Testing Emotion Regulation As A Functional Transdiagnostic Construct, Enoch Sackey
Testing Emotion Regulation As A Functional Transdiagnostic Construct, Enoch Sackey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The polythetic criteria of the DSM and ICD generate high amount of symptom heterogeneity as there are clusters of symptoms within various diagnostic category that are heuristically similar, resulting in multiple, often confusing, ways of describing sequelae of symptoms presentation. This is because the DSM and ICD classification systems were developed based on the neo-Kraepelinian framework for classifying physical illnesses, which assumes that the underlying architecture of psychopathology, which manifest in disorder symptoms, are distinct and specific. Based on this, the categorical approach to describing psychopathology has been described as purely conceptual artefact with no empirical basis in research or …
Optimizing Exposure For Contamination Ocd: What Happens When Digust Is Specifically Targeted?, Molly E. Wickenhauser
Optimizing Exposure For Contamination Ocd: What Happens When Digust Is Specifically Targeted?, Molly E. Wickenhauser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disgust is a basic emotion with distinct subjective, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral processes that include revulsion, parasympathetic nervous system activity, contamination-specific appraisals, and disease-avoidance behaviors. Pathological disgust responses may contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety-related psychopathology, particularly spider and blood-injection-injury phobias, health anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Evidence-based treatments for these disorders were developed based on theories of fear and anxiety and involve exposure-based cognitive-behavior therapy. However, traditional exposure methods appear to be less effective at achieving habituation to disgust compared to fear and anxiety. Additionally, individuals with elevated disgust and primary contagion concerns seem …

Honors Theses
Are there enough foster parents to meet the needs of our community? Who advocates on behalf of children who are in the custody of the state? What do children in custody need? Prior to this research, the general public was unable to find these answers in a concise and accessible manner. This study explores the community needs of the Lafayette County Foster Care System in Mississippi, through the means of a needs assessment. The assessment involves six interviews with local foster care leaders, collection and analysis of results, and formal recommendations. Findings are organized by both individual interviews and thematic …

Chemical Authentication And Speciation Of Salvia Botanicals: An Investigation Utilizing Gc/Q-Tof And Chemometrics, Joseph Lee, Mei Wang, Jianping Zhao, Bharathi Avula
Faculty and Student Publications
Members of the genus Salvia are used as culinary herbs and are prized for their purported medicinal attributes. Since physiological effects can vary widely between species of Salvia, it is of great importance to accurately identify botanical material to ensure safety for consumers. In the present study, an in-depth chemical investigation is performed utilizing GC/Q-ToF combined with chemometrics. Twenty-four authentic plant samples representing five commonly used Salvia species, viz. S. apiana, S. divinorum, S. mellifera, S. miltiorrhiza, and S. officinalis, are analyzed using a GC/Q-ToF technique. High-resolution spectral data are employed to construct a sample class prediction (SCP) model followed …

Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a troublesome pathogen that poses a global threat to public health. Shikonin (SKN) isolated from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (L. erythro-rhizon) possesses a variety of biological activities. This study aims to explore the effect of the combined application of SKN and traditional antibiotics on the vitality of MRSA and the inherent anti-bacterial mechanism of SKN. The synergies between SKN and antibiotics against MRSA and its clinical strain have been demonstrated by the checkerboard assay and the time‐kill assay. The effect of SKN on disrupting the integrity and permeability of bacterial cell membranes was verified by a nucleotide …

Chemical Fingerprinting Profile And Targeted Quantitative Analysis Of Phenolic Compounds From Rooibos Tea (Aspalathus Linearis) And Dietary Supplements Using Uhplc‐Pda‐Ms, Omer I. Fantoukh, Yan Hong Wang, Abidah Parveen, Mohammed F. Hawwal
Faculty and Student Publications
Aspalathus linearis (Burm.f.) R. Dahlgren, commonly known as rooibos tea, was consumed traditionally by the indigenous South African inhabitants as an herbal remedy. Beside antioxidant properties, it displays antiallergic, antispasmodic, and hypoglycemic activities. An ultra‐high-performance liquid chromatography method coupled with photodiode array and mass spectrometry detectors were developed for the determination of 14 phenolic constituents from leaves and stems of A. linearis. The efficient separation was performed within 30 min at a temperature of 30 °C by using C‐18 column as the stationary phase and water/acetonitrile with 0.05% formic acid as the mobile phase. Method validation for linearity, repeatability, limits …

Exploring The Impact Of A Brief Counseling Intervention For Improving Mental Health Factors And Learning Strategies Among College Students At An Hsi, James Ikonomopoulos, Kristopher Garza, Javier Cavazos Vela
Journal of Academic Underperformance
Abstract
This study evaluated a counseling intervention called the University Turn Around Program (U-Turn) for college students experiencing mental health issues and low academic performance. Social Anxiety, Hostility, and Alcohol Use were measured on the CCAPS-34, and Attitude, Information Processing, Selecting Main Ideas, Test Strategies, and Using Academic Resources were measured on the LASSI-3. Paired samples t-tests revealed improvement for each measure (d = 0.45 to 1.09) supporting the U-Turn program’s inclusion in university counseling centers.

Save, Gamble, Or Both? The Relationship Between Premium Bond Sales And Lottery Sales In The United Kingdom, Kaden Seth Grace
Save, Gamble, Or Both? The Relationship Between Premium Bond Sales And Lottery Sales In The United Kingdom, Kaden Seth Grace
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Four out of every ten Americans are unable to pay for an unexpected $400 bill out of their savings accounts. To ameliorate this problem, one policy to incentivize saving is a Prize-Linked Savings Account (PLSA). Unlike a traditional savings account that pays out a consistent rate of return, a PLSA pools the interest on all deposits and distributes the returns in randomly drawn prizes (similar to a lottery). However, PLSAs remain illegal in many areas due to a concern that the introduction of a private or public PLSA could cannibalize revenue from an existing state-sponsored lottery, thus restricting the state’s …
Soul Food And Soul Searching: How The Relationship Between Food In Black Culture And Racialized Beauty Standards Can Lead To Disordered Eating Symptoms In Black Women, Sydni Davis
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Food is an important part of Black culture, expression, and history, but it is often underrepresented in research on eating disorders. Previous research has shown that Black women experience eating disorders comparable to White women when measured using the Questionnaire for Eating Disorder Diagnoses. In light of this, I wanted to know the stories behind women that might exhibit eating disorder symptoms. I used oral histories gathered from three women in my family and autoethnography to amplify the voices of Black women. I found that of my small sample size, 50% felt that they had an unhealthy relationship with food …

Queer Politics In Pre And Post Independence Cameroon Through The Lens Of Weberian Political Authority, Logan Baggett
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Policy in Cameroon, and on the African continent more generally, is often summarily referred to as the result of neopatrimonial authority. This paper rejects the framework of neopatrimonial authority in Cameroon, applying Weberian notions of charismatic authority to trace the development of queer policy from the pre-colonial period to the present. This paper first analyzes the impact of European colonialism on legal language and then investigates the rhetorical defense of this legal language following independence. Since statehood, the presidencies of Ahmadou Ahidjo (1960 - 1982) and Paul Biya (1982 - ) have implemented selective enforcement of inherited legalisms through near …

How Much Further Can Southern Resilience Go?, Abbie-Noel Pittman
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Climate change affects everyone. However, the Southeastern United States is at a higher risk of negative effects. The South is especially vulnerable to climate change not because mitigation will drain resources, but because those resources were never available in the first place. This paper describes the geographic disadvantages of the Southeastern United States and explains how prior institutional inequality will exacerbate those disadvantages for marginalized groups and communities. The South depends on agriculture and tourism economically, both of which are heavily climate dependent. For southerners who already lack resources, the destruction of two main job industries would be detrimental. This …

Anxiety Symptoms Among Extension Professionals' During The Covid-19 Pandemic With The Gad-2, Glenn D. Israel, Colleen E. Gariton, Harsha E. James
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are a common mental health disorder but often remain undetected and undertreated. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Extension professionals have worked hard to address emerging issues that communities face, possibly impacting the amount of anxiety they experience. This study determined the prevalence of anxiety symptoms among Extension professionals in the United States. Participants from 24 states completed a survey containing the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item (GAD-2) screener. Almost one-quarter of Extension professionals had a GAD-2 score greater than three, an indicator of anxiety with a possibility of generalized anxiety disorder, which …

Implications Of Covid-19 Mitigation Policies On Recreational Trail Users: Exploring Antecedents To Physical Distancing On Trails Across The Rural-Urban Continuum, Christopher J. Wynveen, Ingrid Schneider, Deonne Vanderwoude, Taylor Stein, Heather Gibson, Kim Shinew, William Hendricks, Megha Budruk
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions led to a worldwide increase in greenspace use. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encouraged policies including physical distancing and COVID-related signage. However, the extent to which these policies influenced behavior is unknown. To fill this gap, we report on a 2020 observational study at 14 trails across six U.S. states framed within a social-ecological model. Behavioral observations of 8,093 groups assessed compliance rates with infection-mitigation behaviors. Additionally, we noted the presence of COVID-related signs, the days between the observation and stay-at-home order start date, the setting (i.e., urban, suburban, and …
