The Impact Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 On The Auditing Profession, Samantha Marie Rayburn Jan 2005

The Impact Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 On The Auditing Profession, Samantha Marie Rayburn

Honors Theses

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was passed in order to restore investor confidence to the market after a series of accounting fiascos. Congress included in this act legislation creating the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to monitor audits conducted on publicly traded companies and made many provisions concerning auditor independence. However, the most controversial part of the legislation was Section 404 which requires an audit of internal controls. The intent of this study was to determine how Sarbanes-Oxley will impact the auditing profession. This was determined through an intense review of the most current articles available on the subject. Lumbee Origins: The Weyanoke-Kearsey Connection, J. Cedric Woods

Southern Anthropologist

To determine the historic Virginia tribe or tribes from which the Lumbee may be descended, I have decided to search the records of North Carolina and Virginia and see where surnames linked to the Lumbee in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries appear. My goal is to see which, if any, have documented ties to specific Virginia Indian communities.

The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis Dec 2003

The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Since the early 1970s rural research and public education programs have been intensified in efforts to improve living conditions and strengthen community life in rural America (Southern Perspectives 2000). During much of the 1990s, the nation, including the rural South, experienced a growing economy, a booming stock market, and declining unemployment rates (Gibbs 2001). However, many serious social problems traditionally associated with the rural South remain to this day (Gibbs 2001). This paper introduces the concept of social exclusion, used extensively in European countries and now part of the European Union's official lexicon. Social exclusion is defined as the process …

The Loss And Persistence Of Black-Owned Farms And Farmland: A Review Of The Research Literature And Its Implications, Jess Gilbert, Gwen Sharp, M. Sindy Felin Dec 2002

The Loss And Persistence Of Black-Owned Farms And Farmland: A Review Of The Research Literature And Its Implications, Jess Gilbert, Gwen Sharp, M. Sindy Felin

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper reviews 115 articles and books published since 1971 that comprise almost all of the scholarly research on black farmers and land loss. It provides a general overview as well as discussion of the benefits of landownership for the black community. Several causes of black land and farm loss are reviewed: forced sales due to "heir property," lack of access to government programs, and continuing racial discrimination by lenders and government agencies. A number of the works cited provide possible ways to slow the loss of black-owned land, including strategies to increase the profitability of individual farms and increased …
