A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of The 2008 American Presidential Election, Willow Beverly Nero Jan 2009

A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of The 2008 American Presidential Election, Willow Beverly Nero

Honors Theses

Agenda-setting theory, based on the idea that journalism has a strong correlation to audience opinion and evaluation of issue salience, shows the unportance of how the media present the news. Naturally, media values vary across cultures, wherein some news outlets serve only to inform and others approach news through partisan positions or evaluative tactics. Especially during a time of media upset in the United States, it is important to examine U.S. media values and those of other cultures. This thesis looks at some of the dominant and documented differences in newspaper reporting in France and the United States, using Patterson’s …

Synergy, Meshworks, And The Nature Of Anthropology: A Teaching Perspective, Robert Shanafelt Oct 2008

Synergy, Meshworks, And The Nature Of Anthropology: A Teaching Perspective, Robert Shanafelt

Southern Anthropologist

Textbooks in general anthropology describe the subject as a holistic endeavor with distinct subfields. However, other than paying lip service to the concept of holism, most establish few fundamental links between the biological, social, and linguistic features of the discipline. In this paper I argue that four-field anthropology is best taught not as a set of layered blocks but as a meshwork of interacting layers of complexity. Moreover, the metaphor of meshworks in synergistic interaction changes not only how we imagine that anthropology’s parts are integrated, it suggests a different philosophical orientation to the study of the physical, communicative, and …

Institutionalized Islam: A Study Of The Union Des Organisations Islamiques De France, Andrus Gareth Ashoo Jan 2008

Institutionalized Islam: A Study Of The Union Des Organisations Islamiques De France, Andrus Gareth Ashoo

Honors Theses

This paper examines the role of Islamic religious authority in France as it pertains to the possibilities and limitations of Muslims becoming French. Such religious authority has emerged in the form of an institutionalized Islam promoted by both the Muslim community and the French government. One of the major federations, the Union des organisations islamiques de France (UOIF), was used as a case study. Primary data was collected from the websites of the UOIF and of affiliated organizations, pamphlets, and newsletters for the Rencontre annuelle des musulmans de France (RAMF). The nature of the data collected centered on the UOIF's …

Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton Jan 2007

Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton

Honors Theses

In this study I examined the reactions of official and independent German language organizations to the influx of Denglish, which is a hybrid mix of German and English, and Anglicisms. The independent language organizations tend to be more open in opposing these linguistic influences, and often want strict language protection laws like those in France and Poland. I hypothesized that Germany’s Nazi past has led to a general lack of patriotism and nationalism in Germany, which has affected their language policy and allowed Germany to be overrun by Denglish and Anglicized words and phrases. Germany is experiencing a renewal of …

Beyond The Binary: Rorty Rushdie, Zachary Mori Bonner Jan 2006

Beyond The Binary: Rorty Rushdie, Zachary Mori Bonner

Honors Theses

Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children is a two-pronged postcolonial critique. Saleem Sinai's metanarrative of emancipation that also overhauls the postcolonial episteme.^ While Rushdie's confrontation of native subjectivity and the epistemic structures that inhibit the native's agency are plainly rooted in the postcolonial conversation, the major theorists in the field do not offer models of opposition that properly house his intervention. The work of Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak is representative of the trajectory of the strategies of discursive opposition to the employed by postcolonial theory. None of these theorists' metaphors for opposition create sufficient distance from the knowledge …
