In-Situ, High-Throughput Dna Sequencing And Methodology Refinement To Survey Biodiversity And Identify Candidate New Species To Science In A Largely Unprotected Biological Corridor In Ecuador, Christian Boudreaux
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
The world is undergoing a biodiversity crisis in which hundreds of species have gone extinct within the last few centuries, rivaling previous mass extinction events that have only occurred five times in the history of the planet. Anthropogenic stressors such as the climate crisis, over exploitation of natural resources, deforestation, and pollution have created and fostered a mass extinction event that is taking place in every corner of the planet. Endemic species, those that are hyper-specialized to specific environmental conditions are most at risk of going extinct. Endemism, therefore, is used as a tool for conservation and as an indicator …

Link’S Sword Is Mightier Than The Pen: Composing And Performing In The Super Mario And Legend Of Zelda Series, William Nelson
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Player interaction has largely defined video games and their concomitant music. Since Pong (1972), players have exercised agency over both in-game events and, by extension, the sounds that accompany them. In this paper, I explore ways in which the “authorial agency” of the player is reflected musically in Nintendo’s Super Mario (1985–) and The Legend of Zelda (1986–) series. Through earcons and other interactive audio, players are able to influence the musical architecture of video games. I begin by considering the indeterminacy of video games as a medium and their consequently indeterminate musical elements. I then examine earcons and the …

Understanding The Ada And Its Impact On Teaching, Liz Norell
Understanding The Ada And Its Impact On Teaching, Liz Norell
Events
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that students have equitable access to class materials, facilities, and learning. The office of Student Disability Services (SDS) coordinates student requests for formal accommodations. This session is designed to help equip instructors with basic knowledge of the ADA’s requirements, with particular focus on how those requirements impact what teachers should (and should not) do in their classrooms and with students. For example, if a student discloses a disability to you but does not have formal accommodations through SDS, what (if any) responsibilities do you have under the law? Learn how your actions, interactions …

Can Vice Make Us Virtuous? The Effects Of Greed Reminders On Charitability, Hayley Pitts
Can Vice Make Us Virtuous? The Effects Of Greed Reminders On Charitability, Hayley Pitts
Honors Theses
Historically, society wishes to encourage people to be good – but also warns against being bad. There is little comparison between the two of which works: the threat of damnation through vice, or the promise of salvation through virtue. This study examines how each of these affect donation behavior. There are two studies within the present research, each with 149 participants randomly assigned into three categories: control, vice, and virtue. Participants were distracted then asked to view an image based on their randomly assigned category, followed by a donation question: would participants donate a $1.00 bonus to a local charity, …

As Bonecas Babadeiras: Drag Subculture And Global Media In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Logan Baggett
Honors Theses
21st century global queer culture is seeing a major boom. Drag queens are the most indicative symbols of this boom, traditional practitioners of gender-bending performances that blend music, dance, makeup, and fashion to create breathtaking performances. To this end, this thesis asks the following question: How is local drag performance culture generated in Rio de Janeiro in the context of this 21st century gay boom? In this global metropolis, drag queens confront challenges––racism, classism, sprawling urban geography, and scene competition––that color their interpersonal relationships and financial success. They also find community, creating family units in the absence of heteronormative power …
