The Roman Catholic Church's Institutionalized Biases: Syncretic Processes In Tanzania, Julian M. Murchison
The Roman Catholic Church's Institutionalized Biases: Syncretic Processes In Tanzania, Julian M. Murchison
Southern Anthropologist
My ethnographic fieldwork in Tanzania suggests that many Tanzanian Roman Catholics would prefer for the Church to adopt more syncretic practices drawing on autochthonous customs, symbols, and ideas. Thoughts and suggestions from Tanzanians on this topic incorporate a wide variety of possibilities. Nevertheless, the present situation in the Roman Catholic Church in Tanzania seems to diverge significantly from these possibilities. Given this context, my paper will describe and examine the connections between the organizational structure of the Roman Catholic Church and syncretic manifestations in the Church in Tanzania. I will analyze the relation between the locations of decision-making and authority …

NUTRITIONAL INFERENCE FROM FAUNAE REMAINS AT THE PARKIN SITE. Parkin, a late Mississippian site in Arkansas, provides the opportunity, using archaeological evidence, to examine the nutritional status of a population which may have faced demographic collapse after the De Soto expedition of 1539-1543. Paleobotanical research by Williams shows Parkin conforms to generalized notions of maize-based agriculture. Human skeletal assessments by Murray show evidence of possible nutritional stress at Parkin. This study provides interpretive faunal analysis from a house floor excavated at Parkin. Integrating faunal, botanical, and human skeletal evidence provides a profile of nutritional adequacy and diversity. Nutritional stress was …

Dimensions Of Farm Commodity Production: Horses, Strawberries, And Why, Ronald C. Wimberley, Robert M. Moxley
Dimensions Of Farm Commodity Production: Horses, Strawberries, And Why, Ronald C. Wimberley, Robert M. Moxley
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
To better understand the social context of food and fiber production, more and more researchers are beginning to study the production of agricultural commodities as independent, dependent, and intervening variables. Typically, these commodity variables are measured in terms of separate crop or livestock products or by ad hoc indexes that summarize several commodities. To assess and better understand the spectrum of farm commodities examined in such research, this study uses North Carolina data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture to factor analyze various indicators of crop and livestock production and to determine any underlying, empirical dimensions. Explanations of the empirical …

The Sexual Economy Of Women And Hiv In Uganda: A Critical Biocultural Analysis, Ron Barrett
The Sexual Economy Of Women And Hiv In Uganda: A Critical Biocultural Analysis, Ron Barrett
Southern Anthropologist
A lens of biocultural medical anthropology is used to critically examine host-parasite coevolution in the sexual economies of Ugandan women. These women are often informed risk managers concerning sexual exchanges in relation to factors of political economy, women's status, male sexuality, and the epidemiology of the disease. Alternative landscapes of biocultural adaptation demostrate that the longer term benefits of condom use in AIDS prevention can be substantially diminished by the shorter term morbidity associatied with the unfavorabale socioeconomic circumstances of Ugandan women. Unless health interventions are broadened to improve these circumstances, positive feedback between cultural and biological factors will favor …
