Non-Specific Stress Indicators And Growth Efficiency In The Archaic And Mississippian At The Perry Site (1 Lu25) In Northwestern Alabama, Robin Wiebe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Porotic hyperostosis, linear enamel hypoplasias and adult stature are all nonspecific indicators of stress. When studied together, they provide an understanding of the long-term survival of periods of stress occurring in varying stages of the life of an individual. Because the Perry Site contains both Archaic and Mississippian components, it provides a unique opportunity to examine not only how these indicators interact, but also how interactions may change across time and subsistence base. Most studies show increases in frequency of porotic hyperostosis and linear enamel hypoplasias and a decrease in adult stature with a shift to agriculture. The Perry material …

Oil And Natural Gas And Rural Local Government Finances In The Gulf Of Mexico Region, F. Carson Mencken, Nicole Flynn
Oil And Natural Gas And Rural Local Government Finances In The Gulf Of Mexico Region, F. Carson Mencken, Nicole Flynn
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
National energy policy is focused on increasing production and exploration of existing energy sources (particularly oil and natural gas). What impact this might have on local institutions, particularly local governments who are often responsible for providing the infrastructure necessary to sustain production and exploration, is a relatively unexplored but important question. Sociological theory predicts that the effect will be most felt in nonmetropolitan communities that specialize in oil and gas production. We pursue this issue by examining the impact of the oil and gas industry boom and bust period of the 1970s and 1980s on local government finances in oil …
Underemployment And Workforce Development In The Mississippi Delta: Community-Based Action Research For Program Planning To Increase Livelihood Security, John J. Green, Antoinette Jones, Christopher Pope
Underemployment And Workforce Development In The Mississippi Delta: Community-Based Action Research For Program Planning To Increase Livelihood Security, John J. Green, Antoinette Jones, Christopher Pope
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Underemployment and poverty are important social problems, and they have received attention from researchers and policymakers with interest directed toward workforce development programs. Building from the knowledge obtained through regional and national quantitative studies, this project assessed what employers and underemployed adults living in Mississippi Delta communities had to say about these problems and how to address them for the purpose of informing a community-based organization. Following a review of Census data, qualitative telephone interviews and focus groups were utilized in this community-based action research effort aimed at informing workforce development program planning to increase livelihood security. Results from asset …
Chocolate Plantation: A Geophysical And Archaeological Examination Of A Sea Island Cotton Plantation On Sapelo Island, Georgia, Christopher William Simmons
Chocolate Plantation: A Geophysical And Archaeological Examination Of A Sea Island Cotton Plantation On Sapelo Island, Georgia, Christopher William Simmons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chocolate Field, the area containing the ruins of Chocolate Plantation, was occupied from the Late Archaic through the antebellum period into the 20th century. A complex overlay of architectural remains generated during the operation of the plantation by everyone from French nobles to 20th century millionaires is buried at the site. A four- instrument geophysical survey in conjunction with test excavations provides data which make it possible to delineate the extent of the site, determine structure function, and separate the plantation into occupational phases. These results will ultimately serve to help link the Geechee/Gullah community presently living on Sapelo …

Women And Development In Postsocialism: Theory And Power East And West, Sarah D. Phillips
Women And Development In Postsocialism: Theory And Power East And West, Sarah D. Phillips
Southern Anthropologist
To date, ethnographic research in Kyiv, Ukraine since 1998 has analyzed popular, political, and academic engagement of the “civil society” construct in the postsocialist context by examining ten nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) led by women. Further goals of this research have been to outline the challenges facing women in the post-Soviet period, and to examine the long-term effects of the Soviet gender contract. I argue that, in many cases, leadership roles in social organizations are a form of alternative employment for women, who have been forced out of their jobs in the context of postsocialist economic crisis and a revived nationalism …

Contradiction, Cultural Tourism, Development And Social Structure In Nepal, Steven Folmar
Southern Anthropologist
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a testable model of the effects of development-related, cultural tourism on local social structures in Nepal and elsewhere. This essay attempts to sort out some of the more salient, patterned features of social interaction from the messiness of the total social reality in which they exist, or to deal with what Rojek and Urry (1997, 3) have termed Modernity 1, “rules to live by” and Modernity 2, the, “’dis- orderliness’ of life.”
Of Heroines And Victims: Women And Economic Development In Medellín, Colombia, Donna F. Murdock
Of Heroines And Victims: Women And Economic Development In Medellín, Colombia, Donna F. Murdock
Southern Anthropologist
Under circumstances where women are increasingly relied upon for development work, some important questions need answering. Are women victimized or empowered by their participation in development? Through the examination of three case studies from Colombia, I will argue that the shift toward neoliberal development policies creates conditions under which women’s participation in development is both more necessary for survival, and more difficult to maintain. These policies, slashing state budgets for social services, increasing unemployment rates, and exacerbating social conflict, make demands of women that ate perhaps both unreasonable and unfair.

Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck
Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck
Accounting Historians Journal
Recent archaeological evidence supports the claim that the first system of writing and the first use of abstract numerical representation evolved from the clay token accounting system of ancient Mesopotamia. Writing and other abstract symbol systems have subsequently transformed human cognitive capacities within only few millennia, a time period too short for any substantial changes in our biologically-evolved brains. This paper uses Merlin Donald's theory of human cognitive and cultural evolution [in Origins of the Modern Mind; 1991] to identify the role played by ancient accounting in these evolutionary processes. Specifically, it is argued that this early accounting system paved …
Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan
Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan
Accounting Historians Journal
Few disciplines are probably more different than music and accounting. Nonetheless possible suggestions about historiography in accounting and management can be drawn from an innovative textbook on the history of music [Favaro and Pestalozza, 1999]. This is a rather unusual music history textbook. It has several distinguishing features which raise issues about: histories of the present, history and theory making, a non-linear sense of history, a social history of music, a pluralist view of genres, and a multi-geographical emphasis. These features have interesting parallels with accounting history and historiography.

The Daughter’S Struggle For Definition Both With And Against The Mother In Achieving Selfhood In Five Contemporary American Novels, Camille Leigh Comer
The Daughter’S Struggle For Definition Both With And Against The Mother In Achieving Selfhood In Five Contemporary American Novels, Camille Leigh Comer
Honors Theses
The following thesis analyzes the mother-daughter relationships in Rebecca Wells’ Little Altars Everywhere and Divine Secrets of the Ya~Ya Sisterhood, Janet Fitch’s White Oleander and Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees. Attempting to illustrate the central significance of relations between mothers and daughters in everyday life, I chose the four novels based on their recent popularity in mainstream society. For instance, both Divine Secrets and White Oleander have been made into films within the past few years. In gathering data for my thesis, I focused on information explaining why the relationships between mothers and daughters are especially potent …
New Opportunities For Social Research On Forest Landowners In The South, John Schelhas, Robert Zabawa, Joseph J. Molnar
New Opportunities For Social Research On Forest Landowners In The South, John Schelhas, Robert Zabawa, Joseph J. Molnar
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Many of the issues of importance to forest management and policy have important social components. Yet, in the South, social research on forests has lagged behind economic and biophysical research. In this paper we identify some important new opportunities for social research on forests in the South, focusing on non industrial private forests because they represent the majority of the South's timberland. We identify six important areas for social research. One, research on diversity of forest land owners and how different landowners relate to and use their forests. Two, social relationships of forest landowners, including household and family structure and …
