Thank you so much to the many who have given so far to the Charles Reagan Wilson Graduate Student Support Fund. To date we've raised $18,094 from 129 donors. The campaign, which concludes on May 11, is beginning to wind down. Please consider a gift to honor a great professor, and please share the fund with friends. We have $6,906 to go, and with your help, we can get there.
Appalachia, Usa: An Empirical Note And Agenda For Future Research, Russell Weaver
Appalachia, Usa: An Empirical Note And Agenda For Future Research, Russell Weaver
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Drawing regional bright-lines to separate one “kind” of space from another is often complex and nebulous, if not impossible, in social science research. These circumstances generate two countervailing tendencies: they (1) promote multiple conceptualizations of a given ideational region; and (2) increase demand for a standardized operational definition of that region with which to facilitate intertemporal and interdisciplinary empirical research. These two tendencies animate much of the discourse on “Appalachian” geographies in America. While comparatively theoretically-oriented work emphasizes the unbounded, socially constructed nature of Appalachia, empirical research must often represent the region as a bounded spatial unit. The operational definition …

In 1973 the Memphis State Tigers reached the finals of the NCAA basketball tournament. Though they lost to UCLA, they inspired a civic myth. With each victory, the city's enthusiasm ballooned, with paeans to stars Larry Finch, Ronnie Robinson, and Larry Kenon, as well as coach Gene Bartow. Politicians upheld the team as a vehicle of interracial unity, supposedly healing the scars from Martin Luther King's assassination in 1968. This myth has elements of truth, as basketball provided common ground across lines of race and class. Yet it hides as much as it reveals. Success in basketball smoothed over Memphians' …

(by Kelley Norris) Scott Barretta, writer and researcher for the Mississippi Blues Trail and an adjunct instructor in sociology and anthropology at the University of Mississippi, has lived in the state for sixteen years, but his blues journey began long before his arrival here. A multidecade musical odysÂsey has led Barretta to receiving the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) 2016 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts for Mississippi Heritage. The award will be presented at the 28th Governor's Awards ceremony, set for 6:00 p.m., February 11, in Jackson.

The South's antiquity is here whether we want it or not. Our predicament is to decide whether or not we want to allow it to be here. To leave this past unseen and unstated is to accept the kind of amputated humanity we have been dealt by what we imagine to be a noble, if fraught, past. In reality, that past is just a story of theft. Legitimacy can't be found nor can it be contrived. It can only be earned. We need to understand that what happened at Jamestown, and Stono, and Cowpens, and Appomattox, and Selma are in …

Telling About The South: An Autobiography Of Antiquity, James Carson
Study the South
The South’s antiquity is a story of theft. Legitimacy can’t be found nor can it be contrived. It can only be earned, by understanding that what happened at Jamestown, Stono, Cowpens, Appomattox, and Selma are in some ways just so many quick breaths taken in a very long life. Only when we try to understand how our usurpations have grafted our lives onto much more ancient rootstock can we begin to resituate how we live and how we think about how we live.

Fluorine Dating Of Human Bone At The Pre-Columbian Maya Cemetery Of Caves Branch Rockshelter, Belize, Morgan Isaacs
Fluorine Dating Of Human Bone At The Pre-Columbian Maya Cemetery Of Caves Branch Rockshelter, Belize, Morgan Isaacs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tests the ion-selective electrode fluorine dating method on the remains from the Maya mortuary site Caves Branch Rockshelter (CBR) in Belize. CBR is a cemetery containing at least 400 burials from the late Preclassic to the Postclassic periods. The intensive use and reuse of the site has disturbed the burial matrices, making it difficult to seriate the burials. Fluorine dating analyzes the amount of fluorine that has accumulated in bone over time. In principle, an older burial will contain more fluorine from groundwater than a more recently buried bone; however, this principle must be tested at each site …

I Live Peacefully In A Video Game World- Collected Poems, James Ardis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I Live Peacefully in a Video Game World occupies impersonal or passive forums such as comments sections, strategy guides, and video game patch notes in order to investigate the intimacy found within them. While conceptual poets have long explored hyper-contemporary communication ranging from spam emails to online reviews for Hollywood movies, these conceptual poets have often allothemselves to be constrained by their devotion to faithfully transcribing documents. The sections of this manuscript, then, are creative reimaginings of Youtube comments sections, strategy guides, and video game patch notes instead of precise transcriptions. This mixture of conceptual poetry and Prufrokian neurosis allow …
