High-throughput DNA sequencing allows efficient discovery of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in nonmodel species. Population genetic theory predicts that this large number of independent markers should provide detailed insights into population structure, even when only a few individuals are sampled. Still, sampling design can have a strong impact on such inferences. Here, we use simulations and empirical SNP data to investigate the impacts of sampling design on estimating genetic differentiation among populations that represent three species of Galápagos giant tortoises (

Economic Identity, Price And Policy: Willingness To Pay For Fracking Regulation In Colorado, Adam Mayer
Economic Identity, Price And Policy: Willingness To Pay For Fracking Regulation In Colorado, Adam Mayer
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This article considers public support for increased regulation of unconventional oil and gas development in Colorado. We examine the role of community economic identity and investigate the possibility of “colliding treadmills” in local political economies as drivers of policy preferences. We find that many place-based variables do little to predict regulatory support, but the cost associated with regulation (increased taxes) and political identity are especially important. Further, this study is one of a handful of sociological analyses to employ the contingent valuation method for environmental valuation, and in doing so it provides a first step toward establishing an empirically rigorous …

Utilization Of Agricultural Information And Knowledge For Improved Production By Rice Farmers In Ondo State, Nigeria, O. D. Adetimehim, J. O. Okunlola, K. E. Owolabi
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The main objective of this study was to examine the utilization of agricultural knowledge and information by rice farmers in Ondo State, Nigeria. Multistage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 80 respondents. Primary data was collected with the aid of a well-structured interview schedule. The data collected was analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study revealed that rice farmers in the study area have a variety of information needs including information on pests and diseases management practices, mechanical land preparation and planting, use of farm machines, improved storage methods, and …

In this study, 2,3-dihydro-1H-indolizinium alkaloid-prosopilosidine (PPD), that was isolated from Prosopis glandulosa, was evaluated against C. neoformans in a murine model of cryptococcosis. In vitro and in vivo toxicity of indolizidines were also evaluated. Mice were infected via the tail vein with live C. neoformans. Twenty-four hours post-infection, the mice were treated with PPD once a day (i.p.) or twice a day (bid) orally, or with amphotericin B (Amp B) intraperitoneally (IP), or with fluconazole (Flu) orally for 5 days. The brains of all of the animals were aseptically removed and the numbers of live C. neoformans were recovered. In …

The oceans harbor a great diversity of organisms, and have been recognized as an important source of new compounds with nutritional and therapeutic potential. Among these compounds, carbohydrate-based compounds are of particular interest because they exhibit numerous biological functions associated with their chemical diversity. This gives rise to new substances for the development of bioactive products. Many are the known applications of substances with glycosidic domains obtained from marine species. This review covers the structural properties and the current findings on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antitumor and antimicrobial activities of medium and high molecular-weight carbohydrates or glycosylated compounds extracted from …

Experimental Effects Of Acute Exercise On Iconic Memory, Short-Term Episodic, And Long-Term Episodic Memory, Danielle Yanes, Paul D. Loprinzi
Experimental Effects Of Acute Exercise On Iconic Memory, Short-Term Episodic, And Long-Term Episodic Memory, Danielle Yanes, Paul D. Loprinzi
Faculty and Student Publications (Open Access)
The present experiment evaluated the effects of acute exercise on iconic memory and short- and long-term episodic memory. A two-arm, parallel-group randomized experiment was employed (n = 20 per group; Mage = 21 year). The experimental group engaged in an acute bout of moderate-intensity treadmill exercise for 15 min, while the control group engaged in a seated, time-matched computer task. Afterwards, the participants engaged in a paragraph-level episodic memory task (20 min delay and 24 h delay recall) as well as an iconic memory task, which involved 10 trials (at various speeds from 100 ms to 800 ms) of recalling …
The Role Of Sex In Memory Function: Considerations And Recommendations In The Context Of Exercise, Paul Loprinzi, Emily Frith
The Role Of Sex In Memory Function: Considerations And Recommendations In The Context Of Exercise, Paul Loprinzi, Emily Frith
Faculty and Student Publications (Open Access)
There is evidence to suggest that biological sex plays a critical role in memory function, with sex differentially influencing memory type. In this review, we detail the current evidence evaluating sex-specific effects on various memory types. We also discuss potential mechanisms that explain these sex-specific effects, which include sex differences in neuroanatomy, neurochemical differences, biological differences, and cognitive and affect-related differences. Central to this review, we also highlight that, despite the established sex differences in memory, there is little work directly comparing whether males and females have a differential exercise-induced effect on memory function. As discussed herein, such a differential …
