Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban
Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Concern about eating genetically engineered food is explored for a sample of residents from Florida and North Carolina. Previous research on consumers' food safety concerns and perceived risk associated with food production suggests that concern about genetically engineered food is influenced by three factors. Concern is influenced by how well informed consumers are about food technology, their capacity to understand that information, and the compatibility of genetic engineering with consumers' moral beliefs. Utilizing logistic regression, women and persons who viewed genetic engineering to be morally wrong were found to have greater concern about eating genetically engineered foods. Awareness and educational …

The Cultural Interpretation Of Breast Cancer, Jessica Gregg
The Cultural Interpretation Of Breast Cancer, Jessica Gregg
Southern Anthropologist
By attaching meaning to illness, cultural demystifies seemingly random conditions, while simultaneously entrapping them in inescapable webs of significance. Humans are caught between the need to and give meaning to illness, and the danger of giving illness an interpretation that ultimately proves deleterious to victims of disease, and to society itself. This paper argues that in the developed Western cultures*, breast cancer is an example of an illness "marked with cultural salience" and saturated with cultural meaning. I contend that within the developed Western nations, breast cancer has developed a pervasive, culture-specific meaning, and that as Western culture has created …

The Practical Importance Of National Character Studies, Honggang Yang
The Practical Importance Of National Character Studies, Honggang Yang
Southern Anthropologist
Over a decade after Hsu's recognition of the urgency of national characte r studies, the pressing need is still there, especially in light of the demand for the anthropological application to the author's career. In this essay, the significance of the approach is exemplified, and impediments to its furtherance are revealed. Honggang Yang, a Chinese anthropologist who received his Ph.D. from University of South Florida in 1991, is presently a Research Associate of Conflict Resolution Programs at the Carter Center of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

From Giviaks To Geopolitics: Grabbing Students Who Don't Plan To Major In Anthropology, And Never Will, Burton L. Purrington
Southern Anthropologist
Most students in my introductory classes are having their first and only formal experience with anthropology, and this may be their only opportunity to examine indepth beliefs and lifeways different from their own. Graphic examples of cultural practices quite outside the students' experience are analyzed in part to get their attention and in part to dispel ethnocentric stereotypes by showing that seemingly weird practices make sense in the context of Lheir natural, historical, and sociocultural environments. VigneLtes from the students' own society and contemporary sociopolitical issues are similarly subjected to anthropological analysis to show the relevance of this view of …

For over twenty-five years, anthropologists have been concerned about the teaching of anthropology, especially introductory anthropology. A major concern has been with the resources available to teach introductory courses and another concern has been with teaching methods. This paper describes how both concerns are resolved in a unique way. Students discover, provide, and explain sets of a specific type of "resource," cartoons, and in turn, a departmental museum presents them as an exhibit. In this way, anthropology is introduced to a wider audience and methodology extended beyond the classroom. Students are collaborators in this broader educational venture.
