Testing The Social Processing Advantage In Recognition And Reconstruction Tasks, Stephan Adair Jul 2010

Testing The Social Processing Advantage In Recognition And Reconstruction Tasks, Stephan Adair

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A recent study found that participants were more likely to recall words that were processed socially than when processed in other ways (Reysen & Adair, 2008). Using a similar methodology, the goal was to extend those observations. Specifically, two experiments examined the effect of social processing on participants’ ability to both recognize and reconstruct the order of list items. Participants were asked to remember a list of words with help either from a computer or, purportedly, another participant. It was hypothesized participants would be more likely to recognize list items and better at reconstructing the order of list items, if …

The Merciful Executioner: Spectacles Of Sexual Danger And National Reunification In The George Stinney Case, 1944, Annette Louise Bickford

Southern Anthropologist

The literal and metaphoric defining of postbellum America drew on a politics of exclusion, giving wider force to struggles over national identity and citizenship encoded by race, and inflected by sexual discourses. Despite emancipation claims, men of African descent were increasingly excluded from a citizenship based on notions of “whiteness,” and this was reflected in the shift from the spectacle of vigilante lynching to the spectacular trial. I use the case of George Stinney to illustrate how juridical law, like extra-legal lynching, affirmed a national identity articulated through the legitimation and restoration of white rule, perceived to be under threat. …

Reunions, John Neff Jun 2010

Reunions, John Neff

Research Files of Dr. John Neff

Almost immediately after the end of the Civil War, veterans sought out occasions to gather together, to relive their shared experiences, find solace in their battle-forged bonds, to celebrate their heroic deeds, and commemorate the sacrifices of their fallen comrades. These reunions of regiments, corps, armies, and fraternal organizations – so important to the soldiers and their families – came eventually to serve as symbol of a wider national reunification, despite the vast majority of reunions remaining purely separate former Union or Confederate affairs. By contrast, at infrequent “Blue and Gray” reunions, veterans of both sides made conciliatory overtures, enjoyed …

Applying Craft For Sociological Practice: Place In Odyssey, George K. Floro Apr 2010

Applying Craft For Sociological Practice: Place In Odyssey, George K. Floro

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this presentation it is assumed that craft for sociological practice, an applied side of the discipline, could be expanded if sociologists knew how to do the craft or, if they already know, want to engage in the practice. Its potential is illustrated in one sector. The selection, when associated with decisions or action, comes out of public participation in collective life, often in the framework of an entire society or some action center in it. The name often associated with it is Sociological Imagination. An associated task is to identify “contradictions” and to explore ways to resolve them as …
