© AlphaMed Press 2019 Background: Polypharmacy (PP) and potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) are highly prevalent in older adults with cancer. This study systematically reviews the associations of PP and/or PIM with outcomes and, through a meta-analysis, obtains estimates of postoperative outcomes associated with PP in this population. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Register of Clinical Trials using standardized terms for concepts of PP, PIM, and cancer. Eligible studies included cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, meta-analyses, and clinical trials which examined outcomes associated with PP and/or PIM and included older adults with cancer. A random …

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Yoga Interventions On Fifth-Grade Students’ Perceived Stress And Anxiety, Alicia Cooper Stapp, Ashley Berry Lambert
Faculty and Student Publications
© IEJEE. With rising pressure and an increase in expected academic performance in schools across the United States, students are experiencing higher levels of stress than ever before. To address this issue, the present study examined the impact of mindfulness-based yoga interventions on fifth-grade students’ perceived stress and anxiety levels through a mixed methods research approach. Quantitative data were collected from students through a pre-and post-questionnaire while qualitative data were garnered through an interview with the classroom teacher. Findings revealed that following the intervention period, students reported a decrease in stress levels (9.29%) and a slight increase in anxiety levels …

© 2020, Department of General Linguistics, Stellenbosch University. All rights reserved. This article reports on research which examined whether the use of mobile phone text messaging is responsible for the reported presence of abbreviations in students’ written work at the University of Benin. I argue that the frequent use of short messaging service (SMS) abbreviations may not be attributed only to the reported increase in the use of abbreviations in the written work of students. Other factors, such as the purpose of the writing and the students’ state of mind, might also be determinants of whether students use abbreviations or …

Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy
Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy
Faculty and Student Publications
This study investigates whether L2 Mandarin learners can generalize experience with Mandarin tones to unfamiliar tones (i.e., Thai). Three language groups-L1 English/L2 Mandarin learners (n=18), L1 Mandarin speakers (n=30), L1 monolingual English speakers (n=23)-were tested on the perception of unfamiliar Thai tones on ABX tasks. L2 Mandarin learners and L1 Mandarin speakers perceived Thai tones more accurately than L1 English non-learners. Mandarin learners L1 speakers showed priming on Mandarin tones on a lexical decision task with repetition priming, suggesting L2 tones had been encoded within lexical representations of L2 Mandarin words. However, results must be interpreted cautiously, with an absence …

On Southern Soil: The Art And Ecology Of Racial Uplift, 1895-1950, Laura Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a critical and material reappraisal of Southern land, by examining the relationship between soil and 20th century black modernity in the United States. Interacting with theories of black modernism laid out by scholars such as Houston A. Baker, as well as recent texts which examine the relationship between African Americans and the natural world, including Kimberly Smith's African American Environmental Thought: Foundations (2007) and Monica M. White’s Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement (2018), On Southern Soil considers the complex relationship between agriculture and the pursuit of African American citizenship in the first half …

Hayek And Natural Law: Grounding Social Institutions In Human Action And Morals, Ethan Davis
Hayek And Natural Law: Grounding Social Institutions In Human Action And Morals, Ethan Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Friederich Hayek’s The Constitution of Liberty provides us with a theory of freedom, one that seeks to minimize coercion in the name of progress. The concept of progress is the grounding for Hayek’s entire theory. It ultimately provides the value of both liberty and those things which derive their value by preserving, promoting, and constituting liberty, such as rights and laws more generally. The problem is that progress is an ill-defined concept because Hayek’s descriptions of it are so vague that it cannot provide any satisfying explanation of why progress itself is desirable and, consequently, why we should promote liberty …

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is one of the premiere affiliate conferences of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Sports of all kinds have, for some time, engaged fans in multiple ways with the advent of social media enabling new forms of engagement. One of the most popular social media platforms for fan engagement is Twitter. This study is one of the first to explore how SEC teams use Twitter to interact with fans. After downloading Twitter data from all SEC baseball and football accounts, engagement was established. Engagement was defined as retweets plus favorites. With engagement defined and used as …
Service-Learning, Comcore, And The Secondary English Classroom: A Mixed Methods Study, Kimual Snow
Service-Learning, Comcore, And The Secondary English Classroom: A Mixed Methods Study, Kimual Snow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT The prevalence of high-stakes, standardized testing, along with the emergence of the ComCore State Standards has decreased teachers’ capacity to establish and implement authentic learning opportunities for students in 21st century secondary English classroom. In a progressive literacy environment, teachers must commit to real-world learning that allows students to navigate complex informational texts without sacrificing high curriculum standards. A number of qualitative studies reveal how service-learning has been used in various classrooms to address deficiencies in student motivation and engagement, which in turn, sought to increase students’ academic outcomes. However, few provide the quantitative evidence that administrators want to …

The Charger: A Case Study Of Leadership Decisions And The Oxford High School Student Newspaper, R. J. Morgan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This case study uses qualitative interviews with administrators, advisers, former editors, and others, along with researcher observations and more than 50 years of archival documents to construct a comprehensive portrait of the history, successes, and challenges of the student newspaper program at Oxford High School, and how administrative decision making has affected that success and vice versa. The OHS student newspaper, called the Charger since the late 1980s, has consistently ranked at or near the top of the best high school newspapers in Mississippi and has at times been named one of the top high school newspapers in the nation. …

Labor In The Field Is Much Changed: The Chickasaws And The Civilization Plan, 1790-1837, Jeffrey D. Washburn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Between 1790 and 1840, the U.S. federal government instituted its so-called “civilization plan,” which encouraged Southern Indians to embrace republican values, patriarchy, yeoman farming, and individual property rights. The policies included in the civilization plan were highly influential, as the Native South transitioned from an economy built on the deerskin trade into one of cottage industries, plow-based agriculture, and ranching. Through a detailed examination of one Southern Indian community, the Chickasaws, my dissertation defines the civilization plan in terms of the ideology that the federal government envisioned and how the plan was interpreted on the ground level. My work centers …
Building Efficacy In Early-Career Teachers: An Applied Research Study On The Role Of Professional Development On Teacher Efficacy, Duncan Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teacher efficacy is closely connected to student achievement and teacher retention. The applied research explored how rethinking certain aspects of professional development would impact the efficacy of the teachers in an upper elementary building. The research program included two distinct components. School administrators redesigned after school professional development sessions in order to allow teachers to facilitate their own learning and lead sessions on areas of interest. The second component was a structural model that alloearly-career educators to visit other classrooms. Both of the components shosome promise for increasing teachers’ sense of efficacy, but the response from the after-school sessions was …
A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson
A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis connects late nineteenth-century southern Democrat and former Confederate L.Q.C. Lamar to the status politics of the Northeastern “small imperialist elite.” Moreover, this work traces Senator, Secretary of the Interior, and Associate Justice Lamar’s legacies in American political thought, such as a regional memorialization and the example of his national influence through the policies of President Theodore Roosevelt specifically. Though he inspired generations of politicians with varying views, Lamar himself maintained a strict constructionist political philosophy and worked for home rule throughout his career. Scholars argue for Lamar as a moderate symbol of national reconciliation due to his eulogy …
