Leveraging The Influence Of Power Grid Links In Renewable Energy Power Generation, Wei Wang, Haibo Wang, Bahram Alidaee, Jun Huang, Huijun Yang Jan 2022

Leveraging The Influence Of Power Grid Links In Renewable Energy Power Generation, Wei Wang, Haibo Wang, Bahram Alidaee, Jun Huang, Huijun Yang

Faculty and Student Publications

Smart grid construction provides the basic conditions for grid connection of renewable energy power generation. However, the grid connection of large-scale intermittent renewable energy sources increases the complexity of operational control of power systems. With the increase in intermittent renewable energy grid connections, distribution system operators must optimize and integrate these new participants to ensure the flexibility and stability of smart grids. Dividing the smart grid into logical clusters helps to overcome the problems caused by intermittent renewable energy grid connections. In this study, we propose a 2-step modeling approach that includes both link and leverage analyses to detect the …

Good Love Is Black: Stories On Black Queer Living In The American South, Danielle Buckingham Jan 2022

Good Love Is Black: Stories On Black Queer Living In The American South, Danielle Buckingham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Black Queer and Trans folks conjure love in their lives, by any means necessary, even in the face of terror. This is what has been at the root of their survival against the anti-Blackness and heterosexism that permeates the nation. Good Love Is Black, highlights their journeys navigating multiple marginalized identities, particularly in the American South. For this project, I spoke with folks who are natives of or currently residing in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Texas, and Kentucky. This written thesis accompanies a narrative podcast that explores the ways in which their Black, Queer, and Southern Identity informs how they …

"How It Was Made", Bethany Fitts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a meta-autoethnography describing the researcher’s unfocused, rhizomatic research process throughout the COVID19 pandemic. Themes explored are the COVID19 pandemic, family, death, climate change, queer love, represenation, academia, genre, and religion. The study shows how multiple scales of grief arise during the research process. I locate this method within postcolonial theory of autoethnography that seeks to diversify structures within the academic genre.

Casting The Ballot: An Analysis Of Voting Method Prefernces From 2012 – 2020, Bailey Rose Griffin Jan 2022

Casting The Ballot: An Analysis Of Voting Method Prefernces From 2012 – 2020, Bailey Rose Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Voting is an important aspect of a democracy because it allows people get involved in the political world and it is one of the relatively cheapest ways to do with no monetary costs. Moreover, voting helps keep elected officials accountable. Over the years there have been barriers to disenfranchise groups but over the years they have been abolished. Up to date, there are four voting methods a voter could do: in-person on Election Day, in-person prior to Election Day, absentee ballots, and all-mail ballots. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic swept through the United States changed all aspects of life, including …

Linguistic Landscape-Economics, Marta Galindo Parra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is the result of studies in two fields, the linguistic landscape (LL) and the economics of language (EL), and the relationship between them. In particular, this study concentrates on: (1) the analysis of the language used in public signs in two specific areas in the southern U.S., Ybor City and West Tampa, both located in the City of Tampa, Florida; and (2) the evaluation of the language skills and labor market performance of the agency involved in the public signs. The literature review focuses on the theories and methodologies more commonly used in previous LL research and language …

Fugitivity, Confinement, And The Afterlife Of Slavery In Contemporary African American Migration Narratives, Juyoun Jang Jan 2022

Fugitivity, Confinement, And The Afterlife Of Slavery In Contemporary African American Migration Narratives, Juyoun Jang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates a post-Civil Rights-era literary history of fugitive slave figures and their fugitive acts amid temporal and spatial confinement as constituting a tradition of contemporary African American migration narratives. The point of departure for this project is the Prologue of Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, where the unnamed Black narrator endures a forced migration to New York, but also invites readers to witness his performance of hibernation in an underground space in a building reserved for white tenants. On the one hand, the low, claustrophobic, and dark space of the narrator’s basement signifies Black migrants’ historical subjection to …

"The Wild Asleep": A Cultural And Environmental History Of Ramps, Catherine Jessee Jan 2022

"The Wild Asleep": A Cultural And Environmental History Of Ramps, Catherine Jessee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ramps, wild onions, or allium tricoccum are a variety of spring ephemeral, or a flowering plant that emerges for a brief period every spring. In working through stereotypical ideas about Appalachian regional identity, I interpret the environmental history of this plant. Incorporating memory, oral histories, and folklore, this thesis complicates wider conceptions of home, community, and boundary. Tapping into an archive of ramps knowledge as it is created, I ask, what can the future of ramps tell us about place, space, and belonging?

The Resilience Of Black Love, Janeth Jackson Jan 2022

The Resilience Of Black Love, Janeth Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For countless years, a network of laws, codes, systemic structures, and malicious forces have been established to eradicate Black love. Despite such evils, African Americans have been steadfast in their love for one another. In the American South, the evidence of that steadfastness is the strongest. States like Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana all had racist systems such as slavery, Jim Crow, Black Codes, and lynching that African Americans faced daily. And within each structure, there were methods employed to separate Black couples. Some historical texts have examined the plight of African American couples’ fight against such systems. However, few studies …

Unearthing The Old South/West: Histories Of Racial Capitalism In Modernist Border Narratives, Bailey Moorhead Jan 2022

Unearthing The Old South/West: Histories Of Racial Capitalism In Modernist Border Narratives, Bailey Moorhead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

“Unearthing the Old South/West” examines four works of modernist historical fiction which accentuate competing regimes of racial capitalism through South/Western border settings. Following the trend in New Southern and Western Studies to break with exceptionalist and essentialist considerations of these regions, my analysis challenges white-centric narratives of the U.S. South and West and questions their popular portrayals as culturally distinct spaces. Viewing the U.S. as a site of ongoing settler colonialism, imperialist conquest, and international trade reliant upon labor exploitation, I develop the idea that South/Western borders form a microcosm for larger structures of systemic oppression throughout the nation by …

Transforming Place: The Socio-Environmental Afterlives Of Tellico, Cheyenne Bennett Jan 2022

Transforming Place: The Socio-Environmental Afterlives Of Tellico, Cheyenne Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis assesses the socio-environmental afterlives of the Tellico Dam controversy that affected citizens of Loudon, Blount, and Monroe Counties in East Tennessee. The central goal is to understand the impacts that development-induced displacement and resettlement had on communities following dam construction. The people from the aforementioned counties witnessed the landscape transform from one that had an abundance of farmland to an area where the farmland is diminished due to the creation of the dam, the reservoir, and the waterfront properties that surround the reservoir. This project analyzes these post-Tellico Dam impacts in terms of waterfront property development, gentrification, land …

An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie Dec 2021

An Examination Of Poverty: Dimensions, Causes, And Solutions, David Nii O. Tackie

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This article, based on the 2021 Southern Rural Sociological Association (SRSA) Presidential Address, assesses the dimensions, causes of, and solutions to poverty. It finds that the definition of poverty varies based on the criteria used, and even by which agency or institution is defining it. It also finds that poverty indices vary by state and by county. For instance, in selected SRSA states, Virginia has the lowest poverty rate and Mississippi has the highest poverty rate. There are several causes of poverty, some of which are lower levels of education, lower levels of health, unemployment, lack of livable wages, and …

Plant Extract Of Limonium Gmelinii Attenuates Oxidative Responses In Neurons, Astrocytes, And Cerebral Endothelial Cells In Vitro And Improves Motor Functions Of Rats After Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion, Tulendy Nurkenov, Andrey Tsoy, Farkhad Olzhayev, Elvira Abzhanova

Faculty and Student Publications

There are numerous publications demonstrating that plant polyphenols can reduce oxi-dative stress and inflammatory processes in the brain. In the present study we have investigated the neuroprotective effect of plant extract isolated from the roots of L. gmelinii since it contains a rich source of polyphenols and other biologically active compounds. We have applied an oxidative and inflammatory model induced by NMDA, H2O2, and TNF‐α in human primary neurons and astrocytes, and mouse cerebral endothelial cell (CECs) line in vitro. The levels of ROS generation, NADPH oxidase activation, P‐selectin expression, and activity of ERK1/2 were evaluated by quan-titative immunofluorescence analysis, …

Syllabus: Religion, Gender, And Sexuality (Fall 2021), Amy Mcdowell

Course Events, Presentations, and Syllabi

Fall 2021 course syllabus for SOC 619 (Sociology): Religion, Gender, and Sexuality

Course description: Religion looms large in debates over gender and sexuality in U.S. society. It is difficult to discuss LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, feminism, or reproductive rights without also addressing religion. This course takes the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality seriously and asks: How does religion help make gender and sexual norms feel moral and true? Is religion always oppressive to gender and sexual outlaws? How does religion structure LGBTQ+ lives and histories in conservative Christian contexts like Mississippi? This course also gives significant time and attention …
