cadherin is involved in diverse processes including tissue morphogenesis, excitatory synapse formation and dynamics, and metastasis of cancer. During neurotransmission and tumorigenesis, fluctuations in extracellular pH occur, causing tissue acidosis with associated physiological consequences. Studies reported here aim to determine the effect of pH on the dimerization properties of EC1-EC2 N-cadherin in vitro. Since N-cadherin is an anionic protein, we hypothesized that acidification …

Finite Element Analysis Of Shear Resistant Mechanisms For Biolaminate Interfaces, Matthew Nelms
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Alligator gar possesses a flexible dermal armor consisting of overlapping ganoid scales. Each scale is a bilayer hydroxyapatite and collagen-based bio-laminate for protection against predation. The exoskeleton fish scale is comprised of a stiff outer ganoine layer, a characteristic "sawtooth" pattern at the interface and a compliant bone inner layer with all materials exhibiting a decreasing elastic modulus, yield strength and density through the thickness. Experiments on ganoid scales revealed properties such as damage mitigation and energy dissipation that are unique to biological dermal armor. The objective of this investigation is to develop a fundamental understanding of the stress …
Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling Of Multiple-Sized Sediment Transport Modeling Under Current And Waves, Qianru Lin
Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling Of Multiple-Sized Sediment Transport Modeling Under Current And Waves, Qianru Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model of multiple-sized sediment transport under current and waves is developed. The coastal circulations are described by a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, which is governed by the three-dimensional phase-averaged shallow water flow equations coupled with wave radiation stresses. Methods are also developed to determine the bed shear stress due to current only, waves only, and coexistence of current and waves, accounting for the nonlinear interaction of the current and waves on bed shear stresses. Meanwhile, empirical formulas for bed-load transport capacity, suspended-load transport capacity, and near-bed suspended-load concentration under current and waves are established for …

By contrast, other studies have suggested that vgp leads to lower academic performance - indicating further research on vgp effects is needed. This study investigated the effects of vgp on cognitive skills and academic performance. Methods: 208 participants were recruited from the University of Mississippi psychology department in exchange for research participation credit. The sample was 68.9% female and 31.1% male. Ages ranged …
Mercury In Fish In North Mississippi Reservoirs: Statistical Analysis And Risk Assessment, Stacy Wolff
Mercury In Fish In North Mississippi Reservoirs: Statistical Analysis And Risk Assessment, Stacy Wolff
Honors Theses
Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant of particular concern because it is wide-spread, persistent, and poses a serious risk to human health. Once released into the atmosphere, it cycles through the environment by a series of complex biogeochemical processes. Upon deposition to aquatic ecosystems, inorganic mercury can be transformed to methylmercury by microorganisms. Methylmercury is a known human neurotoxin that can bioacculmulate in fish tissue and biomagnify up aquatic food chains. Consumption of contaminated fish is the primary route of human exposure to methylmercury. The Mississippi Department of Health has issued fish consumption advisories for Grenada and Enid Lakes in the …
The Tutte Polynomial Formula For The Class Of Twisted Wheel Graphs, Amanda Hall
The Tutte Polynomial Formula For The Class Of Twisted Wheel Graphs, Amanda Hall
Honors Theses
The 20th century work of William T. Tutte developed a graph polynomial that is modernly known as the Tutte polynomial. Graph polynomials, such as the Tutte polynomial, the chromatic polynomial, and the Jones polynomial, are at the heart of combinatorical and algebraic graph theory and can be used as tools with which to study graph invariants. Graph invariants, such as order, degree, size, and connectivity which are defined in Section 2, are graph properties preserved under all isomorphisms of a graph. Thus any graph polynomial is not dependent upon a particular labeling or drawing but presents relevant information about the …
Independence Polynomials And Extended Vertex Reduction, Jonathan Broom
Independence Polynomials And Extended Vertex Reduction, Jonathan Broom

The independence polynomial of a graph is a polynomial whose coefficients number the independent sets of each size in that graph. This paper looks into methods of obtaining these polynomials for certain classes of graphs which prove too large to easily find the polynomial by traditional methods.
Domain-Specific Probes For Calcium Binding To Neural Cadherin, Charles Ryan Humphries
Domain-Specific Probes For Calcium Binding To Neural Cadherin, Charles Ryan Humphries
Honors Theses
Cadherin is a major mediator of cell adhesion whose adhesive function is dependent upon calcium binding. However, the binding of calcium is not completely understood. The binding of calcium can be monitored using an abbreviated construct that contains only the first two extracellular domains (EC12) which includes two tryptophan residues, W2 and W113. Single tryptophan mutants were created which contain only W113 (W2A) and W2 (W113F). Fluorescence spectra were obtained of W2A, W113F, and WT in the presence and absence of calcium. Calcium titration data were collected for each protein. In both experiments, calcium binding increased the fluorescence signal of …
Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González
Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González
Honors Theses
The biogas production from organic waste—animal, sewage, landfill material— could be a valuable renewable fuel. Before this biogas—predominately bio-methane— can be converted to fuel, it must be dehumidified. Typically membrane-based gas dehumidification uses hydrophilic polymer membrane materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cellulose acetate (CA). The main problems with polymer dehumidification membranes are methane loss and the susceptibility of polymer materials to plasticization by H2O. Room temperature ionic liquid membranes (RTIL- membranes), according to recent literature, are not plasticized by water and have large water/CH4 selectivities. We built on the initial literature RTIL-dehumidification data by looking at a series of …

Investigation Into The Synthesis Of Dodecahydro-3a,9a-Diazaperylene, Andrew Palmer
Honors Theses
Dodecahydro-3a,9a-diazaperylene (DHDAP) may serve as a potential donor for use in a donor-sigma-acceptor complex for unimolecular rectification. In order to use DHDAP as a donor, its synthesis must first be studied and altered in such manners as to add a synthetic handle. Other things of important include increasing the yield and better understanding the mechanism by which DHDAP forms. Numerous experiments were conducted in various manners such as testing various solvents among various temperatures to even adding in extra reagents to push the reaction one way or another. In the end the yield of the synthesis was found to improve …
The Matrix Method Of Linear Dichroism, Kenna Collums
The Matrix Method Of Linear Dichroism, Kenna Collums
Honors Theses
This thesis discusses linear dichroism, and in particular the matrix method behind the spectroscopic technique. Linear dichroism uses the difference in the absorption of light that is parallel to the orientation axis and the absorption of light that is perpendicular to the orientation axis. From this process, the structure and function of molecules can be studied. The matrix method diagonalizes a Hamiltonian matrix with a unitary matrix. This Hamiltonian matrix is constructed from the transition energies, which are the diagonal elements, and coupling energies, which are off-diagonal elements.

Unsettle Me, Lanie King Anderson
Honors Theses
This book is about my journey of faith in Jesus Christ during my undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi. I read memoirs about others' spiritual journeys and studied their writing styles and storytelling methods before beginning my own memoir about my moments of spiritual unsettledness in school. I am convinced that the college experience, if whole-heartedly embraced, changes people. As a student, I have grown personally, cognitively, socially, and culturally in four years, such a short time for such change and growth. But I have especially grown spiritually because of my experiences in college. Questions have arisen about my …
