© The Author(s) 2020. Staying current on literature related to antimicrobial stewardship can be challenging given the ever-increasing number of published articles. The Southeastern Research Group Endeavor (SERGE-45) identified antimicrobial stewardship–related peer-reviewed literature that detailed an actionable intervention for 2019. The top 13 publications were selected using a modified Delphi technique. These manuscripts were reviewed to highlight the actionable intervention used by antimicrobial stewardship programs to provide key stewardship literature for teaching and training and to identify potential intervention opportunities within one’s institution.

© 2020 Coriander, Coriandrum Sativum L., is one of the commonest food and medicinal plants in many countries, but its chemical ingredients and pivotal role in anti-inflammatory activity have not been fully explored. The present study aimed to identify new compounds in the fruits of coriander and explore their anti-inflammatory activity. The compounds were isolated by chromatographic seperations and identified using spectroscopic and spectrometric methods. RAW264.7 macrophage cells were used to detect the anti-inflammatory activity of the compounds via Griess assay, western blotting, ELISA, and flow cytometry methods. The study resulted in the discovery of four new compounds, which were …

For the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) strategic engagement is critical to the success of colleges and schools of pharmacy in expanding pharmacy and public health practice, meeting programmatic needs, and fulfilling institutional missions. The 2019-2020 Strategic Engagement Committee was charged with exploring the collaborative relationships colleges and schools have within their state to advance pharmacy practice. More specifically, this committee was tasked to examine those relationships with current state pharmacy and medical associations. This report seeks to provide insights from this work and share recommendations to …

Marine Antithrombotics, Rohini Dwivedi, Vitor H. Pomin Oct 2020

Marine Antithrombotics, Rohini Dwivedi, Vitor H. Pomin

Faculty and Student Publications

Thrombosis remains a prime reason of mortality worldwide. With the available antithrombotic drugs, bleeding remains the major downside of current treatments. This raises a clinical concern for all patients undergoing antithrombotic therapy. Novel antithrombotics from marine sources offer a promising therapeutic alternative to this pathology. However, for any potential new molecule to be introduced as a real alternative to existing drugs, the exhibition of comparable anticoagulant potential with minimal off-target effects must be achieved. The relevance of marine antithrombotics, particularly sulfated polysaccharides, is largely due to their unique mechanisms of action and lack of bleeding. There have been many investigations …

Seasonal Variation In The Chemical Composition And Oxidative Potential Of Pm2.5, Alex Vinson, Allie Sidwell, Oscar Black, Courtney Roper Oct 2020

Seasonal Variation In The Chemical Composition And Oxidative Potential Of Pm2.5, Alex Vinson, Allie Sidwell, Oscar Black, Courtney Roper

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has well-established systemic human health effects due in part to the chemical components associated with these exposures. Oxidative stress is a hypothesized mechanism for the health effects associated with PM2.5 exposures. The oxidative potential of PM2.5 has recently been suggested as a metric that is more indicative of human health effects than the routinely measured PM2.5 concentration. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the oxidative potential and elemental composition of PM2.5 collected at two locations during different seasons. PM2.5 was collected …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Mercury is a toxic element that is dispersed globally through the atmosphere. Accurately measuring airborne mercury concentrations aids understanding of the pollutant’s sources, distribution, cycling, and trends. We deployed MerPAS® passive air samplers (PAS) for ~4 weeks during each season, from spring 2019 to winter 2020, to determine gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) levels at six locations along the northern Gulf of Mexico, where the pollutant is of particular concern due to high mercury wet deposition rates and high concentrations in local seafood. The objective was to (1) evaluate spatial and seasonal …

A Mathematical Framework For Estimating Risk Of Airborne Transmission Of Covid-19 With Application To Face Mask Use And Social Distancing, Rajat Mittal, Charles Meneveau, Wen Wu

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 Author(s). A mathematical model for estimating the risk of airborne transmission of a respiratory infection such as COVID-19 is presented. The model employs basic concepts from fluid dynamics and incorporates the known scope of factors involved in the airborne transmission of such diseases. Simplicity in the mathematical form of the model is by design so that it can serve not only as a common basis for scientific inquiry across disciplinary boundaries but it can also be understandable by a broad audience outside science and academia. The caveats and limitations of the model are discussed in detail. The model …

American Journal of Botany published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of Botanical Society of America Premise: How genetic variation within a species affects phytochemical composition is a fundamental question in botany. The ratio of two specialized metabolites in Cannabis sativa, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), can be grouped into three main classes (THC-type, CBD-type, and intermediate type). We tested a genetic model associating these three groups with functional and nonfunctional alleles of the cannabidiolic acid synthase gene (CBDAS). Methods: We characterized cannabinoid content and assayed CBDAS genotypes of >300 feral C. sativa plants in Minnesota, …

Delta Directions: Publications

The Center for Population Studies (CPS) at the University of Mississippi (UM) has partnered with the Maddox Foundation (Hernando, MS) and the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi (CFNM) to explore changes in communities across an 11-county region as a way to identify funding priorities designed to address challenges and build upon assets in the region. With a grant from the Maddox Foundation, the CFNM launched FEED Northwest Mississippi to provide emergency funding for area food pantries, especially ones located in rural areas (CFNM 2020). This initiative has now expanded with a host of additional contributors to the FEED Fund. Results …

Well-Being Among Older Adults In Mississippi: Exploring Differences Between Metropolitan, Micropolitan, And Noncore Rural Settings, Carolyn E. Adams-Price, Joshua J. Turner, Margaret Ralston

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

It is a common belief that older adults in rural areas have high subjective well-being, despite often experiencing greater poverty and having access to fewer resources than older adults who live in urban areas, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the “rural-urban paradox.” However, research does not consistently find high well-being in rural areas, which might be due to research not distinguishing between very rural and semi-rural (or small town) settings. This study compares the subjective well-being of older adults in micropolitan and noncore counties with the well-being of older adults in metropolitan areas in Mississippi (n = 659). Preliminary …
