Incident Light And Morphology Determine Coral Productivity Along A Shallow To Mesophotic Depth Gradient, Michael P. Lesser, Marc Slattery, Curtis D. Mobley
Faculty and Student Publications
While the effects of irradiance on coral productivity are well known, corals along a shallow to mesophotic depth gradient (10–100 m) experience incident irradiances determined by the optical properties of the water column, coral morphology, and reef topography. Modeling of productivity (i.e., carbon fixation) using empirical data shows that hemispherical colonies photosynthetically fix significantly greater amounts of carbon across all depths, and throughout the day, compared with plating and branching morphologies. In addition, topography (i.e., substrate angle) further influences the rate of productivity of corals but does not change the hierarchy of coral morphologies relative to productivity. The differences in …

A series of dietary flavonoid acacetin 7-O-methyl ether derivatives were computationally designed aiming to improve the selectivity and potency profiles against monoamine oxidase (MAO) B. The designed compounds were evaluated for their potential to inhibit human MAO-A and-B. Compounds 1c, 2c, 3c, and 4c were the most potent with a Ki of 37 to 68 nM against MAO-B. Compounds 1c–4c displayed more than a thousand-fold selectivity index towards MAO-B compared with MAO-A. Moreover, compounds 1c and 2c showed reversible inhibition of MAO-B. These results provide a basis for further studies on the potential application of these modified flavonoids for the …

Sequentialdynamics Of Stearoyl-Coa Desaturase-1(Scd1)/Ligand Binding And Unbinding Mechanism: A Computational Study, Anna B. Petroff, Rebecca L. Weir, Charles R. Yates, Joseph D. Ng

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1 or delta-9 desaturase, D9D) is a key metabolic protein that modulates cellular inflammation and stress, but overactivity of SCD1 is associated with diseases, including cancer and metabolic syndrome. This transmembrane endoplasmic reticulum protein converts saturated fatty acids into monounsaturated fatty acids, primarily stearoyl-CoA into oleoyl- CoA, which are critical products for energy metabolism and membrane composition. The present computational molecular dynamics study characterizes the molecular dynamics of SCD1 with substrate, product, and as an apoprotein. The modeling of SCD1:fatty acid interactions suggests that: (1) SCD1:CoA moiety interactions open the substrate-binding tunnel, (2) SCD1 stabilizes a substrate conformation …

This study was designed to develop orally disintegrating/sustained-release praziquantel (PZQ) tablets using the hot-melt extrusion (HME) technique and direct compression, and subse-quently evaluate their release in in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetics. For the extrusion process, hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS)-LG was the carrier of pure PZQ, with a standard screw configuration used at an extrusion temperature of 140◦ C and a screw rotation speed of 100 rpm. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were performed to characterize the extru-date. Orally disintegrating/sustained-release praziquantel tablets (PZQ ODSRTs) were prepared by direct compression …

Structural And Kinetic Analyses Of Holothurian Sulfated Glycans Suggest Potential Treatment For Sars-Cov-2 Infection, Rohini Dwivedi, Priyanka Samanta, Poonam Sharma, Fuming Zhang
Faculty and Student Publications
Certain sulfated glycans, including those from marine sources, can show potential effects against SARS-CoV-2. Here, a new fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FucCS) from the sea cucumber Pentacta pygmaea (PpFucCS) (MW ∼10.60 kDa) was isolated and structurally characterized by NMR. PpFucCS is composed of {→3)-β-GalNAcX-(1→4)-β-GlcA-[(3→1)Y]- (1→}, where X = 4S (80%), 6S (10%) or nonsulfated (10%), Y = α- Fuc2,4S (40%), α-Fuc2,4S-(1→4)-α-Fuc (30%), or α-Fuc4S (30%), and S = SO3-. The anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of PpFucCS and those of the FucCS and sulfated fucan isolated from Isostichopus badionotus (IbFucCS and IbSF) were compared with that of heparin. IC50 values demonstrated the activity of …

Wastewater treatment systems collect and treat sewage that includes microplastics (MPs). However, we are not aware of any studies on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs), which serve small communities worldwide. Here, we characterized MPs (~45 µm–5 mm) in an aerated WSP serving ~500 houses and an adjacent lake. Putative MPs were most abundant in duckweed (Lemna minor) and sludge (75 ± 22 and 12.8 ± 3.1 particles/g, respectively: ±1 standard deviation (SD), n = 6, dry weight). In the water, average concentrations (particles/L ± 1 SD, n = 6) were highest in the pond …

The Use Of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (Dbt) Techniques Creatively In The Treatment Of Perinatal Mood And Anxiety Disorders, Rosanne Nunnery, Missy Fauser, Elizabeth Hatchuel, Mary Jones
Journal of Counseling Research and Practice
Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) is a serious condition impacting up to 21 percent of woman after the birth of a child (Byrnes, 2018). Jane, a 32-year-old female presented for treatment for anxiety, depression and mood disturbance (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and in need of feeling more connected to her baby and her life. The use of creative techniques including mindfulness, distress tolerance activity, emotion regulation, and interpersonal skills (Linehan, 2015, 2016) were implemented. The use of these skills can be added to the repertoire of practice of a mental health counselor working with clients with …

Counseling Adolescents Aging Out Of Foster Care: A Neglected And Underserved Population, Taylor Tertocha-Ubelhor, Bryan R. Russ
Journal of Counseling Research and Practice
The high prevalence of youth aging out of the foster care system and the numerous poor outcomes they experience during the transition to emerging adulthood has been well documented. Although addressing the complex needs and concerns of this distinct population can be difficult, mental health counselors maintain the philosophical tenants and training strengths necessary to successfully serve youth aging out of foster care. This article aims to provide counselors with the historical context, developmental framework, and specific challenges needed to better understand this population, as well as suggested counseling implications to address their unique needs by reviewing relevant literature.

On Seeking Help: Social Reactions Experienced By Sexual Violence Survivors In The Indian Diaspora, Bagmi Das
Journal of Counseling Research and Practice
Sexual violence trauma counseling should be informed by the intersections of a survivor’s identity. This research focused on the social reactions experienced by survivors of sexual violence from the Indian diaspora. This study used quantitative survey research methods and correlational analysis as well as descriptive statistics to understand the social reactions that survivors received from informal supports and formal supports. Significant results, implications for counselors, and future research recommendations are discussed.
