Electronically Excited States Of Closed-Shell, Cyano-Functionalized Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Anions, Taylor J. Santaloci, Ryan C. Fortenberry Mar 2021

Electronically Excited States Of Closed-Shell, Cyano-Functionalized Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Anions, Taylor J. Santaloci, Ryan C. Fortenberry

Faculty and Student Publications

Few anions exhibit electronically excited states, and, if they do, the one or two possible excitations typically transpire beyond the visible spectrum into the near-infrared. These few, red-shifted electronic absorption features make anions tantalizing candidates as carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), a series of mostly unknown, astronomically ubiquitous absorption features documented for over a century. The recent interstellar detection of benzonitrile implies that cyano-functionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) anions may be present in space. The presently reported quantum chemical work explores the electronic properties of deprotonated benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene anions functionalized with a single cyano group. Both …

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ+μ− and B → Ke+e−, and their ratio (RK), using a data sample of 711 fb−1 that contains 772 × 106BB¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The ratio RK is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q2): q2 ∈ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV2/c4, along with the whole q2 region. The RK value for q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 is 1.03−0.24+0.28 ± 0.01. The first and …

We measure the time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0→KS0KS0KS0 decays using 772×106BB¯ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The obtained mixing-induced and direct CP asymmetries are -0.71±0.23 (stat)±0.05 (syst) and 0.12±0.16 (stat)±0.05 (syst), respectively. These values are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. The significance of CP violation differs from zero by 2.5 standard deviations.

Development And Characterization Of Sustained-Released Donepezil Hydrochloride Solid Dispersions Using Hot Melt Extrusion Technology, Abdullah Alshetaili, Bjad K. Almutairy, Sultan M. Alshehri, Michael A. Repka

Faculty and Student Publications

The aim of this work was to develop the sustained release formulation of donepezil hydrochloride (DH) using the hot-melt extruded solid dispersion technique via the rational screening of hydrophobic carriers. Hydrophobic carriers with different physicochemical properties such as pH-independent swellability, low-permeability (Eudragit® RS PO (E-RS)), pH-independent non-swellability (ethyl cellulose N7 (EC-N7)), and the presence of lipids (Compritol® 888 ATO (C-888)) with or without pore-forming agents were used to achieve the sustained release profile of DH. Mannitol (MNT) was chosen as the temporary pore-forming agent. The thermal analysis showed that both the drug and C-888 preserved their crystallinity within a solid …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a pandemic of historic proportions and continues to spread globally, with enormous consequences to human health. Currently there is no vaccine, effective therapeutic, or prophylactic. As with other betacoronaviruses, attachment and entry of SARS-CoV-2 are mediated by the spike glycoprotein (SGP). In addition to its well-documented interaction with its receptor, human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), SGP has been found to bind to glycosaminoglycans like heparan sulfate, which is found on the surface of virtually all mammalian cells. Here, we pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 SGP on a third-generation lentiviral (pLV) vector and tested the …

Anomalous Dimensions From Gauge Couplings In Smeft With Right-Handed Neutrinos, Alakabha Datta, Jacky Kumar, Hongkai Liu, Danny Marfatia

Faculty and Student Publications

Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is an effective theory with Standard Model (SM) gauge-invariant operators constructed only from SM and right-handed neutrino fields. For the full set of dimension-six SMNEFT operators, we present the gauge coupling terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for renormalization group evolution (RGE) of the Wilson coefficients between a new physics scale and the electroweak scale. We find that the SMNEFT operators can be divided into five subsets which are closed under RGE. Our results apply for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We also discuss the operator mixing pattern numerically and comment on …

Gut Microbiomes Of Freshwater Mussels (Unionidae) Are Taxonomically And Phylogenetically Variable Across Years But Remain Functionally Stable, Mark Mccauley, Marlène Chiarello, Carla L. Atkinson, Colin R. Jackson Feb 2021

Gut Microbiomes Of Freshwater Mussels (Unionidae) Are Taxonomically And Phylogenetically Variable Across Years But Remain Functionally Stable, Mark Mccauley, Marlène Chiarello, Carla L. Atkinson, Colin R. Jackson

Faculty and Student Publications

Freshwater mussels perform essential ecosystem functions, yet we have no information on how their microbiomes fluctuate over time. In this study, we examined temporal variation in the microbiome of six mussel species (Lampsilis ornata, Obovaria unicolor, Elliptio arca, Fusconaia cerina, Cyclonaias asperata, and Tritogonia verrucosa) sampled from the same river in 2016 and 2019. We examined the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and inferred functional (from 16S rRNA sequences) facets of their microbiome diversity. Significant differences between the two years were identified in five of the six species sampled. However, not all species that exhibited a temporally variable microbiome were functionally distinct across …

Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies And Spectroscopic Constants For The Detection Of Ethynol In Space, Jax D. Dallas, Brent R. Westbrook, Ryan C. Fortenberry

Faculty and Student Publications

The ethynol (HCCOH) molecule has recently been shown to be present in simulated astrochemical ices possibly linking it to molecular building blocks for interstellar complex organic molecules like amino acids. The proposed reaction mechanism suggests the simultaneous formation of both ketene and ethynol from mixed carbon monoxide/water ice in simulated interstellar conditions. Rigorous anharmonic spectral data within both the IR and microwave regions are needed for possible detection of ethynol in the interstellar medium. This study provides the first such data for this molecule from high-level quantum chemical computations where experiment is currently lacking. Ethynol has a (Formula presented.) comparable …

Evidence Of The Four-Quark Nature Of F0 (980) And F0 (500), N. N. Achasov, J. V. Bennett, A. V. Kiselev, E. A. Kozyrev, G. N. Shestakov Jan 2021

Evidence Of The Four-Quark Nature Of F0 (980) And F0 (500), N. N. Achasov, J. V. Bennett, A. V. Kiselev, E. A. Kozyrev, G. N. Shestakov

Faculty and Student Publications

There exists a great deal of concrete evidence in favor of the exotic four-quark nature of light scalars. At the same time, the further expansion of the area of the q2q¯2 model validity for light scalars on ever new processes seems extremely interesting and important. We analyze the BESIII data on the decay J/ψ→γπ0π0 and show that the results of this high-statistics experiment can be interpreted in favor of the four-quark nature of light scalar mesons f0(980) and f0(500).

Metasurface Cloaks To Decouple Closely Spaced Printed Dipole Antenna Arrays Fed By A Microstrip-To-Balanced Transmission-Line Transition, Doojin Lee, Alexander B. Yakovlev Jan 2021

Metasurface Cloaks To Decouple Closely Spaced Printed Dipole Antenna Arrays Fed By A Microstrip-To-Balanced Transmission-Line Transition, Doojin Lee, Alexander B. Yakovlev

Faculty and Student Publications

In this work, we present a numerical study of 1D and 2D closely spaced antenna arrays of microstrip dipole antennas covered by a metasurface in order to properly cloak and decouple the antenna arrays operating at neighboring frequencies. We show that the two strongly coupled arrays fed by a microstrip-to-balanced transmission-line transition are effectively decoupled in 1D and 2D array scenarios by covering the dipole antenna elements with an elliptically shaped metasurface. The metasurface comprises sub-wavelength periodic metallic strips printed on an elliptically shaped dielectric cover around the dipole antennas and integrated with the substrate. We present a practical design …

The Fourfold Route To Empirical Enlightenment Experimental Philosophy’S Adolescence And The Changing Body Of Work, Robert Barnard, Joseph Ulatowski, Jonathan M. Weinberg Jan 2021

The Fourfold Route To Empirical Enlightenment Experimental Philosophy’S Adolescence And The Changing Body Of Work, Robert Barnard, Joseph Ulatowski, Jonathan M. Weinberg

Faculty and Student Publications

The time has come to consider whether experimental philosophy’s (“x-phi”) early arguments, debates, and conceptual frameworks, that may have worn well in its early days, fit with the diverse range of projects undertaken by experimental philosophers. Our aim is to propose a novel taxonomy for x-phi that identifies four paths from empirical findings to philosophical consequences, which we call the “fourfold route.” We show how this taxonomy can be fruitfully applied even at what one might have taken to be the furthest edges of possible applications of x-phi in metaphysics and formal philosophy. Ultimately, the fourfold route helps us understand …

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods In The Nimble And Nimblesmc R Packages, Nicholas Michaud, Perry De Valpine, Daniel Turek, Dao Nguyen

Faculty and Student Publications

nimble is an R package for constructing algorithms and conducting inference on hierarchical models. The nimble package provides a unique combination of flexible model specification and the ability to program model-generic algorithms. Specifically, the package allows users to code models in the BUGS language, and it allows users to write algorithms that can be applied to any appropriate model. In this paper, we introduce the nimbleSMC R package. nimbleSMC contains algorithms for state-space model analysis using sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) techniques that are built using nimble. We first provide an overview of state-space models and commonly-used SMC algorithms. We then …

Elucidating The Interfacial Interactions Between Biomacromolecules And Functionalized Pamam-Based Materials For Biomedical Applications, Briana L. Simms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) is a dendrimer structure with a polypeptide backbone architecture. It has been utilized in a wide variety of applications but has found significant utility in biomedical applications. PAMAM has been studied extensively due to its globular structure that is similar to proteins found in the body. The branched architecture and overall size provide a favorable environment for host-guest interactions and allows for the loading of small molecules for therapeutic delivery. Although PAMAM has many benefits for use in the area of therapeutic delivery, a primary area of concern for this molecular architecture is the terminal amines that serve …

"Beyond The Lines": A Reassessment Of Civil War Prisons, Beth Kruse Jan 2021

"Beyond The Lines": A Reassessment Of Civil War Prisons, Beth Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

“Beyond the Lines”: A Reassessment of Civil War Prisons, challenges the historical interpretations of Civil War military prisons. Specifically, it analyses the political, social, and economic conditions of these systems by not only adding omitted gender, class, and race scholarship but flushing out the power dynamics between these group and military administrations. The re-examination of primary source material by reading against the grain to find overlooked insights reveals these sources not only provide a wealth of information about omitted groups, but that they have been misinterpreted. Additionally, applying the concepts of historical memory establishes how the Lost Cause shaped not …

Dependency-Based Reactive Change Propagation Design Pattern Applied To Environments With High Unpredictability, João Paulo Oliveira Marum Jan 2021

Dependency-Based Reactive Change Propagation Design Pattern Applied To Environments With High Unpredictability, João Paulo Oliveira Marum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transitional turbulence is a period of chaotic or unreliable variation in the state of a software system that results from changes in the system’s interconnected components. During these periods of instability, an external observer of the system’s state may “see” erroneous results. This is a problem that can affect visual user interfaces such as those in virtual and augmented reality applications and desktop or Web GUIs. In this research, we study two different reactive applications developed in C# on .NET. We reduce the transitional turbulence by augmenting the base applications with a dependency-graph-based event scheduling approach. The first study investigates …

On Domination And Bondage Numbers Of Some Classes Of Graphs, Andrew Pham Jan 2021

On Domination And Bondage Numbers Of Some Classes Of Graphs, Andrew Pham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given a simple finite graph G=(V,E), a vertex subset D ? V(G) is said to be a dominating set of G if every vertex v ? V(G)-D is adjacent to a vertex in D. The domination number of G, denoted ?(G), is the minimum cardinality among all dominating sets of G. In a network, the domination number determines the minimum number of sites required to dominate the entire network at a minimum cost. The bondage number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality among all edge sets B such that ?(G-B) > ?(G). The bondage number may serve as a …

Cross-Layer Optimization On Wireless Visual Sensor Networks For 3d Indoor Monitoring: A Top-Down Approach, Zhonghui Wang Jan 2021

Cross-Layer Optimization On Wireless Visual Sensor Networks For 3d Indoor Monitoring: A Top-Down Approach, Zhonghui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As one of the latest advances in wireless sensor network (WSN), wireless visual sensor network (WVSN) bears a number of distinct features compared to its predecessor, mainly due to its directional visual coverage on the sensing field. This also renders previous solutions proposed for WSN may not work well for WVSN. For example, k-coverage has been introduced to WSNs for fault tolerance and high monitoring quality by omni-directional sensors but becomes incapable to cope with the directional coverage of sensors in WVSNs. Moreover, compared to scalar data in WSNs, visual data are much larger, difficult to aggregate and usually streamed …

Influences Of Alumina Particles On Hydroxyl Macrostate Estimates In A High-Speed, Reacting Flow, Jonathan Herlan Jan 2021

Influences Of Alumina Particles On Hydroxyl Macrostate Estimates In A High-Speed, Reacting Flow, Jonathan Herlan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Line-of-sight spectral observations in the near ultraviolet regime are made of the high-speed afterburning exhaust plume from a lab-scale rocket simulator which reacts gaseous H2 with gaseous O2. In the plume, afterburning results from energetic, unspent fuel (H2) reacting with the external Air. Hydroxyl (OH) is a dominant intermediate product in the reaction zone and is probed using broadband, near UV absorption spectroscopy to estimate the macrostate parameters of the exhaust plume. Molecular energy transition data from the HITRAN online database is used to model the absorption spectra as a bivariate function of the macrostate parameters temperature, T, and molecular …

Enhanced Electrochemical And Light-Driven Co2 Reduction By Incoporating Pendant Functionality In The Second-Coordination Sphere Of Molecular Catalysts, Sayontani Sinha Roy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in global population and rapid industrialization, a gigantic amount of greenhouse gases is being released into the atmosphere each year. The catastrophic effect of these accumulated greenhouse gases is driving global climate change and adversely impacting our ecosystem. Popularizing the traditional renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind energy) can mitigate the problem by cutting down anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which is the major contributor to this global problem. However, the intermittent nature of these energy sources is problematic to reliably power society throughout the year. Therefore, converting CO2 to various value-added chemicals with the aid of …

A Latent Class Analysis Predictive Modeling Approach To Profile Division I Collegiate Athletes For Nutrition And Relative Energy Deficiency In Sport (Red-S) Concern, Morgan Delventhal Jan 2021

A Latent Class Analysis Predictive Modeling Approach To Profile Division I Collegiate Athletes For Nutrition And Relative Energy Deficiency In Sport (Red-S) Concern, Morgan Delventhal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Screening collegiate athletes for nutrition-related concerns and low energy syndromes such as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) provides insight for nutrition care and can lead to necessary referrals in the sports medicine team. Screening may be a part of an athletic department’s protocol, but there is a lack of consensus on a validated tool for this population. The goal of this cross-sectional research was to use a Latent Class Analysis (LCA) predictive modeling approach to determine classes of collegiate athletes who present with nutrition and RED-S concern. LCA is a person-centered approach, intending to uncover subgroups of a population …
