Mercy Buckets: Country Music, Southern Fiction, And The Limits Of Rewriting The South, Andy Oler
Mercy Buckets: Country Music, Southern Fiction, And The Limits Of Rewriting The South, Andy Oler
Study the South
"During World War II, GIs began saying “mercy buckets” as an intentional, joking mispronunciation of the French “merci beaucoup.”1 In the 2011 song “Mercy Buckets,” the southern rock and alt-country band Drive-By Truckers rewrite the phrase’s origin by treating it as an idiom of the American South. As might be expected, however, DBT do not reinforce stereotypical notions of the ignorant southern redneck. Instead, songwriter and lead singer Patterson Hood takes the phrase seriously, explaining just what it would mean if bringing someone “buckets of mercy” were a recognized part of southern culture. . . . In this article, I …
Casting Your Own Spell: The Role Of Individualism In Wiccan Beliefs, Matt Mcdermott
Casting Your Own Spell: The Role Of Individualism In Wiccan Beliefs, Matt Mcdermott
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
What is the role of individualism within the neopagan religious movement of Wicca? To answer this question, this research study was carried out in western North Carolina using participant observation and interviews with ten practitioners in 2021. This paper argues that Wiccan adherents cultivate an individualist agency that manifests through an openness to beliefs and practices. One of Wicca’s key characteristics is a lack of commitment to dogma. This allows Wiccans to bring aspects of their own identities and personalities into their practices. This individualist agency is shaped by solitary and collectivist forms of Wicca, which place value on liberating, …

Representing Rebels: The Semiotics Of Neo-Confederate Heritage In Transnational Digital Spaces, Maximilian Conrad
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
This study examines the discursive profiles of two websites — the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Fraternity of American Descendants — in order to understand the transnational dimensions of neo-Confederate digital spaces. The Fraternity of American Descendants is a nonprofit organization that since 1954 has been based in the town of Santa Bárbara d’Oeste in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The organization works to maintain the historic patrimony of immigration associated with Confederados, American Southerners who fled the United States after the defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. In the United States, the Sons of …

The Competing Narratives Of Tellico: The Tva, Multivocality, And Contested Place-Making In The Little Tennessee River Valley, Cheyenne Bennett
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
In 1979, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) closed the gates on the Tellico Dam and transformed the last thirty-three free flowing miles of the Little Tennessee River into the Tellico Reservoir. The dam led to the physical, spiritual, and affective displacement of various groups of people who all shared a collective attachment to the land and the river. These individuals witnessed the landscape transform from an agrarian space to an area that is now populated and managed by middle-class and upper-middle-class lakefront communities. This paper attempts to understand the post-Tellico Dam landscape by examining how the different groups of displaced …

Predictors Of Future Physician Practice Location, Allegra Latimer
Honors Theses
Healthcare disparities exist throughout the United States. While Mississippi does not stand alone in the maldistribution of physicians and medical practices across the state, it does exist as a state that has been historically medically underserved. According to data collected by The County Health Rankings Model developed by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, in 2019, the ratio of population to primary care physicians in Mississippi was 1860:1. This is nearly 30% higher in disparity than the national average. It is also important to note that of Mississippi’s 82 counties, 79.3% are considered rural with the majority of physicians …

Reframing Culture: The Decolonization And Repatriation Process In The Italian Museum System, Leila De Gruy
Reframing Culture: The Decolonization And Repatriation Process In The Italian Museum System, Leila De Gruy
Honors Theses
In 2022, the collections of the former Museo Coloniale, Colonial Museum, were reopened to the public as a part of the Museo delle Civiltà in Rome. This reopening, viewed by many as an exhumation of fascist dictator Mussolini’s former collection, in the neighborhood he built for the World Fair, reinvigorated the debate surrounding museum decolonization and brought Italy into the spotlight for this topic. This thesis seeks to explore the conversation surrounding the topic of Italian museum decolonization, using the Museo Coloniale’s collection as the primary example of a colonial museum in a post colonial world. Through this, it asks …
Our Mothers Are Dying: How Economics Affect Maternal Mortality, Kendall Wheelock
Our Mothers Are Dying: How Economics Affect Maternal Mortality, Kendall Wheelock
Honors Theses
One of the primary goals from the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals is to reduce maternal mortality on a global scale. It is well documented that economic success has a strong correlation with maternal mortality (Kirigia et al 2014, 1-3). There is ample research on how one’s health affects their ability to participate in society, furthermore protecting women within the sphere of medicine is a key part of advancing society. This thesis aims to give qualitative and quantitive backing to a deeper investigation of the correlation between economic success and maternal health.
To focus this research, the thesis focuses on …
The Existence Of Stuttering-Like Disfluencies In American Sign Language, Katherine King
The Existence Of Stuttering-Like Disfluencies In American Sign Language, Katherine King
Honors Theses
For over a century, data have documented fluency disorders and stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) in multiple expressive modalities outside of speech, including musical expression, writing, and American Sign Language (ASL). The presence of SLDs in multiple expressive modalities presents the argument that SLDs are not limited to speech. This study specifically surveys fluent ASL signers relative to SLDs, analyzes SLD manifestations, and documents specific examples of stuttering behaviors in ASL.
This study analyzes SLD manifestations in ASL by conducting a survey developed from all known research within the SLD paradigm. Based on all previous research, SLD manifestations are categorized and represented …

Language Laws And Regional Identity: A Case Study Of Euskera In The Basque Country, Jenna Ebel
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the interconnectivity between language laws and regional identity, focusing on education, public health, and transnational systems. Through this case study of the Basque Country, the context and wording of the language laws in the subregions within the Basque Country are utilized to understand how they affect the usage and understanding of the Basque language, “Euskera.” Through this, the study is then focused on the Spanish autonomous community of the Basque Country to understand the effects of a minority language on educational systems, the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the connections to both the EU and the UN. Through a …

Los Pedrenses: Alternative Tourism, The Spectacle Of Youth, And Struggles For Local Authority In La Pedrera, Uruguay, Gwendelyn Gardner
Honors Theses
Tourism has been a longstanding industry in La Pedrera, a rural beach town along the Atlantic coast of Rocha, Uruguay. The effects of recent forms of tourism massification in the form of los boliches and Carnaval have prompted residents to develop a local discourse and sociopolitical front against youth and mass tourism. This discourse has roots in the strong connection between residents and the environment that has shaped the development of the community as caretakers of the region. Such reasoning is based on interviews with La Pedrera locals, social media analysis, and articles for local and national newspapers in conjunction …

A Realistic Path Towards A More Affordable Healthcare System For The United States, James Loome
A Realistic Path Towards A More Affordable Healthcare System For The United States, James Loome
Honors Theses
This study was performed in order to try to discover ways in which the American healthcare system can improve and become more affordable for its citizens. The main focus was to see how implementing a universal healthcare system could benefit the United States. I analyzed aspects of many different universal healthcare system structures and chose aspects that I think should or should not be included in a revised version of the US healthcare system. There was a strong focus on the aspects of Japan and Costa Rica’s healthcare systems. I also pointed out weaknesses in the US healthcare system that …

A Comparison Of Regional Food Systems And Food Security In Rural Mississippi And Italy, Reinhard Matthew Knerr
A Comparison Of Regional Food Systems And Food Security In Rural Mississippi And Italy, Reinhard Matthew Knerr
Honors Theses
Food insecurity has strong links to worsened overall health outcomes, specifically, increased prevalence of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. Food insecurity in developed nations is primarily characterized by reduced access to nutritionally dense foods. This problem is especially prevalent in the Mississippi (MS) Delta region, where greater than two in five people are food insecure and community health outcomes are among the worst in the nation. Recent literature has placed emphasis on solutions to urban food insecurity, but urban resolutions cannot be fully extrapolated to rural food systems, where insecurity is characterized by a multifactorial lack …

The Past Close Behind Us: A Comparison Of Anti-Integrationists’ Rhetoric From The 1960’S With Anti-Critical Race Theory Rhetoric Today, Te'keyra Shelton
Honors Theses
The purpose of this research study is to analyze whether there are similarities and differences between how conservative organizations and leaders against integration in the 1960’s and Critical Race Theory today discussed and reacted to these advances for civil rights. While there are drastic differences in the context of both eras, arguments used to justify segregation are still used to justify banning Critical Race Theory. Through research on social movements, rhetorical framing, and white racial and conservative ideology, I was able to understand how these movements are structured to best gain success. And, through a comparative, content analysis of rhetorical …

Unesco World Heritage: Striving For Utopia Through Universal Value, Caleb Phillips
Honors Theses
With this thesis, I take a critical look at the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and its mission to foster international unity through the creation of World Heritage Sites. The World Heritage Convention was created with good intentions, but in attempting to actualize its original objectives, the Convention has strayed from its goals. By looking at the events leading up to the creation of the World Heritage Convention, the Convention itself, and the various measures carried out by the Convention since its creation, it is clear that the UNESCO World Heritage Convention still has work to do to achieve its utopian …
