On The Move: Sloths And Their Epibionts As Model Mobile Ecosystems, Maya Kaup, Sam Trull, Erik F. Y. Hom Jun 2021

On The Move: Sloths And Their Epibionts As Model Mobile Ecosystems, Maya Kaup, Sam Trull, Erik F. Y. Hom

Faculty and Student Publications

Sloths are unusual mobile ecosystems, containing a high diversity of epibionts living and growing in their fur as they climb slowly through the canopies of tropical forests. These epibionts include poorly studied algae, arthropods, fungi, and bacteria, making sloths likely reservoirs of unexplored biodiversity. This review aims to identify gaps and eliminate misconceptions in our knowledge of sloths and their epibionts, and to identify key questions to stimulate future research into the functions and roles of sloths within a broader ecological and evolutionary context. This review also seeks to position the sloth fur ecosystem as a model for addressing fundamental …

Ethiopian Medicinal Plants Traditionally Used For The Treatment Of Cancer; Part 3: Selective Cytotoxic Activity Of 22 Plants Against Human Cancer Cell Lines, Solomon Tesfaye, Hannah Braun, Kaleab Asres, Ephrem Engidawork

Faculty and Student Publications

Medicinal plants have been traditionally used to treat cancer in Ethiopia. However, very few studies have reported the in vitro anticancer activities of medicinal plants that are collected from different agro‐ecological zones of Ethiopia. Hence, the main aim of this study was to screen the cytotoxic activities of 80% methanol extracts of 22 plants against human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), as well as human breast (MCF‐7), lung (A427), bladder (RT‐4), and cervical (SiSo) cancer cell lines. Active extracts were further screened against human large cell lung carcinoma (LCLC‐103H), pancreatic cancer (DAN‐G), ovarian cancer (A2780), and squamous cell carcinoma of …

We present an analysis of the exclusive B+→π+π-ℓ+νℓ decay, where ℓ represents an electron or a muon, with the assumption of charge-conjugation symmetry and lepton universality. The study exploits the full ϒ(4S) data sample collected by the Belle detector, corresponding to 711 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Events are selected by fully reconstructing one B meson in hadronic decay modes, subsequently determining the properties of the other B meson. We extract the signal yields using a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the missing-mass squared distribution in bins of the invariant mass of the two pions or the momentum transfer squared. We measure …

Using a data sample of 980 fb−1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider, we study the processes of Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0, Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0, and Ξc0→Σ+K∗− for the first time. The relative branching ratios to the normalization mode of Ξc0→Ξ−π+ are measured to beB(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.18±0.02(stat.)±0.01(syst.),B(Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.69±0.03(stat.)±0.03(syst.),B(Ξc0→Σ+K∗−)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.34±0.06(stat.)±0.02(syst.), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We obtainB(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0)=(3.3±0.3(stat.)±0.2(syst.)±1.0(ref.))×10−3,B(Ξc0→Σ0K¯∗0)=(12.4±0.5(stat.)±0.5(syst.)±3.6(ref.))×10−3,B(Ξc0→Σ+K∗0)=(6.1±1.0(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±1.8(ref.))×10−3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+), respectively. The asymmetry parameters α(Ξc0→ΛK¯∗0) and α(Ξc0→Σ+K∗−) are 0.15 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.04(syst.) and −0.52 ± 0.30(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.), respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical followed by systematic. We report the first measurement of the exclusive cross sections e+e− → BB¯ , e+e− → BB¯ ∗, and e+e− → B∗B¯ ∗ in the energy range from 10.63 GeV to 11.02 GeV. The B mesons are fully reconstructed in a large number of hadronic final states and the three channels are identified using a beam-constrained-mass variable. The shapes of the exclusive cross sections show oscillatory behavior with several maxima and minima. The results are obtained using data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Faculty and Student Publications

We report results from a study of the spin and parity of Ξc(2970)+ using a 980 fb-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The decay angle distributions in the chain Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+→Ξc+π-π+ are analyzed to determine the spin of this charmed-strange baryon. The angular distributions strongly favor the Ξc(2970)+ spin J=1/2 over 3/2 or 5/2, under an assumption that the lowest partial wave dominates in the decay. We also measure the ratio of Ξc(2970)+ decay branching fractions R=B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+]/B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc′0π+]=1.67±0.29(stat)-0.09+0.15(syst)±0.25(IS), where the last uncertainty is due to possible isospin-symmetry-breaking effects. This R value favors the spin-parity …

Linear Discriminant Analysis Based On Gas Chromatographic Measurements For Geographical Prediction Of Usa Medical Domestic Cannabis, Ramia Z. Al Bakain, Yahya S. Al-Degs, James V. Cizdziel, Mahmoud A. Elsohly

Faculty and Student Publications

Fifty four domestically produced cannabis samples obtained from different USA states were quantitatively assayed by GC-FID to detect 22 active components: 15 terpenoids and 7 cannabinoids. The profiles of the selected compounds were used as inputs for samples grouping to their geographical origins and for building a geographical prediction model using Linear Discriminant Analysis. The proposed sample extraction and chromatographic separation was satisfactory to select 22 active ingredients with a wide analytical range between 5.0 and 1,000 μg/mL. Analysis of GC-profiles by Principle Component Analysis retained three significant variables for grouping job (Δ9-THC, CBN, and CBC) and the modest discrimination …

Faculty and Student Publications

Using the entire data sample of 980 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, we present an amplitude analysis measuring the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-allowed, W-exchange resonant decay Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-) with a polarized φ and the nonresonant decay via a direct process Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-. We present these measurements, relative to the normalization mode Ξ-π+, and find branching ratios B(Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-))(BΞc0→Ξ-π+)=0.036±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.) and B(Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-)B(Ξc0→Ξ-π+)=0.039±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.), which suggest that only minor cusping peaks occur in the combinatorial background of ω∗-→Ξ0K- due to these Ξc0 decays.

We report measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for Ds+→K+η, Ds+→K+π0, and Ds+→π+η decays, and the branching fraction for Ds+→π+π0. Our results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 921 fb-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. Our measurements of CP asymmetries in these decays are the most precise to date; no evidence for CP violation is found.

The Effect Of Sampling Density And Study Area Size On Landscape Genetics Inferences For The Mississippi Slimy Salamander (Plethodon Mississippi), Stephanie M. Burgess, Ryan C. Garrick Jun 2021

The Effect Of Sampling Density And Study Area Size On Landscape Genetics Inferences For The Mississippi Slimy Salamander (Plethodon Mississippi), Stephanie M. Burgess, Ryan C. Garrick

Faculty and Student Publications

In landscape genetics, it is largely unknown how choices regarding sampling density and study area size impact inferences upon which habitat features impede vs. facilitate gene flow. While it is recommended that sampling locations be spaced no further apart than the average individual's dispersal distance, for low-mobility species, this could lead to a challenging number of sampling locations, or an unrepresentative study area. We assessed the effects of sampling density and study area size on landscape genetic inferences for a dispersal-limited amphibian, Plethodon mississippi, via analysis of nested datasets. Microsatellite-based genetic distances among individuals were divided into three datasets representing …

Generalized Bms Algebra At Timelike Infinity, A. H. Anupam, Aniket Khairnar, Arpan Kundu

Faculty and Student Publications

BMS (Bondi-Metzner-Sachs) group (and its various generalizations) at null infinity has been studied extensively in the literature as the symmetry group of asymptotically flat spacetimes. The intricate relationship between soft theorems and the BMS symmetries has also motivated the definition of such asymptotic symmetries to timelike infinity [M. Campiglia, Null to time-like infinity Green's functions for asymptotic symmetries in Minkowski spacetime, J. High Energy Phys. 11 (2015) 160.]. Although the vector fields that generate the (generalized) BMS algebra at timelike infinity were defined in the literature, the algebra has not been investigated. In this paper. we fill this gap. We …

Multi-Scale, Class-Generic, Privacy-Preserving Video, Zhixiang Zhang, Thomas Cilloni, Charles Walter, Charles Fleming

Faculty and Student Publications

In recent years, high-performance video recording devices have become ubiquitous, posing an unprecedented challenge to preserving personal privacy. As a result, privacy-preserving video systems have been receiving increased attention. In this paper, we present a novel privacy-preserving video algorithm that uses semantic segmentation to identify regions of interest, which are then anonymized with an adaptive blurring algorithm. This algorithm addresses two of the most important shortcomings of existing solutions: it is multi-scale, meaning it can identify and uniformly anonymize objects of different scales in the same image, and it is class-generic, so it can be used to anonymize any class …

Story And Sorority: How Sisters Shape The Novels Of Jane Austen, Morgan Elizabeth Reid May 2021

Story And Sorority: How Sisters Shape The Novels Of Jane Austen, Morgan Elizabeth Reid

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact and use of sisters and sorority in the novels of Jane Austen, answering the question of how they are shaping the narratives of the stories. Focusing in particular on Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, I highlight the ways that Austen’s writing crafts plots that rely upon sisters to function. Austen also uses sister figures to reveal the characteristics of her main protagonists and to express the themes she is most concerned about within each story. I also show Austen’s pattern of affirming the value and importance of …

Chemical And Co-Solute Effects Of Polyethylene Glycol On I-Motif Formation, Lindsey Rutherford May 2021

Chemical And Co-Solute Effects Of Polyethylene Glycol On I-Motif Formation, Lindsey Rutherford

Honors Theses

DNA typically forms Watson and Crick double helix structures in which adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine pair with their complimentary DNA base. However, DNA i-motif structures can form in cytosine rich DNA, typically under slightly acidic conditions (~pH 6). DNA i-motifs are four stranded secondary structures in which cytosine pairs with cytosine to form a quadruplex. The i-motifs are typically formed in acidic conditions because of the protonation in the C•C base pair between one of the three hydrogen bases. Recent studies have suggested i-motifs can also form under neutral conditions, which is more realistic for a cell. It is …

Objectives: The corpus callosum of the brain is an important and complex structure that allows communication between the two cerebral hemispheres. In the absence of knowledge about the relationship between the corpus callosum and the auditory cortices, this study aimed to investigate how the structure changes. Specifically, we explored the age associated changes of interhemispheric connectivity between left and right cortices through the corpus callosum. Methods: Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data from enhanced Nathan Kline Institute- Rockland Sample (NKI-RS), we isolated the auditory corpus callosum, or the section of the corpus callosum that transfers auditory information, in each individual subject …

Covalent Modification Of Genetically Engineered Polymers With Bodipy Fluorophores, Emilie Smith May 2021

Covalent Modification Of Genetically Engineered Polymers With Bodipy Fluorophores, Emilie Smith

Honors Theses

Osteoarthritis and other debilitating diseases cause chronic pain that is difficult to manage. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are the current standard of treatment for many long-term pain management, but there are potential systemic effects when using NSAIDs long-term. Therefore, it isnecessary to have an alternative option for NSAID delivery that doesn’t include these systemic effects. Hydrogels can be that alternative option. Hydrogels’ distinct characteristics allow them to be viable in the body, degrade under unique conditions, and be modified through many different chemistries. Additionally, hydrogels can be engineered and their properties optimized for the use as a drug depot inside …

The Effects Of Disclosure On Perceptions Of Different Overt Stuttering Severity Levels, Katelyn Geringswald May 2021

The Effects Of Disclosure On Perceptions Of Different Overt Stuttering Severity Levels, Katelyn Geringswald

Honors Theses

This study measured perceptions of a 17-year-old adolescent male who stutters, relative to select speech skills and personality characteristics, as a function of self-disclosure at various overt severity levels. 983 participants were assigned one of the four conditions, including (1) a no-disclosure control group, (2) mild stuttering severity self-disclosure, (3) moderate stuttering severity self-disclosure, and (4) severe stuttering severity self-disclosure. Participants assigned to the control condition viewed only a primary video stimulus of a 17-year-old adolescent who stutters. Participants assigned to one of the three experimental conditions (mild, moderate, or severe severity disclosure) watched a brief self-disclosure statement, followed by …
