© 2019 The Authors. Environmental Toxicology published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exposure to environmental contaminants and consumption of a high, saturated fatty diet has been demonstrated to promote precursors for metabolic syndrome (hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hypertriglyceridemia). The purpose of this study was to determine if exposure to the most prevalent environmental persistent organic pollutants (POPs) would act as causative agents to promote metabolic syndrome independent of dietary intake. We hypothesized that POPs will activate the advanced glycated end-product (AGE)-and receptor for AGE (RAGE) signaling cascade to promote downstream signaling modulators of cardiovascular remodeling and oxidative stress in the heart. Copyright © 2019 American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved. We sought to define trends in and predictors of carbapenem consumption across community, teaching, and university-affiliated hospitals in the United States and Canada. We conducted a retrospective multicenter survey of carbapenem and broad-spectrum noncarbapenem beta-lactam consumption between January 2011 and December 2013. Consumption was tabulated as defined daily doses (DDD) or as days of therapy (DOT) per 1,000 patient days (PD). Multivariate mixed-effects models were explored, and final model goodness of fit was assessed by regressions of observed versus predicted values and residual distributions. A total of 20 acute-care hospitals …

B-form DNA can adopt alternative structures under conditions such as superhelical duress. Alternative DNA structures are favored when there is asymmetric distribution of guanosine and cytosine on complimentary DNA strands. A guanosine-rich strand can form a four-stranded structure known as a quadruplex (G4). The complimentary cytosine-rich strand can utilize intercalating cytosine−cytosine base pairing to form a four-stranded structure known as the i-motif (iM). Both secondary structures are energetically uphill from double-strand DNA (dsDNA), meaning that additional factors are needed for their formation. Most iMs require slightly acidic conditions for structure stabilization. However, crowding agents such as polyethylene glycols and dextrans …

Case Studies Of Accounting Concepts And Methodologies, Bruce Senter
Case Studies Of Accounting Concepts And Methodologies, Bruce Senter
Honors Theses
Instead of the traditional honors thesis that is written during a winter internship and communicated to the dean throughout the course of work, the following alternative thesis is composed of twelve individual case studies that were drawn from the course Accountancy 420. The course, led by Dr. Victoria Dickinson, was scheduled in a way that the cases were worked on in conjunction with professional meetings and presentations, in which members of accounting firms or various other businesses would discuss topics relating to the current state of accounting, their specific industry, and how the two intertwine. The case studies all required, …
Nutritional Knowledge And Behaviors Of Undergraduate Students, Victoria Inghram
Nutritional Knowledge And Behaviors Of Undergraduate Students, Victoria Inghram
Honors Theses
Poor dietary behavior can lead to various chronic health conditions, such as heart disease and obesity. Because dietary intake takes time to impact health, observing diet knowledge in college students can be beneficial. This study sought to measure whether greater nutritional knowledge would translate to a healthier dietary intake. Nutritional knowledge and behavior were measured and then compared in 257 students in two different undergraduate classes - an introductory nutrition course and a standard biology course - which was the control group. Each class was given the same survey at the beginning and end of the fall semester. Results indicated …
Analysis Of Septum Defects In Arabidopsis Organ Boundary Mutants, Katherine T. Anderson
Analysis Of Septum Defects In Arabidopsis Organ Boundary Mutants, Katherine T. Anderson
Honors Theses
Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant species, has been heavily studied to determine the genetic contributions that lead to gynoecium development. The Arabidopsis fruit is created from two carpels that form a gynoecium, which contains the stigma, style, and ovary. The ovary is divided into two sub-compartments by a septum, and the ovules develop within the ovary. The fruit’s purpose is to protect, nurture, and eventually disperse the mature ovules, or seeds, and if the septum does not fuse properly, the plant’s fertility will be impacted. SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) and ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA HOMEOBOX GENE1 (ATH1) are two genes that are known …

Auditory Radiation And Cognitive Decline: Probabilistic Tractography Study, Adryanna Tucker
Auditory Radiation And Cognitive Decline: Probabilistic Tractography Study, Adryanna Tucker
Honors Theses
The relationship between hearing loss and Alzheimer’s disease has been studied for many years. Previous studies have shown a negative correlation between the two. In our study, we investigated the relationship between the strength of the auditory radiation connections and the severity of cognitive decline. To do so, we assessed probabilistic tractography using DTI data of the primary auditory pathway. Further, we assessed the level of cognition using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cog to determine the relationship between the auditory connections assessed in each patient and that patient’s level of cognitive decline. We found that FA and AD were positively …

Case Study Of Various Financial And Managerial Accounting Issues, Thomas J. Phillips
Case Study Of Various Financial And Managerial Accounting Issues, Thomas J. Phillips
Honors Theses
This thesis is different from the traditional thesis done for the Honors College. This thesis took place over the course of 2 semesters of classes in Accounting 420. Dr. Vicki Dickinson led this class and helped shape our professional development in the field of accounting. The cases were not the only part of the thesis. Every other week of the class an accounting firm would come visit. They would have a slideshow and guest speaker and discuss accounting related topics that were relevant to the field. Afterwards there was always an opportunity to network with the professionals. There were also …
