Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard Oct 2014

Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard

Southern Anthropologist

This essay applies theory and method developed over the past two decades by a number of cognitively- and psychologically-oriented social scientists to explore antipathy between Czechs and Roma in the present-day Czech Republic. It investigates how Czech understandings of personhood and otherness are variously organized, acquired, and practiced. Although ethnic hatred continues to be a problem in the Czech Republic, recent findings in psychological anthropology advise against assuming that it is reproduced wholesale from one generation to the next—nor even one instant to the next. The main source of data is the narratives of twenty-five young Czechs, who recall their …

Presidential Address: Reimagining The Future Of Agriculture: Building Knowledge For Sustainability And Resilience, Keiko Tanaka

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The theme of the 2014 SRSA meeting called attention to the interrelationships between agricultural sustainability and community resilience, which have become interrelated goals in building agriculture and communities that support vibrant local food economies in a rapidly globalizing food economy. In this presidential address, I will start with a story of my aunt, who was a farm wife/woman in Tanba Sasayama, Japan. Then, I will return to William H. Friedland’s critique of rural sociology/rural sociologists from 32 years ago to reflect on the impact of an increased importance of these two concepts on transforming the institutional landscape of agricultural sciences. …

"I Wanna Have My Own Damn Dairy Farm!”: Women Farmers, Legibility, And Femininities In Rural Wisconsin, U.S., Julie C. Keller Jul 2014

"I Wanna Have My Own Damn Dairy Farm!”: Women Farmers, Legibility, And Femininities In Rural Wisconsin, U.S., Julie C. Keller

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The number of women farming in the United States continues to climb, even as the number of farms has been relatively stable in recent years. Nevertheless, women often face an uphill battle in asserting themselves as farmers, particularly if they are living and working in communities in which masculinities and femininities have been shaped over time by the gendered symbolic categories of farmer and farm wife. In light of the discursive power of the title of farmer this article examines women’s pathways into farming to ask: 1) To what extent do women encounter difficulties in being legible as farmers, and …

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach Jul 2014

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach

Study the South

Beginning in the late 1960s, an increasing number of black food reformers rejected, or at least complicated, what they regarded as standard American food practices. They asserted a separate black national identity and a competing value system. Culinary black nationalists did not conceive of food decisions as a series of trivial personal consumer choices but rather as an arena for communal activism. The construction of black nationalist foodways was both an evolutionary process and a dialectical one. Radical food reformers analyzed white-owned eating establishments and dominant American foodways in opposition to southern, regional cuisine and in contrast to a vegetarian-inclined …

Intrinsic Motivation And Authentic Engagement: A Conceptual Discussion, Steven J. Bourgeois Apr 2014

Intrinsic Motivation And Authentic Engagement: A Conceptual Discussion, Steven J. Bourgeois

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

This conceptual discussion problematizes the present view of student engagement and motivation, as exemplified in the current culture of assessment and extrinsic orientation toward learning. Nietzsche’s metaphor of the Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit serves as a philosophical frame through which I trace the origins of the psychological concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Taking an historical approach within the field of cognitive psychology, I present the foundational research upon which self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) was built. Through this lens, I consider the implications of current educational practice, with emphasis upon high-stakes assessment and the potential for autonomy-supportive …
