Closing The Opportunity Gap In Mathematics Education, Candies Nicole Winfun-Cook
Closing The Opportunity Gap In Mathematics Education, Candies Nicole Winfun-Cook
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shifting our attention from the achievement gap (standardized test results) to the opportunity gap (unequal opportunities and experiences among students of differing socioeconomic and racial backgrounds) is necessary to shrink gaps in the American educational system. Although previous studies have focused on the achievement gap in terms of students’ success on standardized tests, there has been limited research on the missed opportunities experienced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in high school mathematics classrooms. This qualitative study revealed the lived experiences of BIPOC students as participating in college and career mathematics readiness activities in a single high school …

She Owns It: A Study Of White Women Landowners, Hannah Bullock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Southeast Missouri is home to some of the nation's most valuable farmland per acre on average. Just twenty-four percent of this agricultural land is in possession of female landowners. This study investigates the experiences of these female producers using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping in order to understand their decision making process and the barriers that they are confronted with in their social field, as well as their relationship to capital, as women in agriculture. The findings of this study can serve as a needs assessment for this community and can be used to develop solutions that can help this community achieve …
Naloxone Accessibility Across Mississippi, Emily Gravlee
Naloxone Accessibility Across Mississippi, Emily Gravlee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Objectives
Despite widespread standing orders allowing pharmacies to dispense naloxone under protocol or without a prescription, there is substantial variation in naloxone availability and cost geographically. This study geospatially assessed naloxone availability and cost across community pharmacies within Mississippi. Additionally, this study examined the association of county-level characteristics, including rurality, race, household income, overdose numbers, and percent uninsured, with naloxone availability. This study aims to inform health policymakers about effectiveness of current naloxone standing orders, and to guide potential interventions for improving naloxone accessibility at the community-level.
Methods
This study was a “mystery shopper” telephone census of naloxone availability and …

Using Adaptive-Choice Based Conjoint Analysis To Explore Attributes Important In Performance For Division 1 College Football Players, Michaela Marie Slatniske
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interdisciplinary teams are essential in the care of collegiate athletes. However, interdisciplinary teams may be composed of members who place utility in key athletic attributes differently. To better understand the differences in utilities various members place on athletic attributes, this study explored the relative importance of attributes in wide receivers (WR), and part-worth utilizes among levels of an attribute through an Adaptive Choice Based Conjoint (ACBC) study. Interdisciplinary team member involved in the care of college football players, including athletic trainers (ATs), ball coaches (BCs), strength and conditioning coaches (S&C), and sports dietitians (SN) were identified from 131 D1 collegiate …
On Airborne Tire Wear Particles Along Roads, Labeling Microplastics With Fluorescent Dyes, Microplastics In Wastewater Treatment Plant And Beach Sand, And Microplastic-Mercury Affinity, Zhiqiang Gao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microplastics (MPs) with sizes of 1 μm to 5 mm that are intentional manufactured or result from fragmentation of large plastic debris are widely recognized as a global pollutant. The distributions and concentrations of MPs in environmental and biological systems as well as their toxicity are not well understood. This dissertation details five studies providing new insight and methods on (1) the occurrence and characteristics of airborne tire wear particles (TWPs) along roads, (2) manufacturing and labeling of MPs with fluorescent dyes, (3) fate of MPs in a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at the University of Mississippi, (4) distribution …

Interval Delivery Of 5ht2a Agonists Using Multilayered Polymeric Films, Mehjabeen Hossain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is an urgent unmet medical need to develop therapeutic options for the ~50% of depression patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression, which is difficult to treat with existing psycho- and pharmaco-therapeutic options. Classical psychedelics, such as the 5HT2A agonists, have re-emerged as a treatment paradigm for depression. Recent clinical trials highlight the potential effectiveness of 5HT2A agonists to improve mood and psychotherapeutic growth in treatment-resistant depression patients, even in those who have failed a median of four previous medications in their lifetime. Moreover, microdosing could be a promising way to achieve long-term alleviation of depression symptoms without a hallucinogenic experience. …

An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie
An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This article, based on the 2021 Southern Rural Sociological Association (SRSA) Presidential Address, assesses the dimensions, causes of, and solutions to poverty. It finds that the definition of poverty varies based on the criteria used, and even by which agency or institution is defining it. It also finds that poverty indices vary by state and by county. For instance, in selected SRSA states, Virginia has the lowest poverty rate and Mississippi has the highest poverty rate. There are several causes of poverty, some of which are lower levels of education, lower levels of health, unemployment, lack of livable wages, and …

Ionic Liquid-Solvated Chitosan Nanoparticles As A Novel Method Of Treating Atopic Dermatitis, Leslie Bell
Ionic Liquid-Solvated Chitosan Nanoparticles As A Novel Method Of Treating Atopic Dermatitis, Leslie Bell
Honors Theses
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is an inflammatory skin disease resulting in dry, red, and itchy skin that affects almost 20% of the population of the Western world. This disease creates a physical, emotional, as well as financial burden on those affected, as well as their families. Current treatment options are only somewhat effective, and do not have a long duration of release and therefore efficiency. Furthermore, treatment plans involving corticosteroids need to be closely regulated to monitor side effects such as skin thinning. Other options include topical tacrolimus, emollients, and oral antihistamines, each with varied side effects. This project is …

Pragmatic Deficits In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Paige Kessler
Honors Theses
Background: Most studies have found pragmatic language skills to be poorer in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) populations, but there is no conclusive evidence.
Aim: Our aim was to conduct a meta-analysis of pragmatic language abilities in ADHD populations to more definitively demonstrate the extent of pragmatic language deficits in these populations as compared to typically developing (TD) populations.
Methods and procedures: Journal articles were identified using the search terms ((attention deficit) OR (adhd)) AND (pragmatics). Identified studies were screened and reviewed for inclusion criteria, descriptive information, and outcome variables. A meta-analysis was conducted, and individual effect sizes and overall effect size …
What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins
What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins
Study the South
"Social isolation is both a phrase and an experience that has defined the past year in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Jared Ragland’s ongoing photographic travelogue, What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations on Social Isolation in Alabama, expressly evokes the loneliness that has characterized this period; solitary subjects inhabit these frames, and many images in the series are devoid of people altogether. One can imagine the photographer, alone, navigating deserted landscapes with only a camera as his companion, documenting the recent ravaging of the public sphere. Yet, while the theme is certainly au courant, What …
