Disruption To Ems Service During Flood Scenarios In Western North Carolina, Julia Cardwell Nov 2022

Disruption To Ems Service During Flood Scenarios In Western North Carolina, Julia Cardwell

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Given that the intensity and frequency of flood events will increase under climate change scenarios, the ability to model potential impacts, such as those to healthcare access, will become increasingly important. This study analyzes EMS response time under both a historical (Tropical Storm Fred in August 2021) and a modeled flood event (FEMA’s 100-yr floodplain) in western North Carolina, a predominantly rural area. The results indicate that network disruption during flood events is a concern in the study area, and while the historical event produced moderate disruption, the 100-yr event produced major disruptions throughout the study area. This research emphasizes …

Bridging The Divide: Connecting Urban And Rural Care Through The Right! From The Start Initiative, Tess Lefmann, Sannie Snell, Mobolaji E. Famuyide, Sushmitha Inguva, John J. Green

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Disparities in health and barriers to healthcare are prominent in rural areas, particularly in the Delta region of Mississippi where high rates of premature births, infant mortality, low weight births, and maternal mortality exacerbate the dearth of access to care. Extending the reach of healthcare providers and services between urban and rural areas is of utmost importance in improving the landscape of maternal and child health. Community health workers (CHWs), trusted individuals in the community, play a valuable role in this through social support. This research note delineates the importance of community health workers as connectors in establishing a trusted …

Sustaining The Individual In The Collective: A Kantian Perspective For A Sustainable World, Zachary Vereb Sep 2022

Sustaining The Individual In The Collective: A Kantian Perspective For A Sustainable World, Zachary Vereb

Faculty and Student Publications

Individualist normative theories appear inadequate for the complex moral challenges of climate change. In climate ethics, this is especially notable with the relative marginalization of Kant. I argue that Kant's philosophy, understood through its historical and cosmopolitan dimensions, has untapped potential for the climate crisis. First, I situate Kant in climate ethics and evaluate his marginalization due to perceived individualism, interiority and anthropocentrism. Then, I explore aspects of Kant's historical and cosmopolitan writings, which present a global, future-orientated picture of humanity. Ultimately, Kant's philosophy offers a unique take on the climate deadlock capable of sustaining the individual in the collective.

An Ethnic Security Dilemma In Bosnia-Herzegovina: Civic Pride And Civics Education, Matthew Becker Sep 2022

An Ethnic Security Dilemma In Bosnia-Herzegovina: Civic Pride And Civics Education, Matthew Becker

Faculty and Student Publications

This article attempts to explore the link between education and democracy. Education is supposed to serve as a unifying factor and socialization agent among citizens of a state; teaching them who they are and what their country expects of them. The role of the educational system is important for the state in building a civic identity and patriotism among students. In Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), students complete a “Democracy and Human Rights” civics education course in primary and secondary schools; however, the current pedagogical implementation of instilling a civic identity is low, with little attention paid to civic identity promotion. This article …

Mississippi Modernism: The River Valley And Race In American Culture, 1892-1945, William C. Palmer Aug 2022

Mississippi Modernism: The River Valley And Race In American Culture, 1892-1945, William C. Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi Modernism looks to the Mississippi River Valley of the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first few decades of the twentieth century to analyze the ways individuals expressed and determined their experience in the changing world. By engaging with theories of modernity from Marshall Berman and the Black modernism of Houston A. Baker, Jr. this work proposes the Mississippi watershed as a region where individuals indulge in the processes of modernism remaking the environments, both urban and rural, surrounding them. By thinking about the “dry” and “wet” valleys envisioned by European settlers as Christopher Morris terms it, …

Bridging Souths: Interdisciplinarity And Knowledge Production In Southern Studies, Matthew David Streets Aug 2022

Bridging Souths: Interdisciplinarity And Knowledge Production In Southern Studies, Matthew David Streets

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the viability of southern studies, a regional studies project on the study of the U.S. South, as an academic field of study and institutionalized site of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary knowledge production. Southern studies has undergone numerous turns and paradigm shifts since its institutionalization in the 1970s. These ontological, epistemological, and methodological developments have reoriented the objectives of interdisciplinary knowledge production. Despite the present permeability of disciplinary boundaries, the institutional structure and its racial, capitalist, and disciplinary hierarchies hinder communication and collaboration across disciplines and fields and between the “ivory tower” and “real world.” Understanding the impact …

Choral Music Teacher Educators' Practices: Preparing Undergraduates To Teach World Choral Music, Stellah Mbugua

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how undergraduate choral music teacher educators (MTEs) are including world choral music pedagogy (WCMP) in choral music education courses. Participants of this study were faculty of colleges and universities in the Southern Region of the United States of America (USA), as defined by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Participants either held a choral music education position or teach choral music education courses. A survey design was used to collect data for this descriptive study. The research questions that informed this study focused on the extent of the inclusion of WCMP in …

Bland Treacherous Water: Diluvial Epistemologies In Flood Narratives Of The Us South Since 1927, Sara Stephens Loomis Aug 2022

Bland Treacherous Water: Diluvial Epistemologies In Flood Narratives Of The Us South Since 1927, Sara Stephens Loomis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between southern flood narratives and the epistemological changes wrought by the Anthropocene epoch in the past hundred years. It participates in the turns toward ecocriticism and environmental justice within 21st-century southern studies, situating the US South as a testing ground for ecosystem epistemologies shaped by overabundant water. An expansion of Steve Mentz’s call for a blue humanities that shifts focus from land to sea, Bland Treacherous Water explores what happens to Anthropocene subjects’ ways of knowing their environments when waterways inundate the land itself. By investigating works by William Faulkner, James Dickey, Cormac McCarthy, Marilou …

Regional Variation In Gravel-Based Lithic Economies: Archaeological Investigations At Stark Farm (22ok778) And Grand Village (22ad501), Matthew H. Perry Aug 2022

Regional Variation In Gravel-Based Lithic Economies: Archaeological Investigations At Stark Farm (22ok778) And Grand Village (22ad501), Matthew H. Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lithic economies of the Late Mississippian and Early Contact periods have in the past been characterized as simple and lacking complexities, however this is a flawed assumption (Binford 1980:10). This thesis aims to highlight the variations and complexities that existed in gravel-based lithic economies exploring how these variations present themselves in the archaeological record. These variations will be examined through several quantitative methods including mass, cortex, flake and biface analysis. I will also use historical accounts and archaeological reports to place these assemblages in the Late Mississippian and Early Contact periods. This research compares the gravel-based lithic assemblages from …

The Hollidays In Mississippi: A Documentary Project About Queer Family, Legacy, And Community Struggle, Christina Alison Huff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This MFA thesis accompanies a short documentary film encompassing a “passing of the torch” story between Eric White (GoDiva Holliday) and his drag daughter, Justin Tyler (DeePression Holliday.) After twenty years of performing and directing drag shows in Tupelo, MS, White makes the decision to let go of his passion and focus on himself. He ensures that his drag daughter, Holbrook, carries on the legacy of creating LGTBQ spaces in the conservative South. This story will also touch on the familial relationship between the two drag performers who both grew up in small-town Mississippi but in different eras. The work …
